Keir Starmer "not naming my children"

Misthios · 08/09/2024 09:35

Respect his stance not to allow pictures of his kids, fair enough, that is the decision he and his wife have made.

But the whole "i'm not publicly naming them" - you'd think as a former lawyer he'd know birth records are public record and anyone can find out in 30 seconds? So not the big secret he thinks it is?

OP posts:

I find it really weird you're questioning this OP. Why does it bother you?

BIossomtoes · 08/09/2024 13:53

Do we usually know politicians’ children’s names? We saw Jeremy Hunt’s three when they moved out of Downing Street but I’m pretty sure they’ve never been named. I don’t think Sunak’s have either.

TooBigForMyBoots · 08/09/2024 14:04

I think his decision not to name his children is sensible, commonsense. Good qualities for a prime minister IMO.

Same, it's been that long since we've had a common sense, so called "boring" PM, people seem to have forgotten what common sense looks like 😁

@Spirallingdownwards

"The same way any parent does. They choose a school based on whether it is the right place for their child."

Except if you can't afford for your child to go to private school then you don't get the option to chose necessarily the "right place."

Even as a state school parent I chose options that were the right fit for my child. If you can afford private yes you have additional choices. But I can't get upset that some people may have more choices even if they are Labour MPs.

What good things Are they doing?

mumda · Today 09:58
If that's what he wants to talk about that's his concern.
But why's he not talking about the good things his government is doing?

I see that no one can answer this question.

BorisJohnsonsPhysique · 08/09/2024 14:30

It’s a bit irrelevant to this thread though. I’m sure a separate thread on that would get plenty of replies, positive and negative.

It’s also a thread on one line from a longer interview he gave. I mean, I haven’t seen it myself, but I’d be quite surprised if most of that interview wasn’t about what he’s doing for his actual job.

JeremiahBullfrog · 08/09/2024 14:32

I've requested a copy of a birth certificate before, you have to put in as much information as you have to hand already. Would they really give you one based on parents' names alone? (Particularly as this does not, in this and many other cases, identify a unique record.)

My friend’s kids are at the school his children are at. They are not rich. A friend of mine used to teach there. They have a very varied intake of kids. It’s got a good reputation, sure, but it’s not serving some rich enclave.

Are you sure his children attend the same secondary school? His daughter has better selection of schools - I would have chosen one of the two highly regarded girls' comprehensive schools within striking distance or the super-selective grammar in the next borough.

Clavinova · 08/09/2024 14:35

a better selection

Sunak's daughters have been named in multiple publications.

PrettyFlyforaMaiTai · 08/09/2024 14:38

The only prime minister’s children’s names I know are the ones who were born when their fathers were in office. So Florence, Wilfred and Romy. I also remember that Florence’s middle name is Endellion as it was influenced by them being on holiday in Cornwall when she was born (which I thought was lovely).

We don’t need to know their names and I’m not interested what teenagers get up to. As long as they are not interfering or influencing policies or unfairly profiting due to their parents’ status, it’s really none of our business.

PandoraSox · 08/09/2024 14:38

This thread proves Starmer is doing the right thing for his kids in trying to protect them from transphobes and ghouls.

Sunak has been happy to refer to his daughters in his campaigning (although not named them). For example:

That's a joke right? Coming down heavy so far the riots stoped quickly just for a start. Ditching one word Ofsted judgements. Negotiating ends to strikes.

No OP, not everyone is interested in the babies either. It's a certain segment of women who are. I'm not. I don't know of any men who actively wanted to know either?

And yet Starmer talked about his son's baby sick in an early Guardian interview.

myrtleWilson
Why on earth [does pp] want to know what two secondary aged children are up to??

Indeed - I thought it was very odd of Starmer to mention recently that his daughter had joined a cheerleading group.

What was your point then?

DuncinToffee · 08/09/2024 15:09

He comes across as a devoted dad.

Good for him to not name them or use them in videos

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 08/09/2024 15:10

And yet Starmer talked about his son's baby sick in an early Guardian interview.

I would as well if I were a politician, wanting to play nice with my electorate. Baby sick? Babies do that. All of them. Not very personal, is it? What does that nugget of information actually tell you?

I'm staggered but not really surprised that so many posters can't see that statement for what it is:
"My family is private and you will not be getting any information about them from me".

Words and ethos to live by really. Some people ridiculously overshare and then wonder why their personal business is no longer their own.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 08/09/2024 15:13

I can still remember the name of at least one of the Blair kids, there were quite a lot of stories in the press about them, back in the day.

The Starmer kids are none of our business, good for him.

As long as they are not interfering or influencing policies or unfairly profiting due to their parents’ status, it’s really none of our business.

Where do you draw the line here though? Starmer was gifted four hospitality tickets to a Taylor Swift concert worth £1,000 each. I would be surprised if he didn't take his children or his daughter at least.

Well, that’s logged in the Register of Interests, so we know about it. Taking your teenage kids along on an outing like that feels pretty above board rather than, say, using them to invite someone for political influence. We know he took his wife as he stuck it on social media.

Gifts given directly to his children would be dodgier, and by not naming them or giving them any sort of profile, he minimises the chances of that happening.

He was DPP actually - he named his wife and son in the same anecdote so very personal.
