All the autumn "talk" is making me miserable.

I get it . It's supposed to be cool to have autumn as your favourite season.

But all the talk of autumn is making me feel stressed (weird I know).

Opened up a next link and it jumpers, boots shades of browns and autumn leaves. Instagram is pumpkins and decorating for autumn (who know that was a thing). Then something else and another and an another.

I'm happiest in summer and fell really sad that it's ending.

Anyone else feel the same?

I've always genuinely loved autumn, way before all the Instagram love for it. I don't decorate for it though - just like the time of year! I like winter too. Not a fan of March to June but July and August are nice.

However - since having had a child I now see autumn and winter slightly differently. Everything is a bit easier in the summer months with a young child!

Apart from the sun cream

gardenmusic · 03/09/2024 20:49

I think people just like to out "twee" each other with talk of crunching leaves and collecting damsons or whatever it is. Sentimental claptrap.

Go read the 'blackberry' thread. Or is it only Damsons that are twee? Picked 17 pears today. Will make a twee tart.

Ha yes "autumn; it's so basic"
"Gonna grab my PLS and a chunky knit and snuggle"

I cannot bear the thought of wearing shoes either. In fact I don't have my any work (school) shoes and the students are back tomorrow (I have some doc marten shoes that are so ridiculously heavy that that I can wear if tomorrow isn't the last of sandal season.

I don't get Halloween either

I love Christmas though by November I'm excited and have come to terms with the death of summer.

January is the darkest month both literally and metaphorically. But soon picks up in February.

I don't understand why you have to be so nasty about it though, calling people "basic" and making fun of them.

I mean, some peoppe prefer autumn, some prefer summer. Some people like the cold, some people prefer it hot. That's what makes the human race wonderful, we are all so different.

But on MN it seems you have to love summer, otherwise you're some basic, dull, twee PSL loving numpty which isn't true at all.

I hate feeling hot, unless I'm sat next to a swimming pool. Hate it. I have horrific hayfever, spend most of the summer puffing inhalers and sleeping upright in an attempt to breathe.

People are just different. There is no right or wrong to which season people prefer.

Rubyandscarlett · 03/09/2024 20:52

Me too op - my whole facebook wall is adverts for Christmas shows.
Proper got the post holiday blues today.

KATHSTYLE · 03/09/2024 20:55

Well I love autumn.

I don't rate summer at all. It's either cold and rainy (disappointing) or far too hot (depleting but you feel guilty if you're not out in it - 'making the most of this lovely weather'). My husband is obsessed with barbequeing and I'm sick of it all by now. Bastard visitors coming and going - no normal routine.

I just LOVE autumn. I feel SO excited that there's a crispness in the air and the nights are start to draw in. Settling back into a normal routine. Getting excited about a new cashmere scarf and a nice new pair of jeans. Getting back into making Sunday roasts instead of sodding barbecues.

Wrong, !!
You can so see the light back in the mornings ( literally as quickly as it gets dark in August evenings). Love it, February's just rain.

Also cheap. Cheap pub, cheap restaurants, cheap holidays away, all the Sales!

Its not weird. Although I don't agree with you re Autumn, I totally get that it stresses you out and makes you down. I get like that about Christmas, panicky from mid October (not entirely unreasonable as it seems to start on 1 Nov). It seems like I'm the only one dreading it when everyone else loves it, in my circle anyhow. I'm not too keen on July or August either to be honest. I get sick of people thinking I'm being ridiculous disliking what I do, but then moaning about January and expecting me to sympathise. We all have different ways of seeing the world and different emotional reactions.

Precisely. Well said. There doesn’t have to be a right and wrong answer about season likes/dislikes! ( and I feel as you do about Christmas and summer).

Autumnismyfavouritetimeofyear · 03/09/2024 20:57

I actually hate summer - I dont know why and did not really realize it until a few years ago. I know I always felt better once September came around. On thinking about it, I realized I love Autumn and Spring but Autumn is my favourite - bring on the cozy vibes.

Comedycook · 03/09/2024 20:58

I absolutely hate winter clothes. I much prefer wearing a summer dress and flip flops. I hate feeling bundled up with layers on. I also hate boots...take so long to put on...plus need socks.

Haha. Might have been.

Drinkandthink · 03/09/2024 21:02

@lostittobostik No issues with suncream! I think my child quite likes it!

overgrowntoddler · 03/09/2024 21:03

@MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel

Sorry if it landed badly. No offence meant. Trying to make a jibe at the twee influencer culture with hyperbole.

I'm probably just bitter.

Nope, I’m happy as a pig in shit that summer is essentially overrrrrrrrrrr

benefitstaxcredithelp · 03/09/2024 21:05

I agree op.

Whilst autumn is a wonderful season, I’m in no rush to end the summer. The dark cold months will be SO long that I’m ignoring any talk of autumn yet. I’m still in shorts and will be til at least the end of September (with a big jumper or fleece if nec).

Autumnismyfavouritetimeofyear · 03/09/2024 21:10

To be fair, I cant stand influencer vibes at any time of the year!!!!! Which is why I dont follow any!

gardenmusic · 03/09/2024 20:42

And yes to this also! There seems to be an odd snobbery on Mumsnet about people enjoying hot balmy weather, sitting in the garden suntanning, and getting in their pool or hot tub and getting the barbecue out. Really odd, snooty, attitudes from some!

It's not snobbery, it's relief from the hot sweltering muggy nights and sweaty days. We have experienced 30 degrees here this summer - it was 29 on Sunday. (South Kent coast) Suntanning - that's just down right stupid!

Nonsense! The sun, and the warmth, and lighter brighter days are good for you. For so many reasons. Much better than grim, dark, grumpy, dank, dull days of Autumn and Winter, full of coldness and damp. So miserable. A bit like some of the people who love it so. 🙄 (Note I said SOME, not all!)

Have you not heard of Seasonal Affective Disorder? No-one gets that in the summer!

!

GameOfJones · 03/09/2024 21:15

I really love autumn, but I get it.... we've had a crap, washout of a summer. Normally I'm looking forward to autumn but it feels a long slog until potential hot summer days again. We've not had a BBQ all summer as it was either raining or on a couple of days.... absolutely boiling hot.

Everyoneesleistheproblem · 03/09/2024 21:24

The joys of summer;

Opening the back door at 6.30 am to let the dog out and its warm and light.
You can start the day at 7am easily not feeling stressed because it's light. And not cold.
You can do 3 loads if washing and it will dry on the line. And smell of dried air not musty.
You can go out for food early evening and the kids are happy until it gets dark...hours.
if you leave the windows open it's not cold.
No clothes need dry cleaning
No summer clothes need cost more than flip flops.
Theres edible stuff growing everywhere even if it's just nicking rosemary or bay leaves from the neighbours
We wear SUMMER bikini ( covers a bit ), t shirt (maybe) shorts ( negotiable) - two minutes tops to pull on.
AuTUMN - bra ( wire poking through, colour, can you see it) pants, tights ( holes, right shade, right size ), skirt ( right length) long sieved top ( right thickness) jumper ( right thickness) , coat ( hood, warmth) scarf ( coolness size cashmere) , gloves, hat..

And no issues making a dinner reservation in a restaurant with a lovely cocktail list.
I don't mind people doing dry January or Veganaury. More space for me.

All I see is trees dying off for the winter.

That's not what's happening really though. The trees absorb the food and energy they've made during the summer from the leaves, and store it for the winter. Hence the leaves drop. It's fascinating and beautiful :)

paddyclampster · 03/09/2024 21:47

People who are saying there has been no summer - do you mean because it hasn’t been over 28 degrees for a sustained period of time? I’ve had loads of days in the garden and am still wearing shorts.

Even if it’s not wall to wall sun, it doesn’t go dark at 4pm in the summer!

I hate winter and as such, autumn feels a bit like a Sunday - I’m not a big fan of those either

I'm with you, OP.

I convince myself that all of September is summer

But it IS summer for all of September! Sometimes there is even a little summery thing going on in October ... sort of. It's November when things start to get nasty.

I'm feeling rather tragic because I've moved from a place where the open-air pool is open all year round to a place where the open-air pool closes at the end of this month. October 1st is now Doomsday in my world.

Yeah September is usually nice too. Lovely so far!

Although it is only the 3rd! Grin
