Women are banned from talking in public

Washingupdone · 26/08/2024 13:13

Women through new laws issued by Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers, are now banned on speaking in public as a woman's voice is considered "intimate" and should not be heard. I feel so sad and helpless for their situation. At least I am educated and in this situation would try to limit birth control without my husband being aware of my actions, if I could.
Does anyone know how they can be helped?

It's sad, but it's their culture. We have little choice other than to let them get on with it.

Bollocks. That's just an excuse for not caring because they're foreign.

I agree that these women deserve protection from harm but what the PP is saying is it is inherently part of their culture that women are oppressed and abused, so it's not a straightforward situation. Obviously within the UK we can prosecute any men who behave like this but looking in on another cou Tey although abhorrent there is little we can do or expect to be done. It's almost like meddling with a different species the culture is so far removed.

They are human. I can't believe I have to say that.

Fucking hell.

Of course something can be done. There have been several suggestions on this thread alone.

Exactly unless the Afghan men themselves rise up here in Europe & demand change using every diplomatic tool at their disposal (& yes the West will help) nothing will be done. The cultural change needs to come from within.
There are millions of young Afghan men here in Europe who have the power to really advocate, put the spotlight firmly on the physical & mental torture their female counterparts are enduring & activily work together with the west to change Afghan society for women.
But I reiterate the Afghan men need to want human rights for women, equality for women, education for women, healthcare for women & freedom of clothing choice... Then the world can help but the buck ultimately stops with Afghani men, they are getting off the hook very lightly.

toadinthebucket · 27/08/2024 21:07

Fuck me, what have i just read?

Bee in your bonnet about Afghani men much?

PeasfullPerson · 27/08/2024 21:10

I feel deeply ashamed by the way the people of Afghanistan were used and then deserted.

It is unimaginable to me that women should be so discriminated against that they can’t even speak in public. It makes me wonder, has this law come about because the women of Afghanistan talk about things that some men don’t like? Because they have ideas and are not as quiet as they would like them to be.

Is this what terrorism as an outcome of extreme misogyny looks like? Fear and control wrapped up in a warped ideology that has very little to do with religion or morality.

Excuse me? Bee in my bonnet? These men are in Europe as they say they are fleeing persecution & the Taliban regieme.
Why have they deserted the women who need a male chaperone to actually walk out their front door?
Now that the Taliban have decreed that women cannot speak or use their voice outside Afghan men are needed in their home country more than ever to advocate for the women left behind!!!
What is it about the situation you don't understand?

What exactly do you expect these men to do? The Taliban are a bunch of sadistic psychos who don't tolerate dissent. They are very well equipped as the US gifted them loads of weaponry.

Blingu · 27/08/2024 21:30

The is too much othering here of Afghan men on this thread. It is very true that you get men are more mobile but naive to suggest it would benefit family back home to be a vocal opposition to the taliban. The society has collapsed and poverty and fear bring huge limitations. Plenty of men have had to leave because it is not safe for them to stay. I am in no place to judge how they can best support their wider families.
That isn’t to say that there are men and refugees who have abhorrent views on women but there are many who don’t. I have heard the most dreadful stories from men and women devastated by what their country is and what has happened to them.

VOTENONOO · 27/08/2024 21:33

I would expect when they come to Europe they actively advocate for the women abandoned back in Afghanistan who cannot leave their homes without a male chaperone.. the women who cannot speak in public.
Get involved with human rights groups on behalf of the Afghani women ... Use every interpreter, translator, ngo & politician at their disposal to lobby for Afghani womens human rights.
As I said above the pen is mightier than the sword, they are safe here in Europe, they can get online create petitions, blogs anything to raise awareness.

Exactly the Taliban would be extremely difficult to unsurp as the weaponry left behind was unbelievable they are extremely well equipped.

Yes it is immense

Also no one wants to go back in now. Losing more lives

I don't think the Taliban could succeed if half the population were opposed, so are men complicit?

Thevelvelletes · 27/08/2024 22:32

Perhaps so and if women are bearing the brunt of the Taliban's nutty ideas and laws the men for the most part aren't subjected to the same treatment.

VOTENONOO · 27/08/2024 22:34

It needs to be an inside job. The Afghan men in every village, town & city need to rise up, be the voice of their female counterparts & put a stop to this utter inhumanity. The men are the key.
I think for the men who have left there is no going back. But there is lots they can do here in the safety of the west & we can help them. But we cannot change their society, that comes from within. The women are utterly powerless so it is up to the men to overpower the regime.

cupcaske123 · 27/08/2024 22:40

So the men of Afghanistan are meant to take on an army of well equipped extremists with their bare hands? If they don't, they're complicit.🤔

No chance

You have nothing to back up your western viewpoint and how indoctrinated people are by religious ideology

Even with your emoji overuse

What are you talking about? You're making no sense. I said that the men of Afghanistan cannot beat the Taliban with their bare hands.

You are saying that that's a 'Western viewpoint'. What do you mean?

No they probably can't beat the Taliban physically.. but the millions of Afghan men within Europe can rise up & speak out within the safety of European borders.
Afghan men in every country within Europe can set up petitions, protests, marches, set up non profits, blogs, websites advocating for women's rights.
Remember these men are in Europe because they are fleeing the Taliban. They can turn the international spotlight on Afghanistan, with the eyes & pressure of the globe on the Taliban they just might relent..
It's better than doing absolute jackshit.

You're going to have to spell it out for me. Are you suggesting that the unarmed men of Afghanistan who are currently under an oppressive authoritarian regime, could overpower the Taliban if they felt like it?
