Songs you didn't realise were covers

I almost grew up with Natalie Imbruglia's Torn. I used to put the music video channels on TV in the early morning before my parents got up. I loved it, she was one of my first crushes. I watched the video of it over and over again and was bemused how the man was so normal when she was so incredible.

It wasn't until much later I found out that the song was a cover, and the original by Ednaswap was almost identical so it wasn't even an interesting cover!

I would go back and read some of the previous posts before getting excited - the song was offered to other artists, including Bucks Fizz, who recorded their version before Tina Turner, but hers was the one that got released. Bucks Fizz didn't release theirs until the year 2000.

@KlaraSundown this may help.

Rod Stewart, The first cut is the deepest (originally by Cat Stephens)

No - written by Cat Stevens, but first released by P.P. Arnold. I feel her version is absolutely the best.

Karl Wallinger, World Party, wrote it and sang it originally. He died early this year I think.

He wrote some absolutely cracking songs.

This has blown my mind

I can't believe I didn't know Make You Feel My Love by Adele was a cover of a Bob Dylan song until very recently!

Evergreen by Will Young was originally recorded by Westlife

Well I never knew that. Was the Westlife original not played so widely at the time?

World Party, nothing to do with Guy Chambers.

Willy was after Elvis. Neither wrote it.

Wiki says Brenda Lee/Gwen McCrae first recorded/released it.

I am shocked to my core!

When I was little my best friend’s dad was a HUGE Willy Nelson fan. He said Willy wrote it, Elvis sang it but Willy reclaimed it later because it was too good for Elvis.

My life is a lie. If I can’t trust Amy’s Dad about Willy Nelson, who can I trust about anything??

No I’m sure it wasn’t. It’s on Spotify but I think it was just an album track.

Think Evergreen was an album track. A very good one it must be said. Westlife liked a cover too, like Mandy, Uptown Girl and Miss You Nights. Mandy was particularly good. You Raise Me Up was a cover too.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 08/09/2024 00:47

Another one. Joe McElderry’s X factor song The Climb was originally by Miley Cyrus

So much X Factor crap was a cover as they didnt have time to sort an original. Matt Cardle murdered a version of Biffy Clyro's Many of Horror

World Party, nothing to do with Guy Chambers.

In fairness, Guy Chambers replaced Karl as keyboardist in The Waterboys, so it’s an understandable confusion.

There aren’t that many famous people from Prestatyn, so I’m happy to fly the flag for Karl.

Message In A Box is great song by Karl too, and Is It Like Today is a delight.

My favourite was "I Have A Dream" as I am a huge ABBA fan, although that song is not one of my favourites and I think Westlife did an amazing cover of it.

Totally reminds me of the end of the 1990s and the nervous excitement surrounding the move to a new millennium (which, of course, proved to be as uneventful every other new year before & since) given that it was a Christmas hit for Westlife.

The original Valerie was written and sung by Steve Winwood in 1982.

Why do birds suddenly appear, every time you are near?

They long to be, close to you!

Released by Richard Chamberlein in 1963

I did not know that.

Richard Chamberlain was a teen-idol in the TV series Dr Kildare in the 60’s, just before I became a teen.
In that clip he sounds more like an actor than a singer.

Kildare is an odd name to choose for a doctor.

Different Valerie. You're thinking of the one that was covered by Eric Prydz with the sexy video.

Steve Winwood had some brilliant songs though. Higher Love covered by Whitney, thenn Kygo remix later on.

Well yes, but there are some bands who only ever released their own material, which I think makes them pretty special. The only band I can think of is ABBA, but there will have been others.

Ah, yes, ABBA, famous for being the only band to release songs they wrote themselves...

Yes, and I'll tell you what's even scarier - the song was only 20 years old when they covered it.

I was obvs. 25 years younger then, so a 20 year old song seemed to be a lot older to me then, than the almost 25 year old Westlife cover feels to me now.

Yep its crazy. This thread has set me off on memory lane looking at albums from 20 years ago and I can't believe how good they were and why did I stop listening to them?!
