The idea of this thread is for it to be a bit of a Self Care/Self Improvement thread. So we list anything, however mundane, we think would make us our best selves. The type of things we know we should do or already do or have done with the idea of making them the norm for you. Hope that makes sense.

I'll start very basic.

... who drinks 3L of water a day
... who keeps a 2 mo the hair appointment
... who gets enough sleep every night

I did say mundane! Will be interested to hear others' ideas to add to my plan to Self improve!

I'd like to lose weight
Stop eating so much sweet stuff (see above)

bluebellseeds · 01/09/2024 16:27

keeps a tidier house

invisiblecat · 01/09/2024 16:29

who isn't scared of the dentist and puts off going for as long as possible.

MysweetAudrina · 01/09/2024 16:29

...responds as opposed to reacts
.... shows unconditional love regardless of the situation
.....is present in the moment
......leaves others feeling better after any engagement with them
.....gives time and energy to those who care and are there for me
.....continues to grow and learn and heal

I love this idea, I have long been thinking about making 1 September 2024 the day from which I start to make more positive changes.

So mine are:

  • Lose 24kg (horrible peri menopause has turned me into a moose)
  • Commit to daily meditations (am starting a Dr Joe Dispenza book today)
  • Increase my daily physical activity rate (I did a seven mile walk last weekend and did three miles on Friday, but need to do more regularly)

There are probably loads more I could think of, but I think starting with these will help me to establish healthier mind and body routines to start with at any rate.

Thanks for starting this thread, it is just what I needed today actually!

Good luck to everyone with their goals. 👏

QueenMummyTheFirst · 01/09/2024 16:33

I've always wanted to be quiet, calm, and quick witted, like Elizabeth Bennet in P&P. Unfortunately I'm more like Mrs Bennet.

I would also like to be tidier, and less lazy.

UmbrellaEllaEllaElla · 01/09/2024 16:33

Doesn't compare herself to others

Doesn't beat herself up over mistakes

mikado1 · 01/09/2024 16:46

Ah they are really great and some thought provoking ones in there. Glad others have thought similarly. You know when you think of a habit or an act and think I should do that too or I need to do that every day. It's about naming what the acts we can do to bring about the life we want to live/the person we want to be. From the tiny to the larger.
.... flosses daily
....cleanses and moisturises early in the evening
...lays out tomorrow's clothes each night
...is active in some way daily

The more detailed and measurable the better so we can set definite intentions.

Re: flossing daily. I struggle with this but my dentist suggested doing it after lunch instead of dinner. (It's better after dinner but if you're not going to do it.....)

VioletIndigoBlueGreen · 01/09/2024 16:51

This is a great idea and I've actually started journaling about this today (am aware how wanky that sounds).

I'd like to be the kind of person who is kinder to herself.
I'd like to be the kind of person that people describe as "capable", which in my head echoes what a PP mentioned about more Elizabeth Bennett and less Mrs Bennett. No flapping, just getting on with what's needed.

Love this idea for a thread and 1 Sept is exactly the right day!

VioletIndigoBlueGreen · 01/09/2024 16:52

It was @QueenMummyTheFirst that I was trying to agree with, and I see I also need to be the kind of person who can spell Bennet!

wotsitallfor · 01/09/2024 16:57

I want stop being so tired all the time. I want to shower and eat breakfast every day.

I also need to sort out my health and fitness and declutter my house.

I want to be the sort of person who does a Joe wicks/ yoga / HIIT as soon as the DC leave for school before starting work.

At lunch I want to go for a walk or swim.

And then in the afternoon declutter and tidy.

InWithPeaceOutWithStress · 01/09/2024 16:58

…can do 20 push ups and 10 pull ups.
…goes to bed at a sensible time every night (rather than accidentally getting sucked into scrolling on Mumsnet on my phone).

Sago1 · 01/09/2024 16:59

I want to be the sort of person that can say NO and not feel guilty b

Oh yes, a proper nighttime regime for my skin too… in the morning I am much better, at night I am knackered and just don’t take the time because my bed beckons…

I have a few more:

  • Start a savings account for my holiday next year - I haven’t been away in forever and now I’ve been invited to California, so starting saving now would go a long way to making that a holiday to remember
  • Start volunteering - I work for a charity so I am very involved in that world but because I travel with the job it’s hard to commit to a set number of hours a week in any one place, but I think I have found something that would suit me down to the ground, I just haven’t done it yet… but now I am going to apply online, TODAY.

Thanks @mikado1 - I really needed that gentle boot up the bum to do the application. No time like the present!

Heatherbell1978 · 01/09/2024 17:04

I'm in a rut health wise. I'd like to run 3/4 times a week, eat well and feel better mentally. I know exactly what I need to do (I was into fitness and healthy eating pre-kids). I just can't motivate myself to start.

needhelpwiththisplease · 01/09/2024 17:08

I want to be the type of person that
Does yoga or stretching in the morning
Walks for at least an hour a day
Eats nutritional healthy foods
Regular spray tans

The wankier the better 😆

I'm sitting here with my weekly diary and I'm going to write in the activities for the week, the meal plan and maybe jot some of these intentions down to tick each day so I'm really making the effort rather than a general 'be more organised'- which I really need to be!

wotsitallfor I started decluttering maybe 2/3 weeks ago and I'm not joking I already feel happier and lighter, come join the FlyLady thread. I might only do a drawer some days but have sorted a lot already in that time.
...makes weekly to-do list
...does weekly meal plan
...makes daily to-do of the immediate tasks (call the plumber etc)

WheresMySupportCat · 01/09/2024 17:32

Great idea for a thread. Smile

I wish to swap out drinking wine every night for sparkling water.

And to keep on top of hair cuts and colours.

Today I put together a charity shop bag of clean clothes that have never fitted me or that feel uncomfortable and I started writing a list of clothes I wish to buy. It includes a nice soft cashmere cardigan- a decent non-supermarket pair of jeans and a soft long sleeved tshirt. It's a start.

mikado1 · 01/09/2024 17:36

I've already made my a/W purchases but those items sound fab 👌

You should all download one of the free habit tracker apps . They have really helped me reach my goals in the past. Need a bit of help with a few things at the moment so have just downloaded a new tracker app and have inputted up to now:

1- drink water ( not inputted the amount yet as I need to figure out a challenging yet achievable amount) . I will add cordial as I hate water.
2- read my book for at least 15 mins per day.
3- Stick to my 3 fitness classes a week.

  1. Do my couch to 5k three times per week.
  2. Consume my 5 portions of fruit and veg per day.
  3. 10k steps. I used to do approx 17k steps a day but since I've started working from home I'm really struggling with this. I bought a walking/running pad to support with this and this is also what I do my couch to 5k on.
  4. No more than one night of alcohol a week.

All of these things make me much happier meaning that my family get the best version of me .

If I only stick to 70% of this then it's 70% more than I would have done without the tracker!

My diary is my tracker, I like writing the list and ticking it off!
