I'm 41 and just figured out how to stop my kitchen bin smelling!

Greetings all

Having a smelly kitchen bin is the bane of my life. But I live in a top floor flat so I don't want to be trotting down to the big outside bin constantly.

I finally realised this week that if I shove all the smelly stuff like fish skin into a bag in the freezer and just take it down say once a week, the problem is solved!

Does anyone do this already? I am I the last person to figure it out?

What the hell else is obvious that I am not doing?!

Just take the bin out more regularly

SideProfile · 07/09/2024 19:01

Don’t you have a food waste bin?

ScaryGabbyGabby · 07/09/2024 19:01

I put some kitchen roll with a few drops of Zoflora in the bin before I put the bin liner in it.
That & regularly emptying stops mines smelling.

FuckThePoPo · 07/09/2024 19:02

I have chicken, fish etc and I don't have smells but I also keep my bin to a small size. That probably helps. I haven't got freezer space (families generally don't) so I would double bag items more likely to smell and empty the bin as often as possible

Herewegoagainandagainandagain · 07/09/2024 19:03

We empty our indoor bin every 2-3 days (sooner if it is getting a bit ripe)

Hardly a hardship to put the bin out regularly even if it is a couple of flights of stairs! 5 minute job tops! And much easier than messing about with putting food scraps in a freezer!

MrsKwazi · 07/09/2024 19:04

Just take the bin out every day.
Surely you leave your flat at least once a day?

Apileofballyhoo · 07/09/2024 19:05

I've done that too, OP. I think it's s good idea.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 07/09/2024 19:05

I learned on here that your freezer trick is good for preventing maggots during the summer. (You take out the leftover food on bin day.)

Reallybadidea · 07/09/2024 19:06

I can absolutely guarantee that if I did that I'd forget what it was and defrost it for dinner at some point.

OhcantthInkofaname · 07/09/2024 19:18

I keep most food waste separate from other items. I take it out daily.

Coffee grounds, tea leaves and bags, and citrus peels go in with the regular. They seem to make the bin not smell bad.

Twynklebell · 07/09/2024 19:19

Have done that for ages - there are only 2 of us so doesn't take up masses of room but any waste food eg chicken bone goes in the freezer in a bag or newspaper then straight in the bin on bin day. Helps prevent maggots in the dustbin.

Mooneywoo · 07/09/2024 19:20

Once a week is the reason it’s smelling. That’s nowhere near enough.

Even if you live in a top floor flat, surely you leave regularly? You could bring the bin out any time.

SallyWD · 07/09/2024 19:22

If I have smelly food like fish skin I put it in a small bag and immediately put it in the dustbin, not the kitchen bin. I don't care if my dustbin smells. I don't spend any time sniffing it.

OriginalUsername2 · 07/09/2024 19:23

We only have twice-a-month pick ups for household waste. Sometimes we have an out of date bit of meat we don't want sitting around rotting so we’ll freeze it until bin day. I put it in a Sainsbury’s bag - the orange bag means do not eat!

jigglywigglyhungryhippo · 07/09/2024 19:23

Definately empty the bin more.

However, I also add bath salts to the bottom of the bin (not in bin bag) and replace every couple of days. Smells like lemon and also absorbs any moisture/small leaks if the bag rips a little.

Tip away and rinse... clean bin

Yes! Ive been thinking it would be great to have a small freezer just for this.

Houseshmouse · 07/09/2024 19:29

Perhaps try not eating rotting flesh.

Davros · 07/09/2024 19:32

Great idea OP. Sadly my freezer is full of chocolate and ice for adding to wine and cocktails. I had some out of date rice recently and kept it to empty into the food recycling bin to soak up juice

overgrowntoddler · 07/09/2024 19:34

Yep I'd do this in summer. Especially if day it's a chicken carcass or fish skin the day after bin day! It really annoys my husband.

My friend told me about it as she did it when she lived in Australia where it's pretty common I hear?

We don't have a bin as have a greedy dog so we have a bin liner hung on a cupboard for and replace it daily.

Unlike @SallyWD I do care if my bin smells and maggots are so grim Envy

Pinguastic · 07/09/2024 19:35

Yes, do freeze gross smelly stuff if it’s not collection day.

I put food waste in a small tie handle bag before I put it in the kitchen bin. Stops smells and maggots.

Gingernaut · 07/09/2024 19:39

Freezer, Bin Buddy and composting bin

DeCaray · 07/09/2024 19:40

I take a carrier bag out with me every day and dispose of it in a public bin.

Oldraver · 07/09/2024 19:44

Yep I have a small plastic box we put cooked food, today we had fish so fish skins DS had chicken so bones went in there. Any scrapings off plates go in the freezer

I still put veg peelings things that don't smell in the normal food bin

We've also recently started take Ng soft plastics to Sainsbury's (not collected by council) and that helps with no smell in the kitchen bin.

I am a bit obsessive over maggots so don't want to attract them
