I'm 41 and just figured out how to stop my kitchen bin smelling!

Greetings all

Having a smelly kitchen bin is the bane of my life. But I live in a top floor flat so I don't want to be trotting down to the big outside bin constantly.

I finally realised this week that if I shove all the smelly stuff like fish skin into a bag in the freezer and just take it down say once a week, the problem is solved!

Does anyone do this already? I am I the last person to figure it out?

What the hell else is obvious that I am not doing?!

We've had a weekly food bin collection for years and anything that doesn't go in the compost bin goes into a bag and into the freezer, then taken out the evening before collection and put into the food waste bin.

The thought of little critters or mouldy food sat in my food waste bin fills me with horror.

I take a carrier bag out with me every day and dispose of it in a public bin.

This is not legal, a public waste bin is not for household waste.

Why do you do this anyway - rubbish is collected from your property for free.

HeySummerWhereAreYou · 07/09/2024 21:25

This is batshit. Freeze the stinky crap. Are you having a laugh @GapTshirtsAreShitQualityTheseDays Confused ???

The bin won't start stinking for 2-3 days no matter what you put in it. Why are you incapable of taking the rubbish out to the wheelie bin every 2-3 days! You don't have to go to it every time you want to put something in the bin!

And get a decent bin in your kitchen that has a lid that closes firmly.

You said you leave the house just every 7 days. Why is that?

pinkstripeycat · 07/09/2024 21:26

Our bin never smells because nothing with food or food residue ever goes in it.

We only empty the kitchen bin once every 2 weeks as most things go in the recycle bins and the kitchen bin never really fills up.

I put a few drops of deodoriser or disinfectant in the new bin bag when it’s changed.

Most things can be recycled. Paper, glass and tin go in the recycle bin. We recycle clean dry plastics (like crisp packets and the bags fruit comes in) by putting them in the recycle bins at Tesco or Aldi.

You should be leaving the house daily for your own mental wellbeing even if just to take the rubbish out! Freezing rubbish is a disgusting plan.

Freezing food waste before it goes out in the bin is not disgusting, why do you think it is? Freezing is a way to keep waste products stable.

I don't do it, but it makes good sense.

Raw chicken scraps in 25C+ beg to differ Grin that shit needs chucking same day!

Of course it will smell after 2 days! Those trays fish come in absolutely stink as do chicken trays and the plastic cover on them.

I do think OP that not going out at least every other day can't be good for your mental health though.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 07/09/2024 21:37

While I can seen it might work functionally I have to say the idea of putting leftover, waste food in the freezer really repulses me. And I’m really not house proud or that particular at all. I accept it’s a psychological response but for me that is not a solution I could ever adopt. And I do also fear I’d mistakenly defrost the remains of a rancid chicken for dinner!

I remain of the view that, disability or other health issues aside, taking your waste outside to the bin each day is the way to go.

GapTshirtsAreShitQualityTheseDays · 07/09/2024 21:38

Freezing food literally stops it rotting so there's no hygiene issue.

Isn't changing your bin liner every day wasting a lot of plastic?

There's nothing particularly wrong with my mental health. I just get a little seasonal affective disorder. Plus I'm lazy and a homebody at heart. So I don't leave the flat just for the sake of it. Albeit my mother was obsessed with getting out at least once a day.

Leave it to mumsnet. OP talks about bins and posters go on about going out everyday and mental health.

Some people do fare much better (mentally, etc) indoors than outdoors but I'm sure it doesn't matter as long as we follow the norm. 🙄

Edit: Just posted before I saw OP's last post. See, there we go.

Houseshmouse · 07/09/2024 19:29

Perhaps try not eating rotting flesh.

Aye got to say this thread is reinforcing my veganism 🤢

Herawouldntstandforthis · 07/09/2024 21:40

Avoid eating fish or meat to enjoy a fresh-smelling bin all the time ✌️

Flatulence · 07/09/2024 21:40

Just have a small bin (carrier bag size) and take it out daily or at least every other day. And keep the bin itself clean by giving it a wipe every time you change.
My bin is in a cupboard and I add a bin buddy thing for good measure - in case something like the wrapping from raw fish is in there for a few hours/ a day but I don't really need it.

My freezer is miniscule so freezing waste isn't viable.

TooLateToApologiseTooLaaaate · 07/09/2024 21:41

Vegetables waste stink to high heavens too, and as quickly as meat/fish.

CraigBrown · 07/09/2024 21:46

I find the idea of freezing food waste really gross. Just take the bin out regularly. Having to store food waste in with your frozen food so it doesn’t stink your flat out but you can’t be bothered to take it outside sounds really dysfunctional.

INeedNewShoes · 07/09/2024 21:50

I agree OP. It's a horrible waste of plastic to empty a bin daily or with similar regularity unless it's a tiny bin with a tiny bag in it.

We're lucky that we have a food waste collection so anything smelly like fish waste goes in that. With the packaging I'll wash it before binning it so it doesn't smell, unless the bin is near full and needs emptying anyway in which case I just chuck it in and take it straight out.

redgum · 07/09/2024 21:52

This thread is peak MN when someone is getting attacked for just offering some advice on how to avoid a smelly bin...

redgum · 07/09/2024 21:52

And having their mental health called into question over it?!

DancingTurtle · 07/09/2024 21:56

our bins get emptied daily. No plastic bags.

i agree that not leaving your home for days is not healthy.

Haroldwilson · 07/09/2024 22:10

You're all doing it wrong, crisp up your fish skins and eat them, it's the tastiest and most nutritious bit!

I can't believe people take their kitchen bin out daily. What a waste of plastic.

Our kitchen bin has no food waste in and I rinse non-recyclable soiled packaging before binning, so it doesn't smell. Food waste in compostable bags in a small bin on work surface, take out every 2-3 days.

somereallyniceadvice · 07/09/2024 21:16

oh ffs - from the block of flats, out and in their communal bins and then off to your walk. Surely you can use your imagination a little bit more, not in the evil way

@somereallyniceadvice

Never mind 'oh ffs!' 🙄 Dumping your personal shit in public bins IS flytipping, it is NOT allowed, and you very likely WILL get fined for it. (if you are caught!)

It is not 'using your imagination' to dump your smelly maggot filled crap in the public waste bins near your house, because you don't want it in your own wheelie bin. What if everyone did that? FFS! 🙄 Put your own shit in your OWN BIN!

The many ways people will get lazy but not move your but and change your bin liner every day and throw it out. WHAT the fuck is wrong with English people

You sound very angry about this.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 07/09/2024 23:06

Fizzypineapple · 07/09/2024 19:00

Just take the bin out more regularly

Yup. We empty ours every day

MrsPadhd · 07/09/2024 23:10

Do people not empty their bins daily? 🤢

RogueFemale · 07/09/2024 23:12

We have weekly food waste collections where I live. You put food waste in a separate caddy, which I keep outside.
