Songs you didn't realise were covers

I almost grew up with Natalie Imbruglia's Torn. I used to put the music video channels on TV in the early morning before my parents got up. I loved it, she was one of my first crushes. I watched the video of it over and over again and was bemused how the man was so normal when she was so incredible.

It wasn't until much later I found out that the song was a cover, and the original by Ednaswap was almost identical so it wasn't even an interesting cover!

At Last - Etta James - although she made it her own.

laughinggnome · 07/09/2024 22:38

I think we're alone now - Tiffany for all the 80's kids

nietzscheanvibe · 07/09/2024 22:39

Rod Stewart, The first cut is the deepest (originally by Cat Stephens)

Twiceover · 07/09/2024 22:39

Also for the 80s kids - The only way is up - Yazz. The original is amazing.

I Think We’re Alone Now by Tiffany.

Or did I dream that?

I Think We’re Alone Now is on Lene Lovich’s first album (Stateless), which came out in the late 70’s, but I don’t think that was the original version either. (I should google it, I know.)

LunaNorth · 07/09/2024 22:40

Sorry for the crap link - it’s the Bucks Fizz version of What’s Love Got To Do With It?

SoupDragon · 07/09/2024 22:40

Tainted Love by Soft Cell. I always thought that was the original version.

I googled - it’s by a 1960s band called Tommy James and the Shondells.

MultiplaLight · 07/09/2024 22:42

She's the one is a cover 🤯

You were always on my mind. Thought it was a petshop boys song.

Nine Inch Nails! It doesn't seem like the two should have even co-existed.

This is what I always say!

What’s Love Got To Do With It by Tina Turner.

It’s a cover of a Bucks Fizz song!

Haha sort of. It is actually very common for song writers and publishers to write a track and trial it with lots of different artists then pick the strongest version. But specially before the days of the internet, those versions not preferred wouldn’t be released so wouldn’t be heard. “What’s Love Got To Do With It” was turned down by Cliff Richard, offered to Bucks Fizz, who demoed a version, then recorded by Tina, whose version was preferred by the songwriter.

It is a good piece of pop trivia though

Justleaveitblankthen · 07/09/2024 22:43

UB40 Red Wine (again, you have to be a certain age even for this cover)

Neil Diamond wrote and recorded it.

Red Red wine. 🙂‍↔️

Quacksalver · 07/09/2024 22:46

Jeff Buckley sang the original Song To The Siren and This Mortal Coil covered it. I think somebody on here told me that.

Hedgewitch123 · 07/09/2024 22:46

Prodigy out of space, is a reggae song originally.

Dario g sunchymre very cleverly remixed from 80s song life jn a northern town.

Still very common. Jojo Siwa recently went viral with Karma, written and recorded but ultimately not released as a single by another artist. This also alleges it was originally for Miley Cyrus, over a decade ago.

Jeff Buckley sang the original Song To The Siren and This Mortal Coil covered it. I think somebody on here told me that.

It was Jeff’s father, Tim, who wrote STTS - and I only just found out that George Michael also covered it. Gorgeous song.

Why do birds suddenly appear, every time you are near?

They long to be, close to you!

Released by Richard Chamberlein in 1963

If you listen to Sia's discography from the mid-2010s you can generally work out which songs were intended for other artists. There's Katy Perry songs, Rihanna, Beyonce in there.

Valerie sung by Amy Winehouse is a cover of the original by the Zutons Valerie

WhamBamThankU · 07/09/2024 23:02

Jose Gonzalez Heartbeats from the very famous advert was a cover of an amazing song

Andoutcomethewolves · 07/09/2024 23:02

I always knew House of the Rising Sun by the Animals was a cover, but I thought it was originally by Bob Dylan. Turns out that was a cover too! The original was recorded in the 30s and it's been covered many times since.

Nothing Compares 2 U was originally by Prince.
