All the autumn "talk" is making me miserable.

I get it . It's supposed to be cool to have autumn as your favourite season.

But all the talk of autumn is making me feel stressed (weird I know).

Opened up a next link and it jumpers, boots shades of browns and autumn leaves. Instagram is pumpkins and decorating for autumn (who know that was a thing). Then something else and another and an another.

I'm happiest in summer and fell really sad that it's ending.

Anyone else feel the same?

I don't have autism, but summer clothes just make me feel exposed. I like the weight of layers of clothing. I feel comfortable, relaxed and for want of a better word "safe" in heavier clothing and layers.

Snap! I'm autistic (diagnosed, with autistic dc) and this is exactly how I feel - down to the last word. I'd also add the dreaded word, 'cosy', to how it makes me feel...like a warm, soothing embrace. Nothing to do with marketing for me personally. In fact I don't follow marketing or trends. I just do what feels/looks good to me and is harmless.

Ditto with the poster who talked about needing to wear socks and hating when it's too warm for socks. That's me too.

Agree @HeySummerWhereAreYou Autumn is just more about thick grey cloud, rain and tepid weather, only this time the days are shorter so it’s dark by 5pm. Halloween will be a washout, Bonfire night will be a washout, Christmas will be a washout and nobody south of the Midlands will get so much as a proper frost which at least looks pretty.

We could get into ‘cosy jumper dresses and have a pumpkin spice latte’ but we will sweat buckets in 15 degrees as we squelch around in a bog while desperately pretending we’re feeling festive and dreading cleaning the mud off our boots, so it’s a no from me.

YES to this! ^ 😆

@Blueybanditbingochilli 19.20

I think it’s more that there seems to be a moral virtue to liking rainy, dull, 16 degree weather on here. As if liking hot summers makes you a basic bitch type who can’t wait to blast the garden music, jump in the sex pond and have a ‘cheeky Aperol spritz’. Whereas ‘cool’ aka rainy chilly days inspire images of sitting reading something profound in the window of a tasteful living room, glad to be alone and surrounded by equally dark and moody weather.

And yes to this also! There seems to be an odd snobbery on Mumsnet about people enjoying hot balmy weather, sitting in the garden suntanning, and getting in their pool or hot tub and getting the barbecue out. Really odd, snooty, attitudes from some!

Autumn is the bestiest, most #makingmemoriesiest season. Who doesn't love squelching through mushy leaves. If you're really lucky you can smoosh some hidden dog shit deep into the treads of your stout autumn footwear!

Ooh, I need a hot choc to recover from the excitement of thinking about it!

I usually quite enjoy the beginning of autumn, but not this year when we haven’t had a proper summer!

I agree with this and i dont even like the sunshine

Why are the woods near us busier in the summer if everyone likes autumnal walks?
Perhaps people are on holiday, or babysitting kids while parents work?

People might talk the talk about frolicking in autumn leaves but round here they don't walk the walk.
Not so much a frolic, more a pleasant stroll on a decent day. They certainly walk the walk here - dog walkers cafe, and lots of meet ups for people walking alone with their dogs. I like watching the squirrels

Do you all meet up with your IRL people and go, oh summer's coming to an end how are your preparations for autumn going? Do you think it's a bit early to put the pumpkin decorations out yet? Have you changed your scented candles over? I mean I have never in my life had a real life conversation about "preparing for autumn". Do people do this?

No, they just do it. Just like they do spring and summer - Christmas is probably a topic of conversation. People just automatically change to their warmer duvets, PJ's and put the fire on. Hunker down in the evenings - we just do it.
Will you be wearing your T shirts in the autumn leaving your curtains open in the dark? Keeping your cooler duvet on?
Is it so hard for you to understand that some people are interested in home decor - this is their thing, a hobby, they are interested in their homes, and how other people do it. They like to dress their homes. No different from your spring, summer autumn and winter plantings and garden displays. I will be getting my bulbs in soon.
People post about it on here because there is an interest, they can discuss seasonal decor. You don't have to be interested.

TooMuchOfNothingIsJustAsTough · 03/09/2024 20:34

I've never had pumpkin spice latte and never felt an urge to try it with all the marketing and youtubers flogging it. I don't like pumpkin so anything else that comes with it is of no interest to me, that includes pumpkin theme and pumpkin decorations for autumn.

I like latte though and hot chocolate, and I drink them all year round, not as an Autumn trend.

LadyGabriella · 03/09/2024 20:34

HeySummerWhereAreYou · 03/09/2024 20:18

But they're minging! 😖

Lol I quite like them. Had a pumpkin spice cookie at Starbucks today though which wasn’t very nice.

overgrowntoddler · 03/09/2024 20:35

Ha yes "autumn; it's so basic"
"Gonna grab my PLS and a chunky knit and snuggle"

I cannot bear the thought of wearing shoes either. In fact I don't have my any work (school) shoes and the students are back tomorrow (I have some doc marten shoes that are so ridiculously heavy that that I can wear if tomorrow isn't the last of sandal season.

I don't get Halloween either

I love Christmas though by November I'm excited and have come to terms with the death of summer.

January is the darkest month both literally and metaphorically. But soon picks up in February.

I’m with you, OP, this time of year makes me feel miserable, I hate the “ber” months! I even prefer January!

Oh, MY. GOD!!!!! I am so sick to death of stupid fucking memes and pics on Facebook and Twitter this past week, from people saying 'My favourite time of year, the BER months!' The fucking BER months! With a photo of a young woman walking her dog, through fallen leaves, with her woolly hat and boots, and a big coat and scarf on, and frost on the bushes. Is this 'BER MONTHS' bollocks new, because I have only seen it this year!!!

Not a go at you @WorriedMillie sorry. It just suddenly reminded me seeing your post!!!

Comedycook · 03/09/2024 20:36

I'm the same op. I love summer and think I have SAD. I get really down when the weather changes and it starts to get dark early. I don't know why everyone gets so excited about autumn...I just feel utter dread.

Can you not just disagree, without being a sarcastic arse?

Cattenberg · 03/09/2024 20:38

I hate the start of autumn. I try to make myself feel better by:

Pretending it’s still summer until 22 September.

Stocking up on non-perishable items now, so I don’t have to visit the shops much between October and early December. I really hate the long build-up to Christmas.

Trying to have something to look forward to each week, even if it’s just something small like going to the cinema.

Going to a fireworks display. I know fireworks are awful, but I secretly love them.

AgileGreenSeal · 03/09/2024 20:41

To be honest I enjoy every season, for different reasons (obvs) but this year I’m feeling a bit down about autumn coming in, as we haven’t had a summer.

So now I’m pinning my hopes on an Indian summer- was on the beach on Saturday and even went in for a swim.

Comedycook · 03/09/2024 20:41

I convince myself that all of September is summer...to be fair the weather is often mild in summer. I sunbathed in my garden today. Even October can be okish weather wise. November and December are hideous and I detest Christmas time. I like January as I feel spring is coming and the days are slowly getting longer.

What I started doing last year is sitting in my garden in the morning in the winter months with a coffee...coat on obviously! I find it helps my mental health to be outside as much as possible when it's light.

Calm down. You'll give yourself a nosebleed.

TooMuchOfNothingIsJustAsTough · 03/09/2024 20:42

My favourite season is Spring. Not only that it's the start of new life, it feels like it too. Fiinally it's going to be longer daylight again and I feel like I can breathe properly after the dark long nights of winter. I feel the cold cold air letting out a bit after the cold winter months and finally I can start to feel a bit warm without being hot (damn summer coming to ruin spring) or bitingly cold.

I love to see the flowers bloom. The daisies, daffodils and yes even dandelions ( I know they're weeds but they're my springy flowers too). They make me smile and feel my best and alive each year.

Autumn is my second favourite season but more so the beginning because it's a relief from hot summer. I don't like that it's starting to get dark early and the cold may come hard early.

Anyway, I'm done with my Spring love. Already looking forward to it next year.

gardenmusic · 03/09/2024 20:42

It's not snobbery, it's relief from the hot sweltering muggy nights and sweaty days. We have experienced 30 degrees here this summer - it was 29 on Sunday. (South Kent coast) Suntanning - that's just down right stupid!

Yalta · 03/09/2024 20:43

Autumn follows summer

I want to know what happened to Summer. I think I was working on the non rain days because I just got very wet and took a hoody with me when ever I went out.

BaBaMulticolouredSheep · 03/09/2024 20:44

I like autumn and winter (sorry!).
Not because it's trendy but because I like the peace and quiet that comes with the dark nights/rain that keeps all the neighbour noise at bay.
I sleep better because it's darker longer, I can read books better and I can watch films better.

That's not to say I don't like anything about spring/summer. I like being able to get my washing out on the line and I like the light mornings for taking the dog out when nobody else is about.

Although I do enjoy the spring flowers and the trees etc coming back to life the idea of the long, long days actually makes me feel stressed out. Too light, too noisy, too much.

I used to live somewhere quieter and I still found the long bright days stressful.

That said I am retired now so I guess it is easier to enjoy the dark mornings when I am just popping down to the kitchen to make tea and retire back to bed to read mumsnet. I did used to hate all the driving in the dark when I was out working and of course the traffic was worse in the bad weather as well.

I don't feel ready. I haven't had a break at all. And then there's Xmas to start thinking about. More bloody overwhelm.

frozendaisy · 03/09/2024 17:50

It might end up being a wet, drag limp into winter who knows?

I think people just like to out "twee" each other with talk of crunching leaves and collecting damsons or whatever it is. Sentimental claptrap.

😂😂

Whatever3787 · 03/09/2024 20:45

I love winter! I hate summer and I feel like you whenever summer is approaching I’m so happy the cooler weather and dark nights are on the way 😁

@TooMuchOfNothingIsJustAsTough DD is autistic and we can't get enough of soft, cuddly, warm blankets, hoodies, pillows for her.

She absolutely loves being wrapped up. She already sleeps under her weighted blanket since mid-August.

She needs new boots and I think it will be a struggle getting her to put her socks into the wash.
