I'm 41 and just figured out how to stop my kitchen bin smelling!

Greetings all

Having a smelly kitchen bin is the bane of my life. But I live in a top floor flat so I don't want to be trotting down to the big outside bin constantly.

I finally realised this week that if I shove all the smelly stuff like fish skin into a bag in the freezer and just take it down say once a week, the problem is solved!

Does anyone do this already? I am I the last person to figure it out?

What the hell else is obvious that I am not doing?!

Yes. Ours is emptied daily. Straight away if it's fish.

@CaptainMyCaptain

thats a bit smug when she's already said she's in a top floor flat & struggles to even shower sometimes.

@GapTshirtsAreShitQualityTheseDays

yeah it's quite a well known 'thing' but there are lots of things we don't 'all' know!

your MH sounds a bit rough at times. What's your physical health like? How physically difficult do you find the stairs? How many floors up are you??

Do you have a neighbour that might be able to help you??

I wish we had a food bin collection!
I bought cheap plastic bags and bag the meat etc but feel guilty about the plastic waste! But at least our waste is incinerated and not landfill.
Especially as I save the soft plastic for supermarket collection bin.

How do tou know it's incinerated please? I w always thought that was a better solution than landfill

Just take the bin out every day.
Surely you leave your flat at least once a day?

THIS

Narwhalsh · 07/09/2024 20:42

Wait, you are freezing your waste?! You know that will actually cost you money?

summersolsticeagain · 07/09/2024 20:47

This is standard in Australia.

I put some kitchen roll with a few drops of Zoflora in the bin before I put the bin liner in it.
That & regularly emptying stops mines smelling.

I do similar but when I put the bin bag in a sprinkle some neutodol carpet freshener in there!

Gettingbysomehow · 07/09/2024 20:52

What a fabulous idea. I'll do that next summer.

somereallyniceadvice · 07/09/2024 20:54

Once upon a time my old landlady used to put the waste in a big bag and go out for a coffee or shopping something small or just walk few roads down to town and throw it on the way. No maggots, no smells

somereallyniceadvice · 07/09/2024 20:55

LOL, sorry, too sleepy already. She used to do this every day
I make my husband throw the bins daily also. If he does not do it, I do it

nosleepforme · 07/09/2024 20:57

That sounds revolting! Leftover or old perishables go in the freezer? Makes me want to throw up. Just take out the bins!

Putting your household waste in a litter bin counts as fly tipping I believe.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 07/09/2024 21:05

I use neutradol carpet fresh powder or bin fresh powder in the bottom of bin and bin liner on top of that. My bin gets taken out daily, so it never smells.

BashfulClam · 07/09/2024 21:06

I used to live on the 4th floor and my outside communal bin was at the other end of the block. I still emptied my bin every second day at least. Our neighbour used to leave his stinking rubbish on the landing, obviously intending to take it on his next trip outside. Opening the door it was disgusting with his smelly rubbish 2 feet from our door. One night DH came home a bit tipsy and saw the stinking bag sitting there. He opened it and quietly posted it all back through the neighbours letter box!

I put bicarbonate of soda in the bottom of the bin and spray inside each bag with a squirt of disinfectant when I change binliner.

CaptainMyCaptain · 07/09/2024 21:08

I’m surprised at people who empty bins daily. How on earth do you generate that much rubbish?!

It's a small bin and doesn't get filled every day but it does get emptied daily.

Frostythecat · 07/09/2024 21:11

@babasaclover our council have no landfill sites in our county. The council also state it is incinerated on their website.
They also state that any metal left over after incinerated is recycled. That was stated on a Facebook post from them!

Alevelnamechange · 07/09/2024 21:11

We have a food bin (small one inside and a larger one outside that's collected by the bin men).

If we have something potentially stinky, (fish skin, chicken carcass etc.) and the weather is hot, we freeze it.

Often we forget about it for several weeks in the freezer, but at least it doesn't go rancid in the bin.

TinyYellow · 07/09/2024 21:12

Get a sink with a waste disposal fitted. A waste disposal sink was one of the things I loved most about living in a flat.

EI12 · 07/09/2024 21:16

I would rather trot down and take the bin out more often than stink out the freezer.

oh ffs - from the block of flats, out and in their communal bins and then off to your walk. Surely you can use your imagination a little bit more, not in the evil way

FoodieToo · 07/09/2024 21:16

That is gross !!! Surely you can pop a bag out daily . I throw bags out multiple times a day .

somereallyniceadvice · 07/09/2024 21:17

The many ways people will get lazy but not move your but and change your bin liner every day and throw it out. WHAT the fuck is wrong with English people

TooLateToApologiseTooLaaaate · 07/09/2024 21:17

You can also put food waste in a smaller bag and wrap in cling film, then put in the bin. It takes much longer for smelly stuff to smell through that. By the time they start smelling, you're ready to take the bin out.

Frostythecat · 07/09/2024 21:18

There is no room in my freezer.
Putting rubbish in local outside bins is classed as fly tipping here too.

redgum · 07/09/2024 21:18

Food waste bags avoids this problem I find, does your council do that? The only time I notice the bin smelling is when it's warmer and I put raw chicken in the bin, it's the only food waste I sometimes forget to put in the food waste because of how I handle it to prepare and I regret it every time!

Lifeomars · 07/09/2024 21:18

i double wrap stuff that has the potential to go smelly, I cooked a piece of salmon tonight so have done that with the skin. I hate emptying my kitchen bin because it means opening my kitchen door and letting the almost constant noise from next door fill my home and then seeing the utter state of their yard which looks like a rag and bone storage space. Before they moved in things were fine, I used to have a little garden and was often outside looking after it but two years of non stop noise and rubbish have put a stop to that. My yard is overgrown with weeds now as I hate spending time out there so when I do empty the bin I feel ashamed and guilty. Neigbours shout and carry on until the early hours of the morning most days/nights.
