Ahhh pls help. Dh left flight booking so late we are now flying first. I am dreading it. We usually fly economy but had to fly on a certain day so had to take what was left. I know I shouldn’t dread it but I really am!

im currently sitting here with straggled half dyed hair, nails that look like they’ve been used on a cheese grater and clothes that would shock a medieval peasant. Do I need to go and put some effort in?!

I have flown business twice and wore elastic trousers and a hoodie. Most people were dressed casually for long haul flying. As long as you’ve showered and smell fresh who cares? Enjoy the experience

OneFastDuck · 04/09/2024 09:43

Just be clean and comfortable nothing else really matters.

Planes are the same as buses for the very rich- you wouldn't dress up for the bus would you? It's only a certain type who dress up for first class or those who've somewhere to be straight after the flight.

Richest lady I know sometimes walks around with a plastic bag instead of a handbag- she could buy the plane you'll be on and not even blink.

@Sd352 thank you

I was business class but got upgraded ( I flew for business ). I had a new pair of black leggings and a longish jumper. It really doesn’t matter
now, I regretted the jumper as I was so hot. I was given Pjs to wear as it was a late flight. White trainers as the Dubai airport was huge to walk to my connecting flight. I literally had to run.

wear what you are comfortable in and enjoy it. It was my one and only experience and I loved it. There was nothing upmarket about other peoples
dress.

CurlewKate · 04/09/2024 09:45

@Overtheatlantic "Can you afford to buy a couple of dresses for daytime wear? I would do that and put your hair up in a bun. Otherwise just enjoy the experience!"

Seriously? Is it suddenly 1950 again?

Flossflower · 04/09/2024 09:47

I think as long as you and your clothes are clean, I wouldn’t care less. The worse passengers are ones who smell and that can be regardless of class.

YellowAsteroid · 04/09/2024 09:47

Just make sure you don't smell (and that includes your feet).

Whenever I fly Business or 1st it's usually for work and I have a jacket and dress that are comfortable for flying & that I can go straight to work in.

But really, just dress normally.

Sdpbody · 04/09/2024 09:49

My parents fly business/first on all long haul flights.

My dad is working class from a rough estate and left school at 14. He enjoys wearing his chill out clothes that are a little messy because he enjoys the look on peoples face when he turns up in lounges and check in desks. My mum always looks immaculate so they look like chalk and cheese most of the time!

TheBossOfMe · 04/09/2024 09:50

I fly first a lot (work privilege!) - I always wear joggers, trainers, a decent t-shirt and hoodie. That's pretty par for the course in first - lots of frequent flyers who care more about comfort than anything else. Just make sure they're clean and not completely knackered, make sure you're clean and don't smell. Then sit back and enjoy!

laveritable · 04/09/2024 09:52

The super rich : do NOT dress up.

ranchdressing · 04/09/2024 09:53

The scruffier you are in luxury settings the richer I would assume you are to be honest! It's just a mode of transport OP don't overthink it and have a great trip!

DodoTired · 04/09/2024 09:53

Just think that you might be one of those ultra rich people that don’t need to care how they look like and what others think :)

behave confidently and unfazed (fake it till you make it) and you’ll be fine!

@Sd352 do the uniqlo tops fit well? I'm a 14 36Dd and not sure what to get?

Sorry for hijack @avacadojam . Have an amazing time. And also make time for yourself ongoing.

@alrightluv I'm a 12 34DD and wear large, for the camisole I sometimes go to XL so its a but less clingy. They have a whole range of them with built in bras https://www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/women/innerwear/airism?path=%2C%2C37322%2C best thing ever for flights

@avacadojam enjoy your flight, don't stress about what you're wearing for the flight just wear comfortable clothes you can wash and wear again for the flight back, or comfortable clothes but that will be useful for wherever you are going.

avacadojam · 04/09/2024 10:08

Thanks so much for this advice I am off to find any shop that might aid my quest to be less scruffy

Flight is 9 hours and definitely going to the lounge first comfort eating. And yes I don’t look after myself and hopefully this will be the kick up the backside one needs to not let oneself go so badly!

I was in the Virgin lounge once with a massive BBC "star". He was beyond scruffily dressed and, frankly, looked like he needed (in DMs words) "a damn good wash".

But to echo PP, you are worth both time and money; when you get back, book that hair appointment and find that 20 minutes to sit and clip/file your nails.

MidYearDiary · 04/09/2024 08:57

Well, I like the idea of a medieval peasant time-travelling to fly first, so I say stick with what you're wearing and say to the cabin crew 'Prithee, bring me some more of the bubbling intoxicating liquor'. Grin

Seriously, no prep needed. Wear something comfortable. Enjoy it.

@MidYearDiary Hahah!!! This really made me chortle. 😁

YellowAsteroid · 04/09/2024 10:12

I always get cold on aeroplanes - I'd advise against a camisole. Have a soft overshirt or jumper.

DonkeyyDoo · 04/09/2024 10:15

Dear me - you can not get on a flight and sit in first class looking like a scruff! The other guests will think you’ve mistakenly taken a left instead of a right at the door. 😱

avacadojam · 04/09/2024 10:16

And I’ll be sure to request bubbling intoxicating liquor @MidYearDiary

The last time I flew first to the US (which I have done very seldom, I should say, and this was only because DH flies a lot for work and had points), Jeremy Irons was also in first, wearing a tweed cap, baggy trousers, a ravelled-looking jumper and cardigan and what looked a gingham tablecloth around his neck as a scarf.

He looked great, but also as though he might have been taking the bins out, playing in a trad session, or playing Local Eccentric in a TV series.

Anything goes...

Carrotsandgrapes · 04/09/2024 10:22

I go first a lot with work (would never pay myself!). I dress for comfort, no differently than I would going economy.

On the routes I fly, there's generally a mix of people in first. Yes, there are a few posh/rich people (you can spot them more by their attitude than what they're wearing). But most people are "normal". They're there because work are paying, or because it's a big one-off treat (see a lot of honeymooners, older couples celebrating anniversaries etc). You can normally spot them because they're photographing everything!

Go early to hammer make the most of the lounge. Drink champagne on the plane. Enjoy looking through the posh toiletries they give you.

There's often an arrivals lounge as well, so you can get snacks and freshen up before your onward journey.

Sd352 · 04/09/2024 09:33

Fit me quite well (36B, 12/14, got a large) although would fit someone larger chested better as I didn’t quite fill it out.

These look fab! Do you think they would be supportive enough for bigger boobs, or are they quite loose fitting. I'm H cup so I need some control 😂

CoffeeGood · 04/09/2024 10:25

As ex-crew all I would ask is that you don't smell. And that includes perfume. Other than that, wear what's comfy, say please and thank you (I'm sure you do whenever but some people think crew are slaves) and you're good to go!

I am always sweating like the proverbial pig. I wear the coolest clothes possible.

I find planes are the same temperature as hospitals!
