For me, it's a combination of accent, subtle, expensive haircut & highlights or that perfect shade of blonde..

Oxbridge colleges aren’t chosen through family lineage any more (although it’s still a posh white men university, as the candidates for the Chancellor’s Election show).

Posh public schools cherrypick the easiest colleges and subjects: colleges that were previously women-only, or have very limited accommodation (rent of £2000 in the town is nothing if you’re used to school fees); and over-catered subjects such as Greats.

FIL is worth a few Million - you'd never suspect it to look at him.

Me and DH are very comfortable. I still shop on Ebay for clothes and shop at Aldi. But our holidays would give us away, I guess. But to look at? No, we definitely don't look rich.

IME posh / rich people are quite scruffy - they don't have anything to prove!

It’s all brushed backwards, as if it was going to be tied up.

Mine just will not stay like that. It falls forwards into its natural centre parting. I thought everyone's hair behaved like mine because of gravity.

Same here! I think it requires trillions of extra strong hair follicles

But money is not being posh though.

We are not talking about money. It’s about breeding and class. I have neither so however much money o could have I would not be posh or upper class. I’m right in the middle of middle class.

MrTwatchester · 22/08/2024 17:12

British forelock-tuggers are always beside themselves when a toff deigns to show them courtesy, as if they don't deserve it simply for being a fellow human.

"Oh, posh people have impeccable manners!"

Meanwhile the upper class twit is thinking, "better put on a show for this scumbag, noblesse oblige and all that. Look what happened to the Romanovs."

HearTheMessenger · 22/08/2024 17:21

Yy there's a lot of bullshit talked about poshos. Eg the idea that they drive around in scuzzy cars because they're so unmaterialistic. Not unmaterialistic enough to hand over any of their bloody land/money though eh.

Thin
frugal / mean
sensible shoes
well-educated but not naturally bright
discreet
fascist leanings

Fascism always comes up on these threads. Can you name some present day poshos who have fascist leanings - apart from the Mitfords who are mostly now dead?
As for being not naturally bright. Hmm…I think there are clever and stupid people from all backgrounds. Would it be ok to say ‘common oiks are thick?"

You asked for a modern day posho with fascist leanings - Nigel Farage for one!

Although he’s definitely not UC.

HearTheMessenger · 22/08/2024 17:35

Princess Michael is a fascist isn't she

HearTheMessenger · 22/08/2024 17:36

(although, she might be dead, I dunno, I don't keep up with them all)

HearTheMessenger · 22/08/2024 17:38

Johnson de Pfeffel too - maybe not quite goose stepping but certainly racist, exclusionist and populist, thus ticking all the main fascism boxes.

Notthatcatagain · 22/08/2024 17:50

Absolutely nothing to do with money, beautiful manners and no swank.

HearTheMessenger · 22/08/2024 17:50

And actually Rees-Mogg, the same.

HearTheMessenger · 22/08/2024 18:00

And ofc Prince Harry putting on the Nazi gear. He wore it to a themed fancy dress party - theme was "natives and colonials" apparently. I'll just let your mind rest on the thought of a country estate full of posh people thinking it was the most splendid idea to have such a theme.

sueelleker · 22/08/2024 18:12

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 20/08/2024 16:34

The poshest person I knew was balding and dressed like he'd been at a jumble sale in the dark.

My own DC have been bullied for being posh. My friend told me yesterday that I'm the poshest person she knows. I'm a single Mum on benefits. Very much not posh.

We were very poor as kids-Mum used to to cut down jumble sale clothes and unravel jumpers to remake clothes for us. When we started school, her best friend thought we were well off, because we were so well dressed!

Southwestten · 22/08/2024 18:32

So basically anyone right wing has fascist leanings. Does that mean anyone left wing has communist leanings?

TeamPolin · 22/08/2024 18:57

(For men) Red trousers.

HearTheMessenger · 22/08/2024 19:02

Fascism is a slippy fucker because it isn't an ideology as such, in the way communism is. It's one of those "you know it when you see it" situations.

Thing is, we do need to know it when we see it, because we're in Europe and fascism is a peculiarly European scourge that devastated the continent and large parts of the wider world less than a century ago and has never quite gone away.

You don't know/see it by engaging in whataboutery. You know/see it by examining it. We know that it thrives in poverty and inequality. We know that it's populist and exclusionary, that it uses scapegoating and othering, usually along religious/racial lines, and that it facilitates unrest and disruption.

If a person/group acts along those lines, pay attention to them.

HRTQueen · 22/08/2024 19:11

Confidence in social settings
children looking scruffy and in old clothes ds realy posh friends never seem to wear new clothes but you can see they are from money a mile off

Hmm, I can think of a certain person across the Atlantic who fits many of those criteria.
