All the autumn "talk" is making me miserable.

I get it . It's supposed to be cool to have autumn as your favourite season.

But all the talk of autumn is making me feel stressed (weird I know).

Opened up a next link and it jumpers, boots shades of browns and autumn leaves. Instagram is pumpkins and decorating for autumn (who know that was a thing). Then something else and another and an another.

I'm happiest in summer and fell really sad that it's ending.

Anyone else feel the same?

They're literally doing the opposite, they're surviving, that's the whole point.

I don't feel like Summer is over yet. I know we're only 2 days in but so far September has been glorious and sunny it is officially when Autumn begins but I find it's often hot and Sunny.
Today I face timed my son and he was WFH in just shorts because it was boiling in London. It's not Autumn yet in my head it's late Summer and the garden is still in full bloom.

HeySummerWhereAreYou · 03/09/2024 22:06

People who are saying there has been no summer - do you mean because it hasn’t been over 28 degrees for a sustained period of time? I’ve had loads of days in the garden and am still wearing shorts.

Even if it’s not wall to wall sun, it doesn’t go dark at 4pm in the summer!

I hate winter and as such, autumn feels a bit like a Sunday - I’m not a big fan of those either.

Yeah @paddyclampster to be fair, this year's summer has been OK really. Could have been better but was OK, especially July and August. Not too bad at all... It's nice to have multiple weeks (say 8-10 weeks,) of brilliant sunshine and lovely heat (28-34 C,) and a few weeks of it at 35-36C to get a really long hot summer feel! (Well - nice for some that is!)

But the fact is when we DO have this kind of very hot/heatwave type weather, that is unusual. It's not meant to be like that. 21-25C is a reasonable and 'expected' temperature for the UK in summer. We are quite far north on the planet if you look!

It's not really meant to be 30-32C plus for June, July, and August! Not in the UK. But the warmer days and lighter evenings are nice, and as a pp said, so is being able to dry your washing outside. And daytrips and picnics and trips to the park and the woodlands etc, are more pleasant - on long, warm, dry, summer days (when it's around 20-25C!). Smile

Surviving but at what cost? They’re bald, they’re sad, they get blown over

I hate all the "summer lovers". All the bbqs, floaty dresses, sandals, pimms o'clock, making memories twaddle when the reality is we're cold because no-one wants to admit that they need to wear a jumper, until the sun decides to suddenly make an appearance and we are all sweating our arses off, struggling to sleep in the heat, only to be woken at 4am with the bastard sun and bird song. Not to mention hayfever induced swollen eyes, scratchy throats, runny noses. Trains with hot sweaty people crammed in them and every possible slightly green open space packed with families all desperately trying to act like they are having the best day ever with screaming children, sweaty sandwiches and wasps chasing them round the ice cream truck.

And don't get me started on the chav idiots who see it as an excuse to wear their shitty grey trackies with no top on. Like I want to see their scrawny chests and nipples in public!

And flies. You forgot the flies

Variability? Nothing variable about endless rain, grey skies and tepid weather.

We don’t really get proper seasons any more.

Tell that to my apple trees. If I have to pick up any more feckin rotten apples from the ground, or make any more endless chutneys and crumbles and juice and lug huge bags of them round to my friends...

It's It's autumn.

It's not that I particularly hate autumn, but that's it's a sign of winter and shitty wet cold depressing weather that's to come for the next 6 or 7 months 😒

frozendaisy · 03/09/2024 23:38

Yes our own interior design, if you can call it that, bores me to tears, other people's is tedious and irrelevant. And you know it is because you don't mention it in real life.

And this is a thread to whinge about all the twee claptrap. There are numerous threads salivating over blankets and leaves. This one is for those of us who find those threads insufferable. Partly because I just don't believe any of them there aren't numerous people wondering around plumping cushions and gazing longingly at copper leaves. It's a load of up itself, shallow claptrap.

Instagram and the rest has turned the human race into fake, look at me, look at what I buy and how I arrange it, I go on walks in boots and jumpers, shallow boring nonsense. And everyone else joins in trying to out cushion each other.

The average high for July and August has been 18 degrees with rain most days. We’ve even had the heating on a times when it’s been 14 during the day. I’m still waiting for summer to start! We’re in the NW.

I think people just like to out "twee" each other with talk of crunching leaves and collecting damsons or whatever it is. Sentimental claptrap.

Go read the 'blackberry' thread. Or is it only Damsons that are twee? Picked 17 pears today. Will make a twee tart.

I actually put "or whatever" to include all autumn fruit collecting.

A pear tart oh well done you how clever an interesting you are. And you collected the pears yourself wow almost like they grow on trees that we definitely don't have in our garden and if we did would we know what to do with them? Golly gosh wasted on us the fruit and nut trees we definitely don't have and others we definitely don't know where they are around the neighborhood.

Probably best we don't forage we don't have the cushions to match the tarts and pies.

Crinkle77 · 03/09/2024 23:51

Yes. Wish everyone would fuck off talking about autumn and spooky season.

Nsky62 · 04/09/2024 00:00

Love summer, I blossom, others wilt, it’s too brief in the uk

Anotherunpredictableday · 04/09/2024 00:04

I love autumn and like summer too, I like all the seasons really…but..I don’t like not being able to just be present in them! I don’t want to see Halloween things yet…there’s two months to go, let us enjoy the late summer and last part, before shoving us hastily on. I saw mince pies in my local English shop the other day, completely ridiculous!

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 04/09/2024 00:50

Autumn always feels like a fresh start, like change is in the air. I work in schools and have two school-aged children so the start of September always feels a bit, "Out with the old, in with the new," and something to be excited about. But then I think that there's something different and new about all the seasons.

ForGreyKoala · 04/09/2024 03:22

I love autumn, it's always been my favourite season. However, I am not in the UK and I imagine our autumns are nicer here - it can be warm right through to the end of the last month of it. We are in spring now, and it's already warm and I have to say I am looking forward to summer, which hopefully will be hot and dry.

OutrageousImmoral · 04/09/2024 04:30

Yes I hate this time of year. We haven’t had a proper summer yet! The nights are drawing in and everything is starting to look really sad in the garden. What’s to like?!

CalliopePlantain · 04/09/2024 06:18

I love it when it’s damp, dark and dreary out. Nothing better than a cloudy sky and the anticipation of it raining. Possibility of a big storm even better! Love wrapping up in a big coat, scarf and hat.
Autumn is like a Thursday

YeahComeOnThen · 04/09/2024 06:48

Oh good to know that Autumn being my favourite season is 'basic' & it's all down to marketing. Well, they saw me coming. 50 years of marketing 🤣🤣🤣

Autumn is my favourite season. Whether you embrace Autumn or just bitch about it doesn't change the summer we've just had. Whatever yours was like

who knew Autumn Grinching was such 'a thing' all trying to outdo their grinchiness... how very basic.

Weird and getting weirder by the post.
Collecting fruit is twee? Sentimental claptrap? Making a tart is 'clever and interesting'? Wow I'm flattered!
What is the matter with you?
Do you not like a walk through the park? No need to begrudge it to those who do. (leaves here are not turning yet)
Nothing twee about eating fruit rather than wasting it, if you have it growing it's free.
As it happens, my cushion covers are a sort of yellow-ey pear shade, but it's not obligatory. They match the lounge, and yes, I spent some time choosing how to spend my money on comfort and colours when I decorated 5 years ago.

Not only do I look longingly at copper leaves, I am guilty of carrying secateurs, and know how to use them. Add theft to my misdemeanours.
You sound a little unhappy.

Who knew that a chat about the seasons could arouse such strength of feeling 😂

Cattery · 04/09/2024 09:25

The bit I don’t get is why people become so bitter if others say they prefer cooler weather and don’t love summer? I don’t love summer. I enjoy the nights drawing in. I love the autumn and the build up to Christmas. With the best will in the world we can’t change the weather, any weather. Sometimes it’s favourable to some but not to others. Nothing we can do about it.
