Ahhh pls help. Dh left flight booking so late we are now flying first. I am dreading it. We usually fly economy but had to fly on a certain day so had to take what was left. I know I shouldn’t dread it but I really am!

im currently sitting here with straggled half dyed hair, nails that look like they’ve been used on a cheese grater and clothes that would shock a medieval peasant. Do I need to go and put some effort in?!

This made me laugh! I would put in a little effort but you do you!

Packetofcrispsplease · 05/09/2024 18:07

I’ve never flown first class but I have flown business quite a few times long haul .
Last time I was wearing some soft jersey animal print dark green trousers just from Next , an oversize cotton T-shirt with short sleeves and I had a dark cotton cardigan too .
wore slip on sneakers , just Rieker sneakers 👟 no designer labels for me ever .
i don’t get manicures at all but my nails were short and clean plus hair was freshly washed and I’d styled it a little .

LuluG76 · 05/09/2024 18:07

Former crew here. Literally wear what you like and most importantly are comfortable in. Everyone who I served in First did - particularly the celebs 😂 You have paid for the seat. And just enjoy the experience. You deserve some time for you!

I don’t think you need to look any better than anyone else . Most people wear casual clothes for long haul ( track suits , lounge wear, etc). With no make up and long hair in a bun . Those that dress up look ridiculous.
Just enjoy a seat that doubles as a bed, lots of legroom, food and drink on tap etc … that’s what you’re paying for .

Just make sure you put some clean PJ'S on and re-do the Mum-bun, before you get on the aeroplane. Make sure your odd socks are also clean and covered by long PJ bottoms. You'll need a giant pair of sunglasses and a puffy silver jacket, like Bianca from Eastenders. Really go the whole slob in 1st class.

Sorry, OP I couldn't resist. I am childish.

I'll leave.

woodlandtrees · 05/09/2024 18:44

I fly business and on odd occasion first .

Wear what you feel comfortable in . Dressing up for first is so 1950s.

Enjoy the flight.

Tigertigertigertiger · 05/09/2024 18:47

This is a lovely problem to have Smile

MLMsuperfan · 05/09/2024 18:52

Dress code for first class is black tie. If you violate the policy you will be asked to leave the plane mid flight.

Can you afford to buy a couple of dresses for daytime wear? I would do that and put your hair up in a bun. Otherwise just enjoy the experience!

You can wear anything you like in first class but as mentioned just be clean, lol!
people trying to upgrade need to look like they made an effort, but you paid for your seats - enjoy !

Franjipanl8r · 05/09/2024 19:37

Have you never heard of “too posh to wash”?! It’s the landed gentry who are often the scruffiest.

I have money but my dc seem to be more expensive every day so I end up not really looking after myself enough, it doesn’t overly bother me but I usually avoid situations where I’m expected to dress up. Live in the countryside where it’s acceptable to wear same crap over and over

I live in the countryside too. I pretty much live in shorts and t-shirt, until October. I’ve forgotten what it feels like to feel groomed!

As long as you don’t pong, nobody will care!

Bernardo1 · 05/09/2024 21:08

Mostly other slobs.

Money doesn't denote class.
Somebody probably will want yr seat as its better.

Sadly there are no longer any dress code expectations in First or Business.
Relax and enjoy

Sadly? Really? If people are clean and wear clean clothes I'm more than happy. I don't travel to show of my wardrobe and am absolutely not interested in anybody else's. And no, my fellow-traveller's bad-hair-day, tuxedo, jeggings, Manolo's, supermarketloungewear, manicure would impress nor upset me. As long as they showered before leaving for the airport that is.

Mummamap · 05/09/2024 21:21

No effort needed. We often fly first class. No one dresses up for it anymore. Just be comfortable and enjoy it. Make the most of the first class lounge and any freebies - lets face it, you have paid for them.
Relax and enjoy the menu and the extra space.

DancingNotDrowning · 06/09/2024 00:29

I really rate Virgin Upper Class - it’s extremely good and has many of the things that BA only offer in first (proper mattressy thing, decent duvet, PJs). Plus the Clubhouse at LHR is the bomb!

for me it doesn’t matter what extras they offer, the fact that you have to get out of the seat to have it put into bed mode is bloody irritating. Give me BA club over virgin upper any day for that alone. As for BA first over upper there’s no comparison at all.

Oooh oooh look at me.. i'm flying first class.. lol

Packetofcrispsplease · 06/09/2024 08:07

I also can’t get over the people suggesting cashmere throw / cardigans and white t shirts 😆
Possible you will spill coffee or food and then it’s ruined 🤪 I know I spilled drips of coffee on me and blobs of ice cream .
I drank water only until we were closer to arrival time .
I wore dark patterns and a cotton cardigan although on the flight out it was cooler and I used the heavier cotton kimono style cardigan provided.
On return they didn’t provide those ?

Jack80 · 06/09/2024 08:13

We have been put in premium on a TUI flight unexpected as they messed up our flights we paid for. I just wore what I normally wear to the airport either leggings and a nice top and trainers/rocket dogs or sandles or lounge pants or a lounge suit or pants and a top. I have my nails done for my holiday depending on what job I'm in if I can or paint them myself, put a hair dye on, I always have my hair dyed that month.

As long as you feel comfortable and clean you will be fine even without nail polish on. Let us know how you get on.

You’d like the new Virgin plane configuration then! Personally I prefer the older style that flips over despite the inconvenience of having to stand up 😁

So how did it go, OP?

Loubilou23 · 06/09/2024 17:58

Was going to say the same but didn't want to sound mean either!

I regularly fly BA business (world and suites) as well as Delta One and Virgin Upper but had the opportunity to fly BA first a couple of times and that is another league, particularly the First Lounge in Terminal 5!

Never too late to grow up or at least make an effort.

Presumably some of us fully weaned by now and generally managing to stay clean at meal times so not finding this to be such an issue.
