All the autumn "talk" is making me miserable.

I get it . It's supposed to be cool to have autumn as your favourite season.

But all the talk of autumn is making me feel stressed (weird I know).

Opened up a next link and it jumpers, boots shades of browns and autumn leaves. Instagram is pumpkins and decorating for autumn (who know that was a thing). Then something else and another and an another.

I'm happiest in summer and fell really sad that it's ending.

Anyone else feel the same?

So what will you do? Autumn comes around every year

I know you weren't asking me, but I'll get anxious, and depressed and generally have a shit time.

LadyGabriella · 03/09/2024 19:39

Get a PSL at Starbucks. Autumn doesn’t have to be bad.

I hate all the "summer lovers". All the bbqs, floaty dresses, sandals, pimms o'clock, making memories twaddle when the reality is we're cold because no-one wants to admit that they need to wear a jumper, until the sun decides to suddenly make an appearance and we are all sweating our arses off, struggling to sleep in the heat, only to be woken at 4am with the bastard sun and bird song. Not to mention hayfever induced swollen eyes, scratchy throats, runny noses. Trains with hot sweaty people crammed in them and every possible slightly green open space packed with families all desperately trying to act like they are having the best day ever with screaming children, sweaty sandwiches and wasps chasing them round the ice cream truck.

And don't get me started on the chav idiots who see it as an excuse to wear their shitty grey trackies with no top on. Like I want to see their scrawny chests and nipples in public!

HÆLTHEPAIN · 03/09/2024 19:43

I say all the time on these threads that I’m a hater of heat - anything over about 22° is my limit, but even I am a bit ‘shocked’ at how quickly September has come round.

I do love autumn and winter though so I suppose it’s not too bad for me but we’ve definitely been short changed with summer this year!

frecklejuice · 03/09/2024 19:44

Autumn is my favourite but not because I want to be cool 😂 I didn't even know it was supposed to be cool.

Me and summer do not get along, I'm fair, freckly and burn in a second plus I don't do well in the heat so give me spring or Autumn anytime!

All of this!!

Everyoneesleistheproblem · 03/09/2024 19:46

DO NOT ENGAGE.

Its only autumn when it's colder darker and wetter.

Until then it's Indian summer with drinks in the pub garden, eating outside and going to France ( short breaks to blank out winter until actual autumn ). ☀️

Literally October is 4 weeks away and then it's Christmas. Bastards.
The Christmas Bargain Thread is up already. You've missed the Lush Minecraft bath bombs with free delivery..

DrCoconut · 03/09/2024 19:51

There's the germs too. The constant coughs and colds and chest infections from back to school until spring. When I'm up at the hospital with one of my DC on a nebuliser the fact that the cafe is serving festive latte is cold comfort. Everyone is so much healthier in summer.

frozendaisy · 03/09/2024 19:51

Why are the woods near us busier in the summer if everyone likes autumnal walks?

People might talk the talk about frolicking in autumn leaves but round here they don't walk the walk.

Do you all meet up with your IRL people and go, oh summer's coming to an end how are your preparations for autumn going? Do you think it's a bit early to put the pumpkin decorations out yet? Have you changed your scented candles over? I mean I have never in my life had a real life conversation about "preparing for autumn". Do people do this?

I love summer. Don't like bbqs or pimms and I'm not into "making memories twaddle".
I just prefer being warm, the garden being in bloom, the sun, the longer days and shorter nights. And I like not needing to wear socks or remember a coat 😆

It’s how I get over summer! I’ve had to get into it. What’s the alternative?

It's all an illusion and clever marketing. Applies to all seasons. Anyway, I have my bingo card ready for the Autumn lovers out there -

Cosy
Snuggle
Sofa
Fire
Candles
Fairy lights
Hot choc
Crunchy leaves
Frost
Hallowe'en
Christmas

I’m the same @overgrowntoddler
And this summer has been crap (well at least where I am) so I dint even feel like I’ve seen the summer yet. Instead we’ve had fog and frosty mornings already 😢😢

I hate it being too hot for socks. I loathe wandering round barefoot. The only allowance I make is when I'm doing my martial art and even then I try very hard not to look at anyone else's feet.

Love a good pair of socks, not too thick, not too thin and preferably with a funky design on which no one knows is there until I remove my boots.

Plus barefoot just means everyone spreading their sweaty foot jam over my floors 🤢

I have had 3 giant blankets, my cats have stolen them all.

May have to purchase number 4 this year and try to keep hold of it!

At the risk of stating the obvious, the way forward is to embrace each one as it comes around. I find that the “Nothing Much Happens” podcasts are great for this because they’re so focused on the little things in life. I stick strictly to only listening to the right ones for each month, and have found as a side effect of them that I get much less depressed by the end of summer than I used to.

Don't know about it being "cool" to like autumn but I know that both OH & I both dislike summer and relish the cooler seasons.
The long days of summer are fine but as for the heat.... You can keep it.

A bit cooler & damp this week (after a hot, sticky weekend) so we have hopped into the moho and are spending a few days having a cheeky midweek break walking in the Cotswolds.
Misty this morning but clear & sunny come sundown and having covered a good distance today, now sat outside enjoying the cool evening.
Not something we would try to do in the summer as walking and heat do not go together for us. Overcast, rain, mud...... Bring it on!😆
Ddogs the same, they wilt in the heat but can keep going when it is cooler.

Same here. I wasn't aware that it was 'cool' to like autumn. I'm just always relieved that it's not going to be hot.
Autumn 'coolness' is all marketing I suppose. I take about as little notice of that as I do about Christmas. Mad grinchy bint I am 😂

Twitchyeyebrow · 03/09/2024 20:16

I feel like this too. I get so down in winter, I hate all the autumn hype. It signals that winter is coming. 😔

I really struggle with the change from summer to autumn. I've spent months in flip flops and bare feet, shorts or dresses. Going back to boots or trainers, socks, jeans, coats etc makes me want to cry. I'm autistic and just hate the feeling of it all on me. I feel suffocated.

BluebirdBoogie · 03/09/2024 20:17

I resent Autumn because it means Summer's over.

It seems to get worse every year ☹️

Blueybanditbingochilli · 03/09/2024 19:20

I think it’s more that there seems to be a moral virtue to liking rainy, dull, 16 degree weather on here. Like liking hot summers makes you a basic bitch type who can’t wait to blast the garden music, jump in the sex pond and have a ‘cheeky Aperol spritz’. Whereas ‘cool’ aka rainy chilly days inspire images of sitting reading something profound in the window of a tasteful living room, glad to be alone and surrounded by equally dark and moody weather.

Maybe my imagination is overactive.

Not really. op is saying she thinks liking autumn is something people say because it’s cool. That’s basic. I can’t stand the term you used so will keep it as ‘Basic’, not judgment. I just don’t like that term.

In fact whilst, autumn lovers are a thing, plenty of people on Social media make fun of them and tend to assume they are ‘basic white middle class women’.

I love autumn and am working class and mixed race so not sure where I fit.

I haven’t known anyone who likes autumn talk about reading something profound. Though, again, I do read more in autumn winter. Because I spend more time being four. Outside in spring summer.

Tons of people bang on about looking forward to summer. This year it was ‘milk maid dress season’.

Some people just really like certain seasons. Some people will think that makes them cool. Most people don’t care if they come across as cool or basic. They just like what they like.

Interesting (also sympathies) I'm also autistic and I really hate being hot. We're all so different!

It must be hard with your autism.

I don't have autism, but summer clothes just make me feel exposed. I like the weight of layers of clothing. I feel comfortable, relaxed and for want of a better word "safe" in heavier clothing and layers.

reluctantbrit · 03/09/2024 20:22

Yes and no.

I do love Spring/Summer, being outside, feeling the warm on your skin, it's sunny (normally) and you hear the birds, see the flowers, have picnics.

But I do love Autumn as well, the smells, the crunch of leaves, the colours. But then comes mid-October and the dark evenings and I get really frustrated. I do have SAD and it feels like I am hit with a sledgehammer.
We once went to Quebeck the first two weeks in October, I don't think I ever saw this explosion of leaves turning and enjoying the crisp air.

So I do find joys seeing my electric candles in the window coming home, seeing the wreath on the door, knowing there is a blanket waiting for me to wrap up in. The smell of wood fire, the warmth of certain foods.

It's the knowledge that I can go and carry on until the Christmas lights appear. For me January is the worst, if I don't have a child I would schedule a holiday.
