I'm 41 and just figured out how to stop my kitchen bin smelling!

Greetings all

Having a smelly kitchen bin is the bane of my life. But I live in a top floor flat so I don't want to be trotting down to the big outside bin constantly.

I finally realised this week that if I shove all the smelly stuff like fish skin into a bag in the freezer and just take it down say once a week, the problem is solved!

Does anyone do this already? I am I the last person to figure it out?

What the hell else is obvious that I am not doing?!

Emptying the kitchen litter bin every day is batshit! 😬

Unless you have a family of 10, there is absolutely no need. DH and I empty ours every 3-4 days. Can even stretch to 5 in the winter when it's not hot (so no smells.) There would be fuck-all in it after 1 day!

Just take the bin out more regularly

She literally said she lives in a top floor flat and doesn't want to be taking it down all the time. How do you know she doesn't have health conditions or a disability that makes this task difficult ? Learn to read

Yes, I do that. We have food waste collection but foxes get the bin if it includes meat or fish. So only cooked veg goes in it directly. Meat & fish scraps go in a tupperware pot in the freezer and get put out on the day the food waste gets collected.

Don’t you have a food waste bin?

Yes, putting all food waste in a small food waste caddy completely eliminates main bin bin-juice and bad smells (also make sure you wash any packaging that fish etc was in before binning or recycling). Plus weirdly the food waste bin doesn’t tend to smell, even though it would if it was mixed in the main bin. We keep small food waste caddy under the sink in the cupboard and empty it into larger outside food waste bin couple of times a week. Putting a slice or two of stale bread at the bottom of the food waste caddy in the bag also helps to reduce caddy juice.

I would get a smaller bin and take it out every day when you go out. Definitely wouldn't put rubbish in the freezer, I might end up eating it by accident!

This was my first thought too but sounds like lots of people don’t have this.

I’m surprised at people who empty bins daily. How on earth do you generate that much rubbish?!

Potato peelings, carrot peelings, bean bits, cauliflower leaves. Tea bags.
Chop bones, fish skins, chicken bones..cat food left overs. Not all of this every day obviously.

OddityOddityOdd · 07/09/2024 23:24

How does anyone think they're going to eat a load of chicken and fish bones & waste by mistake , out of a container clearly labelled SCRAP?

SecondFavouriteDinosaur · 07/09/2024 23:26

I could easily empty a small bin daily. Family of 5, 3 meals a day, so 15 meals. Fruit peelings, veg peelings, meat containers etc, it all adds up.

Of course it will smell after 2 days! Those trays fish come in absolutely stink as do chicken trays and the plastic cover on them.

I do think OP that not going out at least every other day can't be good for your mental health though.

You will NOT smell it within 2-3 days if you have a decent kitchen bin - like I put a link to earlier. One with a tight lid. FGS! 🙄

Put the crap into the kitchen bin and shut the lid. NO SMELLS will come out, unless someone leaves the lid open!

TooLateToApologiseTooLaaaate · 07/09/2024 23:28

Agree, it's odd. Even if the plate isn't labelled, surely you'd take the food out and see/feel for/smell what you're eating first before you do.

Edit: Thread moved quickly as I was typing. I was responding to Oddity's post.

TooLateToApologiseTooLaaaate · 07/09/2024 23:35

I've known only 3 people who empty bins daily and it's because one had a rat problem, another an ant problem and another a very sensitive nose that they couldn't bear even perceived smells.

The bit about defrosting it for dinner was A JOKE.

I can absolutely guarantee that if I did that I'd forget what it was and defrost it for dinner at some point.

😁

localnotail · 08/09/2024 10:34

Just take it out more often? Do it when you are leaving the flat - I cant imagine you are staying home for several days on end?

If you’d read the OPs posts, you’d see she said that she often doesn’t leave the flat for 4-7 days

I'm afraid it wasn't really...based on bitter experience of trying to make apple crumble with mashed potato and pizza with lentil and tomato soup 😳

Hollyhocksandlarkspur · 08/09/2024 10:56

I line compost bin with newspaper or cardboard and graab handful of mint from outside front door to keep it sweet smelling. But in your top floor flat love the freezer idea. Fish skins go in my dog so quite useful🤣

Twynklebell · 08/09/2024 11:01

Each to their own - whatever works for someone works for them. OP - do what works best for you. No idea why people think its gross.. its not like you're mixing everything in the freezer together!

@Twynklebell it's only food is isn't it, the way some people are carrying on you'd think she was putting the contents of the cat litter tray in there!

TinyYellow · 07/09/2024 21:12

Get a sink with a waste disposal fitted. A waste disposal sink was one of the things I loved most about living in a flat.

@TinyYellow

no, don't be suggesting that, they're incredibly bad for the waste water system.

sassyclassyandsmartassy · 08/09/2024 18:41

Peppermint oil on either cotton wool balls or pads or kitchen roll, keeps flys away too!!!

I have a tiny bin similar to the size of the food waste bin.
I don’t want waste building up anyway.

CatsnCoffeeetal · 08/09/2024 19:22

You don’t know how many flights of stairs. Also, you don’t know the OP’s circumstances. Maybe a single mum to baby + toddlers and/or mobility issues, so would have difficulty leaving kids/managing stairs multiple times etc

Beautifulweeds · 08/09/2024 20:50

Our bin is overflowing daily so doesn't have to smell too bad lol 😆
