Songs you didn't realise were covers

I almost grew up with Natalie Imbruglia's Torn. I used to put the music video channels on TV in the early morning before my parents got up. I loved it, she was one of my first crushes. I watched the video of it over and over again and was bemused how the man was so normal when she was so incredible.

It wasn't until much later I found out that the song was a cover, and the original by Ednaswap was almost identical so it wasn't even an interesting cover!

Valerie - Amy Winehouse covered it. Originally by the Zutons

D12troop · 07/09/2024 23:04

Getting some drift on here mixing up people who wrote or demo's songs as opposed to bonafide releases and ergo covers.

Five finger death punch - gone away. One of my favourite songs as well

Tainted Love by Soft Cell. I always thought that was the original version.

Gloria Jones did the original. It was a Northern Soul tune.

Filipferdana · 07/09/2024 23:07

Norah Jones 'Cold Cold Heart' - heard it, loved it, then heard the Hank Williams OG and loved it even more!

SeagullSong · 07/09/2024 23:09

A little surprised people didn't realize Amy Winehouse covered Valerie, it was only around a year after the original. Give me the Zutons any day.

Rocking all over the world was originally by John Fogarty, later covered by Status Quo.

Joan jett - I love rock n roll was the arrows

Blondie - hanging on the telephone - the Nerves

Thin lizzie - Whiskey in the jar is a cover. The Dubliners did it in the 60s but it's older than that

It's Oh So Quiet by Bjork is a cover version. So is Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.

Bob Dylan did knocking on heaven’s door before guns and roses

Bob Dylan didn't just sing it, he wrote it, as he did dozens of other songs later covered by innumerable other artists. All Along the Watchtower is one of his, later covered by Jimi Hendrix. Best cover ever.

D12troop · 07/09/2024 23:15

Coolio's Gangsters Paradise, sort of

NigelHarmansNewWife · 07/09/2024 23:19

A lot of covers were never talked about as such, as far as I can remember, e.g. Mona by Craig McLachlan!

Karmaisagod · 07/09/2024 23:20

Apparently younger people think "All By Myself" was by Celine Dion - the original that I, being of a certain age, am familiar with is by Eric Carmen. Tag, the Liev Schreiber character in the utterly, utterly fabulous and thoroughly recommended The Perfect Couple on Netflix reminded me of this.

‘I Will Always Love You’ - Dolly Parton

The Whitney Houston version is the cover. DP wrote and recorded it.

What’s Love Got To Do With It by Tina Turner.

It’s a cover of a Bucks Fizz song!

Sort of, although the song was offered to several artists, and although Bucks Fizz were offered it before Tina Turner, she managed to get her version out before they did, and it remained unreleased by Bucks Fizz until the year 2000.

Are you saying that “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” wasn’t a Cyndi Lauper original?

Jose Gonzalez Heartbeats from the very famous advert was a cover of an amazing song

The Knife! One of my favourite bands. I do like the Jose Gonzales version but they're so different.

Dual Lupa- love again. Borrows heavily from a song called Your Woman by Tyler James.
Which was recorded by White Town in the 90's
Which was a reworking of a 1933 song by Al Bowlly and the Lew Stone Monsigneur Band.
Which itself was a reworking of a 1932 song by Bing Crosby.

However the original Bing Crosby song and the Dua Lipa one have virtually nothing in common.

cakeorwine · 07/09/2024 23:26

Apparently Wonderwall by Mike Flowers pop was written by some band from Manchester. I forget the name.

Are you saying that “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” wasn’t a Cyndi Lauper original?

"Girls Just Want To Have Fun" was written for a man iirc. Cyndi changed a bunch of the lyrics and released it as her own song. She didn't write it but it isn't a cover. It's her song.

Say hello wave goodbye - David gray, cover from the 80s (can’t remember who it was)

Soft Cell?

This is what I always say!

They both have their good points, but Trent Reznor is a genius. I first became aware of NIN when I heard their cover of Joy Division's Dead Souls from The Crow soundtrack.
Has anyone else heard Peter Seller's versions of the Beatles' Help and A Hard Day's Night? If not, they are hilarious!

You say that, but I don't ever remember hearing the Zutons version on the radio when "Valarie" was current. Did it get much of an outing? I never liked Amy Winehouse, or indeed any of the female singers from that period (there seemed to be so many, maybe there wasn't) but even I was aware of her music.

girljulian · 07/09/2024 23:30

My bafflement when watching Paul McCartney’s Glastonbury set and he started singing the Postcode Lottery song. Apparently he wrote it. Whoops

Dunnoburt · 07/09/2024 23:31

Songbird - Fleetwood Mac the original.....covered by the more notorious version by Eva Cassidy
