Ahhh pls help. Dh left flight booking so late we are now flying first. I am dreading it. We usually fly economy but had to fly on a certain day so had to take what was left. I know I shouldn’t dread it but I really am!

im currently sitting here with straggled half dyed hair, nails that look like they’ve been used on a cheese grater and clothes that would shock a medieval peasant. Do I need to go and put some effort in?!

I wear a tracksuit and comfy trainers. No make up. Offered pjs to change into and spend the flight asleep. The champagne is lovely, but it’s the luxury of lying flat in a bed that attracts me.

badgerpatrol · 04/09/2024 10:27

First class seems always full of kids so I doubt they care.
Just wear something clean & comfy.

thecrossIambearing · 04/09/2024 10:28

You normally fly economy but your husband has booked flights that are maybe 2500 pounds each?

Wow op, I'm very jealous! Enjoy every second. If it was me, I would just make sure I was clean, tidy and comfortable. I'd probably wear jogger/yoga pants, vest top or tshirt and zip up hoody that's easy to take off/pop on. Clean hair and take off any chipped nail polish.
Which airline is it? I have a family member who works for Qatar Airways so I've got a few pairs of the flight Pj's!

Can you afford to buy a couple of dresses for daytime wear? I would do that and put your hair up in a bun. Otherwise just enjoy the experience!

I hope this is a joke! @avacadojam wear something you feel comfortable in, be clean, don’t smell 🤣Enjoy the experience, you aren’t there to impress the cabin crew

EzraJones · 04/09/2024 10:37

I have a friend who flew first class in jeans, t-shirt and work boots 😅

Buffypaws · 04/09/2024 10:37

I wear comfortable clothes to fly as I’ll be sat there for hours. If I’m having a laugh I’ll do a Juicy tracksuit. I’ve never reached the dizzy heights of first class but certainly don’t change the outfit for business. I take inspiration from Jim Jeffries and enjoy looking like a bag of shit.

Movinghouseatlast · 04/09/2024 10:40

Beware, this will ruin you for life for economy!

I flew first for work it was fabulous! Honestly nobody will be looking at you. The way the seats are arranged means you don't really see other passengers.

I wore a jersey maxi dress almost like a nightie really so comfortable but looks good. People don't dress up, the people in suits are on business and will be going straight to a meeting.

HidingFromDD · 04/09/2024 10:42

Be prepared for airport staff to look you up and down and ask if you’re in the ‘right’ queue (yes, I’m referring to you Manchester airport security 😁).

tbh I didn’t gaf, I was clean, comfy (joggers, trainers and a sloppy jumper) and travelling on business earning 6 figures plus.
do make sure you check out the lounges and pick up the pjs even if you don’t wear them. They’re really comfy later!

samarrange · 04/09/2024 10:44

Are you going long-haul? Then it will be fabulous.

Short-haul, not so much. I don't know if any European airlines will use the term "first-class" on short-haul, but I see it used in US discussions sometimes. I don't think anyone has all three (economy, business, first) on a narrow-body plane.

That said, I remember Air France in the 1980s with all three on (I think) a Caravelle, which was smaller than an A320. One row of first, three rows of business. Utterly pointless from Amsterdam to Paris where the time spent at cruising altitude is about 15 minutes, but it looked very posh.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 04/09/2024 10:45

If you could get and have time to get your hair dyed and maybe nails done and grab a new dress I’d do that. If it makes you feel more comfy. We have in our high street 2 big hair salons (Rush and Headmasters) and Blue Tit (hair) and another 2 salons there. Usually there are late night appointments on Thursdays but you could ring on the off chance. There are about 4 nail salons in the same area and 2 boutiques (different styles) and a vintage shop which sells clothes.

But don’t pressurise yourself re above. I’m not sure what I’ve done. I’ve flown first and business class and these were upgrades from economy class. I don’t think I looked anything special but I do get told I dress well a lot.

lazymum99 · 04/09/2024 10:47

I last flew first class about 10 years ago to New York BA. Most people changed into the pyjamas they gave you and the slipper socks so I really wouldn’t worry.
the lounge is one of the best bits and I also liked the fact that they knew your names as you walked one. Made me feel a bit special.

Alongthepineconetrail · 04/09/2024 10:48

Black wide leg trousers
White top
Light weight long cardy/cover up
Trainers

Get your hair cut & blow dried & paint your nails. You'll look fab, simple is the way to go.

Why on earth would she need to do this?

LlynTegid · 04/09/2024 10:54

Have a pleasant flight, think about how in future you can prevent having the dilemma and concerns again.

Getonwitit · 04/09/2024 10:55

My hair is never dyed, my nails are broken and i usually wear jeggings, a sweatshirt and slip on trainers when travelling. As long as you are clean and look like your clothes fresh on this morning you will look like every other passenger turning right. Don't drink too much of the fizz😁

Upthejunctionandroundthebend · 04/09/2024 10:59

I found 1st class passengers more scruffy than business class, the 'rich' like the upper class don't try to impress.

SeasickAccountant · 04/09/2024 11:00

Dear OP, the great news is that you've got this the wrong way round. The more money you have the LESS effort you need to make. If you can afford First Class you can turn up however the hell you like, and it's the staff's job to make YOU feel fabulous! They are service providers there to serve you. It's not a garden party at the Palace with a dress code. Please enjoy being coddled and looked after and don't spoil it by judging your appearance. Enjoy the treat !!!

HotHotChilli · 04/09/2024 11:02

My go to outfit for business (and occasionally first using points) is a black pair of smart tapered trousers with an elasticated waist, a cotton shirt (with stretch) in a pattern, never a plain light colour in case of spillages. A pashmina to use as a scarf/light blanket (I hate airline blankets) or an extra bit of padding around the pillow, pair of ballet pumps, but take a pair of socks and I always pick up hotel slippers to walk around the cabin in (not all airlines give you them, sometimes not even in first), but a change of top to a lightweight cotton loose t/shirt always long sleeved (and carry extra underwear in hand baggage.) to put on to sleep in, then change back to the shirt, or another top if Im going from hot to cold of vice versa for my final destination. You dont say where you are going or who your flying with, that could also be a factor to make your journey more comfy and feel more refreshed at the end, esp if say your travelling with Emirates and have access to a shower on the plane before you arrive.

I dont wear trainers, cannot be done with the faff of taking them on off at security and find them to restrictive after a long flight.

I see all sorts from people who look like they have just rolled out of bed, to head to toe in Gucci/Prada/Versace and everything inbetween.( Inc a guy who refused to give up his very expensive Gucci jacket to crew to hang up, and made sure everyone know it was to expensive to let out of his sight, so he sat in his seat for 7 hours with his very expensive jacket on getting more crumpled by the hour, he did not even realise he could of just hung it up behind him next to his seat....sorry I digress...)

People will not care and depending on which airline your flying with you may be in an enclosed suite anyway so no one will see you, just be clean and tidy and comfortable.

Expat2 · 04/09/2024 11:02

Everyone wears trackies and gym pants in the first lounges I frequent. I then fly business or premium economy for work. You see the most overt need to display labels in premium economy. No one in business (or the first lounge) cares how you look.

Aussieland · 04/09/2024 11:02

Lagirl20 · 04/09/2024 09:06

you might want to think about grooming outside of the context of this flight. Sorting your hair and nails out, even an at home manicure would be a good place to start. You should feel presentable and comfortable to be seen daily, not just for a flight

Haha. Why?

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 04/09/2024 11:05

Don't overcook it on the booze particularly if there is a stand up bar area. The frequent and savvy travellers will barely touch the stuff and go and get their heads down.

I was on a flight once where a businessman had to be carried to his seat. He was shoeless and covered in vomit when I walked past him on exit.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 04/09/2024 11:13

The real aristos and wealthy people comfortable in their own skin don't give a toss what the plebs think of them. Comfy athleisure wear will be fine. Have a look at Naomi Campbell's ensemble for flying and then don't do that! You have as much right to be there as any other paying passengers.

I'm surprised the crew let him board if he was that drunk - if someone can't even walk properly, they become a danger to other passengers in the event of an emergency.

LancsLass1 · 04/09/2024 11:17

I heard they don't let you into first class unless you have had a manicure and hair extensions.
