Ahhh pls help. Dh left flight booking so late we are now flying first. I am dreading it. We usually fly economy but had to fly on a certain day so had to take what was left. I know I shouldn’t dread it but I really am!

im currently sitting here with straggled half dyed hair, nails that look like they’ve been used on a cheese grater and clothes that would shock a medieval peasant. Do I need to go and put some effort in?!

Go to the airport early so you can enjoy the luxury of the first class lounge!

Pookerrod · 04/09/2024 09:09

Is it long-haul? If so, don’t worry about what you’re wearing, change into the provided pj’s when you get on, snuggle down, get comfy and enjoy your glass of champagne!

You can shower in the first class lounge at either end. You’ll also have lovely amenity packs full of high end products to give yourself a bit of pampering on the flight or once you’ve landed.

Enjoy! I’m super jealous!

Ginnnny · 04/09/2024 09:10

I wouldn't worry what you look like. Not looking perfect and put together will make you look richer haha

OP, we flew first class British Airways London to Sydney.
I didn't notice what anyone wore.
I changed into the free pyjamas before take off and only took them off before Bangkok and put them back on for the second leg! (we still have them, 16 yrs later!)
Literally no one cares.
Go and have a lovely time!

SphinxOfBlackQuartz · 04/09/2024 09:11

You turn up to first class looking a mess - they will all assume you are the richest one there Grin

Commiserations through. It does rather ruin flying economy for you in the future 😂

Imalongtimepostingmum · 04/09/2024 09:12

And I hope you are going a long way so can make the most of it all!!

If you are doing two legs, make sure you take your amenity kit, they give you a fresh one for the second leg. Mine was anya hindmarch!

By the time we got back, we collected 6 kits and four pairs of pj's.

Yes please OP do this! We flew economy with Virgin Atlantic last week back to Heathrow from San Fran. The flight out was a delight, coming back was full, night flight and DD's seat couldn't recline so being the mum martyr I am, I moved to the only free seat - a middle seat in between two farting strangers. It was dire so I'd like to know what 1st class is like!

People still fart in First! It just takes slightly longer to reach you 😆

herecomesautumn · 04/09/2024 09:15

I'm disappointed that we haven't had the "crisp white shirt" yet 🤣

As others have said OP wear comfortable loose clothing, yoga pants, hoodie, t-shirt.

Anyone that cares what you look like isn't worth bothering about

Sadmamatoday · 04/09/2024 09:15

Wow, so lucky! Who cares, just enjoy it!

ttcat37 · 04/09/2024 09:15

Dressing up for a flight is not necessary. There’s no dress code and they will not turn you away or treat you any differently for wearing whatever you want. People don’t dress any differently in business/ first. Just wear comfies.

Andoutcomethewolves · 04/09/2024 09:18

I mean, who would you be trying to impress?? For what it's worth, I've flown first twice (both paid for by work!) and both were long haul and at least partly overnight. BA provides pyjamas and it was quite amusing to see all the originally suited n booted business men and women shuffling around in PJs and slippers, women with their rollers in etc 😆 but I can guarantee nobody is going to give a shit what you look like!

Enjoy!

Changingname1988 · 04/09/2024 09:19

Oh wow, that’s so exciting! Maybe your first class tickets include fancy lounge access? I think some of those have beauty treatments available at big airports, maybe you could have your nails sorted there before the flight 😃

Woodpeckersinthegarden · 04/09/2024 09:21

I felt a bit intimidated when I flew first class. Especially going up the escalator at Terminal 5 where everyone seemed to be dressed up to the nines in designer gear and handbags. They all got off at the business class lounge though. When I reached the first class lounge I was relieved to find that everyone there was a scruff like me in either jeans or jogging trousers.

Lagirl20 · 04/09/2024 09:06

you might want to think about grooming outside of the context of this flight. Sorting your hair and nails out, even an at home manicure would be a good place to start. You should feel presentable and comfortable to be seen daily, not just for a flight

Sorry, what? If you don't have your nails regularly manicured you are not presentable?

FFS.

I only see the 'dressing for the flight' thing on here -- does this really happen???

I used to fly long haul business/upper a lot (~1 x month) in an old job. I think dressing for comfort is definitely a thing. So certainly more elastic waistbands and “athleisure” than was common elsewhere pre Covid.

I definitely saw some aspirational bags and travel wraps but never a sense that this was the norm. Saw some celebrities that looked done to the nines and some that looked as if they’d crawled out of a bin!

Never saw a crisp white shirt! At least not at the end of a 13 hour flight!,

You will see all sorts in first class, please don’t give it a thought.

People who often or routinely fly FC certainly don’t dress up or tart themselves up for it. Just wear something clean and comfortable.

Flibflobflibflob · 04/09/2024 09:27

i’ve always treated flying as a chore I have to get through, never been in first but I’ve slouched into business wearing the most comfortable clothes I own so at least I’m not uncomfortable. Then I lay down asap and tried to go to sleep to kill some time. I imagine most people are like that.

Honestly I’ve know millionaires who liked to carry things around in plastic bags instead of just getting a briefcase. I would also assume you were so loaded that you just didn’t give a fuck. I think also no-one is going to be judging you on what you look like. They will be thinking about their own stuff.

whatisheupto · 04/09/2024 09:28

No. All the wealthy people I know look like they've just come in from a muddy horse ride (they have). You'll look proper posh.

alrightluv · 04/09/2024 09:30

@Sd352 do the uniqlo tops fit well? I'm a 14 36Dd and not sure what to get?

Sorry for hijack @avacadojam . Have an amazing time. And also make time for yourself ongoing.

Epidote · 04/09/2024 09:32

As soon as you are clean, comfortably dreesed and polite I don't think anyone will bother much about it.
If makes you feel better get your nails and hair done but tbh is just a flight, the mean to get where you want to go.

Fit me quite well (36B, 12/14, got a large) although would fit someone larger chested better as I didn’t quite fill it out.

honeylulu · 04/09/2024 09:33

I've never flown first class but my observation is that passengers in all classes tend to dress for comfort which makes perfect sense!

Clean comfy clothes, brushed hair and a shower beforehand is all you need to fit right in. If you have the chance to nip to Boots in the airport maybe get some nice travel size face wash and tinted moisturiser. The circulated air can be drying and tinted moisturiser helps my skin feel (and look) a lot better. I wash off and reapply shortly before landing.

I'm a busy working mum and can't be arsed getting nails done so I cut them fairly short and apply some light coloured polish (take 5 mins) if I want to feel slightly more glossy. Light colours don't show up any chips easily!

Enjoy, I'm jealous!

Treelichen · 04/09/2024 09:37

I dress for comfort and usually wear T-shirt, hoodie, baggy sweatpants and trainers. I’ve never felt out of place in first class. To be honest, I tend to sleep most of the time so don’t really care what anyone thinks😂

It certainly used to, when flying was a lot more expensive and far fewer people could afford to do it. No longer, thank goodness.
But we lived abroad and I can remember as a teenager at boarding school in the UK in the 60s being taken shopping by an aunt or two for 'clothes for the flight' -- usually a horrible skirt suit of some kind, suitable only for a then-40 year old.

My late DM would have had a conniption fit if I'd arrived there (middle east) in jeans when she came to pick me up at the airport. It Just Wasn't Done.
I have a photo of me, aged 14, arriving at Frankfurt airport in a shiny teal skirt suit, frame handbag and kitten heels. I look about 38. This was when they had photographers taking everyone's picture as you came down the plane steps then handing you a card so you could order your photo. (My mum must have done this.) Weird.

If you can afford to book a long haul first class flight at short notice then you probably are... absolutely nobody minds how you present yourself. Enjoy your flight!
