Ahhh pls help. Dh left flight booking so late we are now flying first. I am dreading it. We usually fly economy but had to fly on a certain day so had to take what was left. I know I shouldn’t dread it but I really am!

im currently sitting here with straggled half dyed hair, nails that look like they’ve been used on a cheese grater and clothes that would shock a medieval peasant. Do I need to go and put some effort in?!

Enjoy being in first class.
I used to work at a company where the owner who was a lovely guy looked more like the caretaker.
Wear what you're comfy in.

mrswhiplington · 04/09/2024 08:49

I've never flown first class but if you've paid for your tickets I can't imagine they care what you look like. Enjoy the experience.😄

theemmadilemma · 04/09/2024 08:49

No. If you can afford the seat, you just sit in it and (hopefully) enjoy the experience.

How lovely, what a treat! I’ve flown business a couple of times and that in itself was wonderful as I’m usually in cattle class 😂
I’d suggest as long as you’re clean and smell fresh and are polite that’s about as much prep as you need - aka just be a respectful human being!

Overtheatlantic · 04/09/2024 08:51

Can you afford to buy a couple of dresses for daytime wear? I would do that and put your hair up in a bun. Otherwise just enjoy the experience!

avacadojam · 04/09/2024 08:51

This is very reassuring! I last flew business class in 2007 and that was it. Never flown first. that was before dc which explains the haggard look I now go for these days…

Apfelkuchen · 04/09/2024 08:52

If it will make you feel better, go and get your nails tidied, but really, the crew won’t care.

Wear clean, comfortable clothes for the flight and enjoy the experience 😊

avacadojam · 04/09/2024 08:52

I have money but my dc seem to be more expensive every day so I end up not really looking after myself enough, it doesn’t overly bother me but I usually avoid situations where I’m expected to dress up. Live in the countryside where it’s acceptable to wear same crap over and over

Which airline is it?

TheChosenTwo · 04/09/2024 08:53

Oh, and come back and tell us about it, I’ll never fly first class so would be nice to hear about the decadence!

MrsSkylerWhite · 04/09/2024 08:53

Don’t worry about it. First class is lovely, the staff will be great. Very rich people don’t give a shiny about what other people think. Only problem is you’ll never want to fly coach again! Enjoy.

Wear what you like for the flight (within reason)!

But there's a bigger point here - don't sacrifice your whole self for the kids. You are worth the investment. Get the haircut. Do your nails. Feel good about yourself.

YeahComeOnThen · 04/09/2024 08:56

Don't be putting yourself under pressure to go & buy new clothes.

shower & wash hair
cut nails & remove any old nail polish.

don't wear fragrance

wear something comfortable.

remember you're paying them, not the other way around!!

Enjoy the comfort, ignore anyone dripping in 'brands '

Yes please OP do this! We flew economy with Virgin Atlantic last week back to Heathrow from San Fran. The flight out was a delight, coming back was full, night flight and DD's seat couldn't recline so being the mum martyr I am, I moved to the only free seat - a middle seat in between two farting strangers. It was dire so I'd like to know what 1st class is like!

MidnightPatrol · 04/09/2024 08:56

It doesn’t matter what you look like - people are dressed in all kinds of ways in the premium cabins.

I’d argue dressing up to go to the airport is a bit naff tbh.

MidYearDiary · 04/09/2024 08:57

Well, I like the idea of a medieval peasant time-travelling to fly first, so I say stick with what you're wearing and say to the cabin crew 'Prithee, bring me some more of the bubbling intoxicating liquor'. Grin

Seriously, no prep needed. Wear something comfortable. Enjoy it.

AmandaHoldensLips · 04/09/2024 08:57

Do NOT dress up!
Wear comfortable casual clothes. Loose fit for flying is always best.

Flying first class is bloody amazing. Really comfortable, fabulous service, delicious food and wines, anything you want just ask type of thing.

Enjoy!

Xiaoxiong · 04/09/2024 08:57

AMEN. Yes your kids are only little once and it's so short etc etc but that also means that the time is so short that if you sacrifice even self-care wholly and utterly for them, it's too much. You can do your nails every so often, it doesn't need to be all or nothing!

And in terms of first class, absolutely no one will care. Wear your most comfortable clothes. You might even have your own cabin if you're flying Emirates and no one will even see you at all!!

I only see the 'dressing for the flight' thing on here -- does this really happen???

longdistanceclaraclara · 04/09/2024 08:58

I wear yoga pants with a long line vest, t shirt and hoodie. Nobody will care what you look like, honestly. Enjoy!

FiloPasty · 04/09/2024 09:00

Who are you flying with? If you’ve time you can get to the airport early, depending on airport/airline there are often free treatments in the airline lounge so you can get a manicure blow dry etc there.

Enjoy!

BibbityBobbityToo · 04/09/2024 09:04

Google if the airport has a nailbar in the departure lounge and get your nails done there. I always think tidy nails show you've made an effort then wear comfy clothes.

My cousin introduced me to these over bank holiday weekend when we both had long flights (hers way longer than mine at 28+ hours! Mine was just 9): https://www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/products/E464427-000/00?gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADM0H6hh9kF1PWxtj95EvqNyXcrWK&gclid=Cj0KCQjwiuC2BhDSARIsALOVfBJ1alE5nYv-VwtTjBCy9MVZU5F5E8vKkdrOFeca9jcM_Av_toeKzCIaAkY3EALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds&colorDisplayCode=09&sizeDisplayCode=003

So comfy to not have to wear a bra but still look presentable. I wore mine with very loose soft jeans but linen or jersey trousers would be even better. Throw a pullover in your handbag for warmth.

But, yes, as others have said, just dress for comfort. No one cares what you look like.

Lagirl20 · 04/09/2024 09:06

you might want to think about grooming outside of the context of this flight. Sorting your hair and nails out, even an at home manicure would be a good place to start. You should feel presentable and comfortable to be seen daily, not just for a flight

Onthegrid · 04/09/2024 09:07

It does depend on the airline and flight but my go to travel clothes are a pair of jeans a t-shirt and a hoody paired with comfy trainers. Sometimes I switch out the jeans for baggy linen cropped trousers. As a plus size person I rarely look smart and I haven’t been refused entrance to the aircraft yet. Flying to the US jeans and trainers are like a uniform. Flying east to HK, Singapore there are usually smarter people mixed in. Flying into Europe it can be quite business like on some flights however DH always goes in Jeans as he is never straight to a meeting.

I will say I am always clean, my hair tidy and my nails filed but I don’t wear make up so you get the natural 55 year old me.
