All the autumn "talk" is making me miserable.

I get it . It's supposed to be cool to have autumn as your favourite season.

But all the talk of autumn is making me feel stressed (weird I know).

Opened up a next link and it jumpers, boots shades of browns and autumn leaves. Instagram is pumpkins and decorating for autumn (who know that was a thing). Then something else and another and an another.

I'm happiest in summer and fell really sad that it's ending.

Anyone else feel the same?

It might end up being a wet, drag limp into winter who knows?

I think people just like to out "twee" each other with talk of crunching leaves and collecting damsons or whatever it is. Sentimental claptrap.

We have a damson tree and I've just finished making lots of jam and damson gin. But not twee, just delicious!

Thanks everyone these comments are really helpful.

Infeel a bit better.

It's all an illusion and clever marketing. Applies to all seasons. Anyway, I have my bingo card ready for the Autumn lovers out there -
Cosy
Snuggle
Sofa
Fire
Candles
Fairy lights
Hot choc
Crunchy leaves
Frost
Hallowe'en
Christmas

Bingo! I will have all of them and love every minute. No illusion here. (Hot choc most of the year) Live next to the sea and a park (crunchy leaves, lovely walks), my scented candles will change from fresh to autumnal. The house will be cosy (need to, north facing) I sit on my sofa all year, it's not reserved for the darker months. Of course I will light the fire (gas driftwood) don't need it in the summer.
It is quite snuggly being warm and dry with the rain lashing against the windows and the wind howling. Hope I get a bit of frost on my trees.
Has this autumnal comfort not happened since we started living in houses? I don't put it down to marketing.

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 03/09/2024 19:05

I'm with you, OP. I hate the autumn talk and the adverts. Hate it!

StuntAcorn · 03/09/2024 19:05

Me too @overgrowntoddler , me too.
Feels like I'm still waiting for a proper summer - am not looking forward the evenings getting darker so soon 😓

So what will you do? Autumn comes around every year

SwiftiesVSLestat · 03/09/2024 19:13

I am a bit confused. You can are sad summer is over, but annoyed that some people look forward to Autumn?

So you can like summer but people who like autumn are doing it to be ‘cool’?

I don’t see what the difference is. Of course companies will be advertising their autumn things, especially clothes companies. Autumn starts in a a few weeks.

I like autumn and spring. I think it’s when there seems to be the biggest difference in weather and plants and nature. I like the change. I love sorting the garden in spring and watching things start to grow again. But I couldn’t imagine being annoyed because other people like winter or summer. Or that company’s were using the seasons to advertise.

We all have preferences. I am sorry you find the end of summer sad. It’s crap when anything makes someone sad, even if it’s a tad unreasonable.

Nourishinghandcream · 03/09/2024 19:14

Don't know about it being "cool" to like autumn but I know that both OH & I both dislike summer and relish the cooler seasons.
The long days of summer are fine but as for the heat.... You can keep it.

A bit cooler & damp this week (after a hot, sticky weekend) so we have hopped into the moho and are spending a few days having a cheeky midweek break walking in the Cotswolds.
Misty this morning but clear & sunny come sundown and having covered a good distance today, now sat outside enjoying the cool evening.
Not something we would try to do in the summer as walking and heat do not go together for us. Overcast, rain, mud...... Bring it on!😆
Ddogs the same, they wilt in the heat but can keep going when it is cooler.

All the seasons are ‘cooler seasons’. Rarely goes above 24 even in the height of summer. You’re very much in luck.

I’m with you, OP, this time of year makes me feel miserable, I hate the “ber” months! I even prefer January!

Yes, this.
I don't know if it's a thing, but Spring especially always made me anxious and down.
Since childhood.

I think it’s more that there seems to be a moral virtue to liking rainy, dull, 16 degree weather on here. Like liking hot summers makes you a basic bitch type who can’t wait to blast the garden music, jump in the sex pond and have a ‘cheeky Aperol spritz’. Whereas ‘cool’ aka rainy chilly days inspire images of sitting reading something profound in the window of a tasteful living room, glad to be alone and surrounded by equally dark and moody weather.

Maybe my imagination is overactive.

pumpkinspiceisnotnice · 03/09/2024 19:20

100% with you OP! I hate the cosiness, hate snuggling under faux fur throws, all the talk of steaming mugs of hot chocolate and marshmallows! Walking and kicking orange leaves. Someone recently posted asking what autumn decorations people have. WTF? I hate anything and everything pumpkin as well! See my username - pumpkin spice drinks are disgusting.

It's all just depressing and gloomy to me.

BogRollBOGOF · 03/09/2024 19:22

Autumn is the bestiest, most #makingmemoriesiest season. Who doesn't love squelching through mushy leaves. If you're really lucky you can smoosh some hidden dog shit deep into the treads of your stout autumn footwear!

Ooh, I need a hot choc to recover from the excitement of thinking about it!

Mrsdyna · 03/09/2024 19:26

Surely you know that people talking about it doesn't change the season, so I'm really confused how it's making you feel so stressed.

DrCoconut · 03/09/2024 19:26

I also hate autumn and winter. It's already getting dark too early for my liking, we're having to come back from the park early and there's months of it to come. I think a proper summer would make it easier to cope with but there hasn't been a really glorious one for years for those not in the south east. Last year was a total washout, this year too. It was supposed to be nice at the weekend but no, grey and rain and cancelled plans 😫 I'm feeling anxious about the whole thing now.

I hate summer mainly as i feel ill in the heat with migraines - I am very happy to be welcoming colder days!

Yeah I hate it. All the nonsense about frolicking through the woods kicking fallen leaves about, cups of hot chocolate and pumpkin spice latte, mugs of hot soup, snuggles on the sofa, crisp walks (whatever the fuck that is!,) dark cosy nights, big woolly jumpers, cosy thick socks, mulled wine, cosy cosy cosy! Hmm

Truth is, we're about to enter a dark, dank, wet, miserable time of the year where there's nowhere to go and nothing to do, and it's cold and frosty. Also, it's dark just after the kids come from school, the energy bills are higher, and you spend half of the next 6 months shivering!

itsmabeline · 03/09/2024 19:31

Blueybanditbingochilli · 03/09/2024 18:23

In the same way everyone imagines a ‘hot girl summer’ they’re imagining a ‘crispy leaves, jumper dress and boots autumn’.

Reality is it’ll piss with rain and be 15 degrees until June, when it will piss with rain and be 17 degrees.

😂 this.

MaidOfSteel · 03/09/2024 19:34

I've never liked autumn & winter, but these last few years have been even worse than usual. I just long for spring and summer. In my part of Scotland we haven't had any summer at all this year; not one single day with wall to wall, warm sunshine. I'm keeping everything crossed for a good spell this month, but the already shorter days are getting me down.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 03/09/2024 19:34

Autumn is my favourite season. It's not crazy cold, usually a few mild days. My clothing style is jeans, jumpers and boots so perfect for autumn. I prefer the nights darker, but the mornings are not quite pitch black yet, and I enjoy sitting indoors listening to the rain.

On the other hand, I loathe with a passion pumpkin, halloween, hot chocolate and candles 😆

I will confess to LOVING Christmas though.

Plotatoes · 03/09/2024 19:37

Ha, I completely understand what you mean about it being cool to love autumn. If you follow influencers, it's definitely a thing. I think it makes more sense in the US where in many places autumn weather is like a lovely summers day here, with some nice yellow leaves on the trees! British wind and rain are not really the vibe.

devildeepbluesea · 03/09/2024 19:37

I loathe autumn. The best bit of the year over, 6 months before things start to look up. If I could I’d fuck off to warmer climes.

Agree. I like the idea of autumn but like most things, the reality is shit.

It’s just more thick grey cloud, rain and tepid weather, only this time the days are shorter so it’s dark by 5pm. Halloween will be a washout, Bonfire night will be a washout, Christmas will be a washout and nobody south of the Midlands will get so much as a proper frost which at least looks pretty.

We could get into ‘cosy jumper dresses and have a pumpkin spice latte’ but we will sweat buckets in 15 degrees as we squelch around in a bog while desperately pretending we’re feeling festive and dreading cleaning the mud off our boots, so it’s a no from me.
