I'm 41 and just figured out how to stop my kitchen bin smelling!

Greetings all

Having a smelly kitchen bin is the bane of my life. But I live in a top floor flat so I don't want to be trotting down to the big outside bin constantly.

I finally realised this week that if I shove all the smelly stuff like fish skin into a bag in the freezer and just take it down say once a week, the problem is solved!

Does anyone do this already? I am I the last person to figure it out?

What the hell else is obvious that I am not doing?!

Hahah gosh lots of responses!

OK I admit that I am a bit of a slattern at times plus I tend to hibernate in winter so I often go 4-7 days before leaving the house.

At times having a shower or taking the bin down can feel like a monumental task!

How do you manage to do that, do you wfh? Sorry, don't mean to sound presumptuous at all. It sounds very nice to not have to go out every day and shower and empty the bin as often. That's the beauty of living alone, no one to answer to, do what you want, when you want.

I often find all of the responsibilities I have overwhelming and wonder what it what be like to just look after myself, just for a week would be good 👍

Our bin doesn't smell, but most food is put in the compost and it's not even full after a week!

The food waste bin goes out when it's full, every couple of days, we're lucky and have a large communal food bin outside in the shade. I'm not sure that I like the idea of putting food waste in the freezer, the bags do sometimes split and I don't want egg shells, potato peelings and coffee grounds on all my frozen food.
We don't have much landfill rubbish but if there is anything niffy, such as packaging from meat or fish, it's rinsed and wrapped tightly in another piece of rubbish before putting it in the main bin which has a good lid. I don't find that masking the smell with disinfectant really works, so if it does get smelly I simply take it to the dustbin.
I always rinse things before putting them in the recylcing bin which is also in the kitchen.
All the plastic bags now go in with the Ocado bags to be recycled.

Freezing food literally stops it rotting so there's no hygiene issue.

Isn't changing your bin liner every day wasting a lot of plastic?

There's nothing particularly wrong with my mental health. I just get a little seasonal affective disorder. Plus I'm lazy and a homebody at heart. So I don't leave the flat just for the sake of it. Albeit my mother was obsessed with getting out at least once a day.

Well no one is there to watch you so do whatever works for you. It is however good to get out more for fresh air and interact with the real world. At least you've been honest saying you're lazy and fortunately you seem to have the option to not have any criticism from sharing with someone. Xx

@TinyYellow

no, don't be suggesting that, they're incredibly bad for the waste water system.

Also some things, like egg shells and fibres from vegetables, will drop down into the trap in the main drain and block it. I know because we had one and had to clear it regularly

I used to do the same to keep smelly stuff out of the bin. Now our council does a weekly food waste collection I keep a small caddy in the bottom drawer of the freezer for food waste that I can empty into the outdoor food bin if it gets full before collection day. My OCD has now latched onto the idea of never putting anything smelly in the kitchen bin ever again, so any packaging that can’t be recycled and has bits of food on it also goes in the freezer and gets taken out with the rubbish once a week. I love never having a smelly bin any more. But then again I do have sensory issues so bad smells are a big deal for me!

It's a bit worrying that flies are getting on people's food to the extent they have maggots. This is not intended as a criticism.

Our outside bin is cleaned, disinfected and new bag once a month and we try and not put anything too smelly in there. Cat poo is saved elsewhere until bin collection day

And still the fucker flies still lay eggs in the creases of the bin bag round the top

We have a waste disposal all the food waste and uneaten stinky cat food, gone for good.
