Ahhh pls help. Dh left flight booking so late we are now flying first. I am dreading it. We usually fly economy but had to fly on a certain day so had to take what was left. I know I shouldn’t dread it but I really am!

im currently sitting here with straggled half dyed hair, nails that look like they’ve been used on a cheese grater and clothes that would shock a medieval peasant. Do I need to go and put some effort in?!

It certainly used to, when flying was a lot more expensive and far fewer people could afford to do it. No longer, thank goodness.
But we lived abroad and I can remember as a teenager at boarding school in the UK in the 60s being taken shopping by an aunt or two for 'clothes for the flight' -- usually a horrible skirt suit of some kind, suitable only for a then-40 year old.

My late DM would have had a conniption fit if I'd arrived there (middle east) in jeans when she came to pick me up at the airport. It Just Wasn't Done.
I have a photo of me, aged 14, arriving at Frankfurt airport in a shiny teal skirt suit, frame handbag and kitten heels. I look about 38. This was when they had photographers taking everyone's picture as you came down the plane steps then handing you a card so you could order your photo. (My mum must have done this.) Weird.

Ahahaha I love the idea of this- a picture of me disembarking, covered in my kids meal, deranged eyes, a grey pallor to the skin, up on the living room wall

I’ve only flown first class once but I was wearing a hoodie and basketball shorts as I wanted to be comfy, was expecting to be the odd one out, but lots of the other passengers were wearing trackies, onesies type situation.

"We have in our high street 2 big hair salons (Rush and Headmasters) and Blue Tit (hair) and another 2 salons there. Usually there are late night appointments on Thursdays but you could ring on the off chance. There are about 4 nail salons in the same area and 2 boutiques (different styles) and a vintage shop which sells clothes."

Thanks so much for this advice I am off to find any shop that might aid my quest to be less scruffy

Flight is 9 hours and definitely going to the lounge first comfort eating. And yes I don’t look after myself and hopefully this will be the kick up the backside one needs to not let oneself go so badly!

Try not to frame it as 'let yourself go' which implies it's doing it for everyone else but rather put it as putting yourself first more. It's clear that you feel more confident when you are more put together so you deserve to put aside some time and finances for that.

Having said that no-one cares what anyone else looks like in first class. I was a bit disappointed really as I thought everyone would be famous and in sequins (I'm neither but I had a dream...) 😂

Andwegoroundagain · 04/09/2024 11:37

Literally no one cares what you look like ! They'll all be focused on themselves/their sleep etc

Enjoy !

1990thatsme · 04/09/2024 11:38

I travel First quite often, and yes, I do take my four kids and there are often quite a few of them!!

I agree with PP that people dress up more for Business class and First is very laid back and comfy.

I wear joggers, t shirt, hoody, trainers.

InSpainTheRain · 04/09/2024 11:39

It doesn't matter what you wear or look like as long as it's comfortable. You paid for a seat, it didn't come with conditions attached to it. The only thing I'd say is ensure you are clean and don't smell for the comfort of others. Enjoy your trip!

If you could get and have time to get your hair dyed and maybe nails done and grab a new dress I’d do that. If it makes you feel more comfy. We have in our high street 2 big hair salons (Rush and Headmasters) and Blue Tit (hair) and another 2 salons there. Usually there are late night appointments on Thursdays but you could ring on the off chance. But don’t pressurise yourself re above. I’m not sure what I’ve done. I’ve flown first and business class and these were upgrades from economy class. I don’t think I looked anything special but I do get told I dress well a lot.

Sorry but 🤣🤣

Oh yes, this reminds me of when I met an adult man in a Pikachu onesie in first class. 😍

Saschka · 04/09/2024 11:40

I flew 1st class with a baby a few years ago. Everyone looked normal, no celebs or royalty. Wash your hair, cut your nails and you’ll be fine.

Clothes-wise, they generally give you pyjamas so get changed into them if you feel under—dressed.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 04/09/2024 11:41

From what I've seen of celebs and instagrammers, you should wear comfortable clothing, add a large pair of cheap sunglasses, tie your hair up and wear a baseball cap.

Seriously though, wear what you want, just wash/shower first as it'll be smell that marks you out as a peasant rather than clothes.

ButterCrackers · 04/09/2024 11:41

No one will care what you’ve wearing. You are a customer so look at the customer service you get rather than your own nails, clothes etc.

Exactly, not everyone lives in (checks google) Crystal Palace.

Very weird to assume OP lives close enough to use the same hairdressers as you.

Getonwitit · 04/09/2024 11:47

Just remember all of those you see in the media that sashaying through Heathrow having landed from LA have spent an hour getting changed before being photographed, they did not travel in those clothes.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 04/09/2024 11:49

As my grannie would say - as long as you're clean, you're fit to be seen.

Just wear whatever you would normally wear.

I'm surprised the crew let him board if he was that drunk - if someone can't even walk properly, they become a danger to other passengers in the event of an emergency.

He got wrecked on the flight. Why they didn't stop serving him I have no idea.

Worse still we were landing in the Middle East to change planes so I have no idea what the local constabulary would do with someone too drunk to stand up.

Alcohol can hit people for six when flying especially as the quality of sleep even travelling in luxury is iffy.

Frequent travellers [for business especially] will arrive on time to eat in the lounge, have a glass of bubbles on arrival on the plane and change into pjs and get their heads down as soon as the flight takes off.

Yeah I don't drink more than a glass or two even on a very long flight, and only then with food - it definitely goes to my head.

If it was a changeover in Doha or Dubai, I'm sure he'd not have been allowed to re-board his next flight. And yes very surprised they carried on serving him!

Thudercatsrule · 04/09/2024 12:07

If you can afford first class, why do you look like a hobo?!! 😂

Seriously though, no-one cares what you look like on a flight no matter the class you sit in.

Don't worry about that. Change into your pyjamas straight after take off. If BA they'll be provided if you ask even on a daytime flight. Change back just before landing.
If not BA, check online to see if provided - if not, take your own.
Drinking Champagne in bed whilst watching a film on a plane is awesome.

LadyGabriella · 04/09/2024 12:14

People who actually have money typically don’t always dress the part. Fine to go as you are.

NetZeroZealot · 04/09/2024 12:23

Nobody dresses up for First Class. It's a long haul flight, wear comfy clothes - trousers with an elasticated waist, shoes that are easy to get on and off especially if your feet swell up, an extra layer because it can get cold.
Be clean, as I'm sure you would for any journey where you are in close proximity to other people. I once had a chocolate ice cream drip on my white shirt on a flight, so now I wear dark colours. Have a nice trip.

PeachesForPeaches · 04/09/2024 12:29

Just enjoy it. No one cares how you look

IamFamousIam · 04/09/2024 12:30

Most celebs seem to wear a velour track suit and their slippers. Oh and don’t forget the shades even if it is night time.

AnonKat · 04/09/2024 12:31

I had an upgrade at the airport once and I was in leggings and a t shirt. I'd also spent the night on my friends sofa the night before. Honestly no one was dressed up! And I didn't feel underdressed.

avacadojam · 04/09/2024 12:32

Well I had my nails done. I’m actually starting to worry less the more I think about champagne it
luckily I do wash everyday so there that… don’t even own perfume so that bits safe.
