It's horrible, and really worrying as Germany has really learned from ww2 and clamped down on hate speech/actions. I hope the city is able to recover from this.

A 15 year old suspect has been arrested.

15 is still a child.

How the hell has a child got to the point where cutting people’s throats looks like a good idea?

15 year olds are challenging at the best of times. I wonder if this was a young man who subscribed to incel thinking, it's so dangerous and classed as terrorism in most of the world.

MaSaladeEstEnorme · 24/08/2024 15:31

He's not the suspect though. He was arrested for having prior knowledge of the attack and not reporting it. Allegedly overheard discussing it.

When will people stop killing each other? Never. We've always done it, always will. Chimps kill each other too.

Humans are alarmingly like Chimpanzees.
Chimps are violent.

Seems Humans as a species are territorial and tribal - and have been for thousands of years.

Visited a hill fort recently ( Worlebury Camp ) and it was built to keep invaders out- Skeletons found in excavations showed they took no prisoners.

Walking on that same ground 2000 yrs later, humans are still fundamentally the same. Under the veneer of being ā€œ Civilisedā€.

Wondering if more are planned, especially with Oktoberfest coming up

What is going on ? The 17 nearly 18 year old that attacked those poor children in the UK, the teenagers arrested over the planned attacks at the Vienna Taylor swift concerts and now this a 15 year old ? What is going so wrong that teenagers are this disturbed?

The Internet.

It's a wild west of extremism on all sides, and far too many children are left unsupervised and completely at its desensitising mercy.

Too many parents appear incapable of protecting children from this threat. It's time for governments to step in.

hurlyburlywhirly · 24/08/2024 16:00

We are in a big city today where there is a diversity celebration going on.

I've seen a number of people around town today (both male and female) who are clearly very disturbed and were yelling out hate messages to nobody in particular, about the racial group to which I belong. You really would not want any of them to be in possession of a weapon.

I said to dh that I just don't know what the answer is here. We saw a lady trip and fall yesterday and numerous people rushed to help her, us included. You see someone yelling and in mental distress and it just doesn't feel a wise or safe idea to approach and see if they're ok.

It's a mental health crisis out there on a scale that we aren't equipped to deal with.

Devonshiregal · 24/08/2024 16:03

Janesygal · 24/08/2024 00:13

But the celebration is to celebrate 650 years of the city. I was taking this at face value, I don't know why diversity is being brought into it by the media, it feels slightly inflammatory. I am glad it's being treated as terrorism & not a "one off lone wolf" attack.

I don’t even get what the difference is? Like if someone did something like this in the name of…Barbie, for instance…would this be terror or extremism? Why is it only associated with different religious groups? And if the religion doesn’t claim that person, is it then a lone wolf? Or can they self identify into it? And surely it’s terrorism when it’s women too (or little girl…)

here’s something I found online but still confused.

Terrorism and Extremism
Terrorism and extremism are sometimes used interchangeably. Both pose a threat to students but they have very distinct definitions.
Terrorism is an action or threat designed to influence the government or intimidate the public. Its purpose is to advance a political, religious or ideological cause. The current UK definition of terrorism is given in the Terrorism Act 2006.
In the UK we define terrorism as a violent action that:
Endangers a person’s life, other than that of the person committing the action
Involves serious violence against a person
Causes serious damage to property
Creates a serious risk to the public’s health and safety
Interferes with or seriously disrupts an electronic system
How does terrorism differ from extremism
On 14 March 2024 the government announced a new definition of extremism that says:
ā€œExtremism is the promotion or advancement of an ideology based on violence, hatred or intolerance, that aims to:
(1) negate or destroy the fundamental rights and freedoms of others; or
(2) undermine, overturn or replace the UK’s system of liberal parliamentary democracy and democratic rights; or
(3) intentionally create a permissive environment for others t

Government strengthens approach to counter extremism

Which means he implicitly agreed with it.

So, still remains horrifying that a 15 year old child thought cutting people’s throats was a good idea.

HelloMiss · 24/08/2024 16:26

Maybe he's gone to police himself

How else would police have found him?

Dymaxion · 24/08/2024 16:47

It sounds as though the 15yr old was overhead speaking to someone else and whatever they said made the Police believe he had prior knowledge about the attack.

People had gathered for the Festival of Diversity which started on Friday to mark the 650th anniversary of the 160,000-strong city

As it is capitalised, the phrase 'Festival of Diversity' is presumably the actual title.

Hard to tell without googling, since all German nouns are capitalised.
