I'm 41 and just figured out how to stop my kitchen bin smelling!

Greetings all

Having a smelly kitchen bin is the bane of my life. But I live in a top floor flat so I don't want to be trotting down to the big outside bin constantly.

I finally realised this week that if I shove all the smelly stuff like fish skin into a bag in the freezer and just take it down say once a week, the problem is solved!

Does anyone do this already? I am I the last person to figure it out?

What the hell else is obvious that I am not doing?!

I put food waste in a small tie handle bag before I put it in the kitchen bin. Stops smells and maggots.

I do this but in non recyclable food packaging and then put it in the bin at the end of each day.

GapTshirtsAreShitQualityTheseDays · 07/09/2024 19:47

Hahah gosh lots of responses!

OK I admit that I am a bit of a slattern at times plus I tend to hibernate in winter so I often go 4-7 days before leaving the house.

At times having a shower or taking the bin down can feel like a monumental task!

😂

Read this to OH and he's laughing away. He knows I'd probably do the same

Perhaps try not eating rotting flesh.

🙄

GapTshirtsAreShitQualityTheseDays · 07/09/2024 19:50

I did use to put food waste in plastic bags before putting in the bin but again, winter is the problem - if the radiator is on in my (small) kitchen it tends to gently warm the bin containing the fish skin...and that stench permeates through any plastic bag, no matter how tightly knotted!!

So now I have a special drawer in the freezer for minging things! (Lol at accidentally defrosting it for dinner one night)

I wish we had a food bin collection!
I bought cheap plastic bags and bag the meat etc but feel guilty about the plastic waste! But at least our waste is incinerated and not landfill.
Especially as I save the soft plastic for supermarket collection bin.

Just take the bin out more regularly

Yes. Ours is emptied daily. Straight away if it's fish.

Crucible · 07/09/2024 20:21

This is standard in Australia. The UK is getting hotter by the year so we will be adopting more and more of their practices.

MO308002 · 07/09/2024 20:23

I take the bin out every day. I cannot imagine putting trash in the freezer, sorry.

I also live in a flat up several flights of stairs.

I think if you don't leave the house for 4-7 days at a time and you have the struggles to do so to the extent that you are freezing trash rather than taking the bin out then you might benefit from some therapy. I don't mean that as a dig or anything, I'm serious. I don't think it's healthy.

mondaytosunday · 07/09/2024 20:26

You don't have a separate food bin? We have that collected every week. I have a small container by the sink and brown bin outside

PaillettenBedeckt · 07/09/2024 20:26

That's a really clever idea.

I'm sure some people never have so much as a hair out of place, but I love tips like this.

TheChosenTwo · 07/09/2024 20:27

I’d opt for a smaller bin and emptying it more regularly. I mean if the freezer thing works for you then that’s fine but honestly if you’re not leaving the house for 7 days at a time and you have bags of frozen rubbish you might start getting known as being a crazy lady 😂

Stirmish · 07/09/2024 20:28

I have a small sort of compost bin with a lid where I put food stuff in as I'm chopping stuff up on the countertop

I put a bag in it so I can just lift it out and pop it in the bin outside

I have only just started doing this recently and I'm in my 50's Blush

I did put all the scraps in a bowl then chucked it straight in the bin before but I prefer this way now as I can chuck what I need to in there

Just4thisthreadtoday · 07/09/2024 20:29

Reallybadidea · 07/09/2024 19:06

I can absolutely guarantee that if I did that I'd forget what it was and defrost it for dinner at some point.

🤣🤣😂😂😂

Stirmish · 07/09/2024 20:29

I got the compost bin thing from Lidl

I didn't put a small bag in at first and hated cleaning the thing so realised a bag recycled from my online shop where they put meat in was the perfect size

Stirmish · 07/09/2024 20:30

It's perfectly normal for people in hot countries to put stuff in their freezers before bin day so you're not alone

Areas are different. Not all councils in the U.K. have a food collection and not all people on mumsnet are in the UK.

I put some kitchen roll with a few drops of Zoflora in the bin before I put the bin liner in it.
That & regularly emptying stops mines smelling.

I do this too. 😇

greenleaveseverywhere · 07/09/2024 20:34

We just have a small bun and empty daily or sometimes twice daily. Whenever I leave the house, I take it out.

I also put some kitchen roll sprayed with Zoflora in the bottom of the bin to soak up and leaks and create a fresh smell.

This seems like a really odd and unnecessary step to me. I've lived in hot countries before ...

LoobyDoop2 · 07/09/2024 20:37

That’s really weird, why would you want waste sitting next to food you’re going to eat in the freezer? Just take stuff that’s going to smell- like fish wrapping- straight to the outdoor bin rather than letting it sit around inside. And rinse out medium-smelly stuff like empty yogurt pots before you bin them.

You should be leaving the house daily for your own mental wellbeing even if just to take the rubbish out! Freezing rubbish is a disgusting plan.

I can't speak for the OP but the council here collect garden and food waste together in one bin. And if you don't have a garden you don't get that bin so no other option but to put food waste in with general waste.

This was my first thought too but sounds like lots of people don’t have this.

I’m surprised at people who empty bins daily. How on earth do you generate that much rubbish?!
