What does decorating for autumn entail? I've never heard of such a thing.
Is it a new thing that some Instagram "influencers" do?

Edited

Never heard of this. What do you actually do?

Icanttakethisanymore · 02/09/2024 19:27

Imagine having a to-do list so short that ‘decorate for autumn’ was at the top of it! 😂

RainintheDesert · 02/09/2024 19:28

I decorate for Hallowee'en, the usual tacky stuff, because DD likes it, but they come down the day after. This year's star purchase is a pumpkin tablecloth from John Lewis.

lilkitten · 02/09/2024 19:29

If I were rich I'd probably change the decor with the seasons, but I don't know anyone who does. I'll put out a few Halloween bits on actual Halloween for one day.

People often have lots of things on their to do list but do the things they like first or instead.

From your comment, presumably you have a long to do list and yet here you are on mumsnet.

BeachKitten · 02/09/2024 19:33

aww I decorate. Makes me feel better coming in the house. I don’t do loads I just change my faux flowers on the console (look at the Suffolk nest and you’ll see the seasonal styles) and the botanical candle.
I’ll probs do mine next weekend.

I’ve got a baby attached to my nipple since you’re so interested - makes doing jobs tricky 🙄

When I was growing up I remember my mum used to change the curtains and cushions in the lounge at the end of September. She had light floral ones for the summer and heavy, burgundy velvet ones for the winter.

Personally I'd probably do it around the Autumn equinox or 1st October.

I love the look of all the autumnal decor in the shops but we don't need anymore clutter in our house!!

Summer and winter curtains were much more of a Thing in the days before central heating and double glazing were common. Thick, heavy curtains would be a godsend for anyone in a cold house with single glazing.

Plus, many people used to spring clean, inc. washing/dry cleaning curtains, because of the dust from coal fires.

Not sure why everyone is acting so shocked haha. When all the childrens winter things come down from the loft I also bring down the warm sofa throws/bedding and other 'seasonal bits' that definitely have an autumn feel. I have added bits and pieces to it all over the 20 years I've had my own home and I love to do it. I remember my mum doing similar. Neither of us are 'influencers'
In response to the question this normally happens some point mid Sep when I can be bothered or when it gets colder.
I also SHOCK HORROR put bits and pieces out for Halloween around 1st Oct because it makes me and my children happy 🤷‍♀️

edgeoffreedom · 02/09/2024 20:05

I've still got my Easter wreath up...i Will probably swap that for the Xmas one at the beginning of December, I tend to skip redecorating my house in-between those 2 holidays by the looks of it!

TheyComeInTwos · 02/09/2024 20:05

We put our autumn things out yesterday. It's been very cold here so it feels like autumn. In years that it's been warmer, we've done it a bit later.

TheMamaLife · 02/09/2024 20:25

i bet everyone does this to a small extent at least without realising.. it’s essentially putting your summer bits away and bringing out the warmer duvets, throws, etc along with the winter coats.

I’d say do it after the first autumnal feeling day… (like today in London)…

I might pick up this tradition with my own kids.. seems lovely.

I have been carefully cutting out paper leaves and moulding papier mache pumpkins since June, I do this to fill my time as I have no real interests, friends or hobbies🙄

Obviously, as here you are on Mumsnet sneering.

I have some lovely autumn leaf fairy lights I bring out each year to put around the fireplace and then I place some pumpkin spice candles and various autumn squashes/pumpkins by the hearth. After Halloween I use ALL the pumpkins in various recipes.

Those of you who are stunned that ‘this is a thing’ have you never seen a church decorated for the harvest festival? It’s a good thing to be in touch with nature and the seasons. I’m guessing the snobs posters who are feigning ignorance are more horrified that people actually shop in B & M or Home Bargains, the horror 😱

In answer to your question OP, I will probably do mine at the beginning of October but that’s because summer is still in full swing here in the SE. If where you are is miserable then what are you waiting for…..?

ColdWaterDipper · 02/09/2024 21:00

Never.

However, September still feels very summery where I live (Cornwall) so if I did decorate my house for different seasons I would probably do it some time in October when the weather started changing.

Great. No doubt without a thought for the many ways in which the additional consumerism is horrific for the environment

Lol. I think your carbon footprint would be less without your new car, your trip to Antarctica and your beauty advent calendar....that took me 1 minute on AS. I'm guessing there's a lot more. 🤡

I changed my 10-year-old diesel vehicle for a new hybrid which I expect to still be driving in 14/15 years. My trip to Antartica an expedition cruise on an electric powered ship and buying a beauty advent calender is only a thing when I actually need (cruelty free) skin and hair products. Hence I didn’t buy one last year because I had stuff left from the year before. So, try again! I am not saying that I live a totally none polluting life in the woods, but I am mindful. Buying seasonal tat is just bloody selfish and irresponsible!

LilBowWow · 02/09/2024 21:46

I’m being mindful by not having a car, not going on holiday and not wearing make up. Surely I’m allowed a little (reusable) tat?

Someone else would think it's selfish to go to Antarctica, buy a new car or buy beauty products. People justify different things to themselves just like you are doing. In my opinion, anyone who goes to Antarctica is disgusting. You're a hypocrite and you've been caught out for it by @BackInTheBay

Lwrenn · 02/09/2024 21:52

This thread has truly highlighted to me why my real life pals use tattle 😂

frecklejuice · 02/09/2024 21:57

Fuck me there are some miserable, sneery people on here. If you don’t have any decent input on the post why bother writing anything?

Op I love autumn, it’s my favourite season. I don’t go too mad but I change the (fake) flowers on the kitchen table from spring/summer to a nice little autumnal display from Next and I also have an autumn garland to go over the fireplace which will stay until the Christmas one goes up. Pumpkins will be displayed near the fire from October because my 10 year old is obsessed and dies at least one a week! It just makes everything feel nice and cosy instead of miserable.

I don’t think my fake flowers and some autumn bits from Asda are going to bring the planet to its knees 🙄

Fimbledore · 02/09/2024 22:04

Lwrenn · 01/09/2024 20:14

I hope your days to come bring you endless joy and things such as cosying up your home bring that!

I'm a person who grew up with absolutely fuck all but chaos, I'm a person who's never earned more than national minimum wage and I don't have a family rich in traditions. (That arent lengthy prisons stays and drug and alcohol addictions anyway 😂) So I made my own for my kids. We don't get to travel, so we learn about the world by cooking foods from different places and learning about things eaten at different celebrations. (Besides my autistic son who believes trying a chip without ketchup makes his palette diverse!)
Eg, we make a fuss for the day of the dead and watch coco after a chilli and churros.
I like that during colder months my old slow cooker is full of hot chocolate and some old jars have marshmallows or malterasers in them and the kids can help themselves.
It's nice that it looks cosy and there are some felt pumpkins dotted about etc, I enjoy it.
My kids enjoy it. It's the home I'd have loved growing up, it's not harming anyone. If people are chucking away perfectly good decor after one season then that would be an issue but I don't know anyone who would do that?
I think this thread (not because of the op!) Is just a superiority flex from people who perhaps can afford to invest in quality things should they wish, airing their distaste at plebs who shop at affordable shops. If this thread was "autumn homewares from John lewis" we'd have had a very different thread.

The being so falsley perplexed or little jibes about people having more money than they have, when it's obviously a something people who are a bit skint and do want a bit of cheer do more is very telling what posters think about lower earners.

It's absolutely wonderful to care about the environment, I even do myself but it's not okay to judge people on a budget wanting some joy or assume theyre exploited by social media telling them they need to have an influencer style home, I'm perfectly capable of deciding what to put in my house and what not, I'm poor, not a dickhead. 😂

👏👏👏

Did you swim to Antarctica? Electric boat all the way? Get a grip.

I fear your autumnal floral display has just melted an ice cap.

Actually I adore fake plants and flowers, I can't have real ones (sadly, I do prefer real) in my house because one of my children will try and eat the leaves or soil. Yet if I was to offer him lettuce leaves he'd possibly try to contact childline and report me for cruelty. 😂

Without my fake flowers I'd feel a bit flat, I love greenery. I tried dried flowers but he liked the texture of them and ate them as well. Again, won't eat a bloody quaver 😂

(He doesn't eat my pinecones, acorns or Holly from the garden, just plants and bunches of flowers, especially roses)

Well I walked some leaves into the hallway as it was raining, so I guess I must have started autumn decor without realising.
