@SerendipityJane our little saying is "not all motorists are criminals but most criminals are motorists".

driving along in their cars is a good place to find them.

Recently West Midlands Traffic Police had a bit of a blitz on speeding/dangerous driving/car cruising, and it seemed then that many of the motorists they stopped were found to have drugs in the car. Or, maybe there are just many, many people on drugs these days.

It always puzzles me when I watch those Police, Action,Camera type shows, that many people (men, almost always) bring notice to their driving by speeding, not having insurance etc , but then are found to have drugs, huge wads of cash or weapons in their cars. I would have thought they'd want to stay under the radar and not bring notice to themselves.

Farage's mate Tate

Police raid Andrew Tate's home in Romania as new allegations emerge involving minors.

Yuk. Grim.

Afternoon all.

The first thing I heard on radio Scotland this morning was a piece about the government appointing 100 new intelligence officers tasked with investigating illegal asylum seekers. I am heartily sick of hearing about asylum seekers as if it's the most pressing issue we face. The expert commentator opined that only time will tell if this reduces the numbers.
Switched over to R4 and another expert commentator was commenting that only time will tell if the government's strategy is effective.

I'll say one thing for the previous government- they were very effective at raising the media profile of this in my opinion minor issue.

I'm standing in a queue at the dentist later, behind a young family of Indian sub-continent or possibly Middle Eastern heritage, judging from their appearance . I overheard the man give the woman's dob as the same year as my DD - I don't think the woman spoke English. The woman had some missing teeth apparently. I know, I know there's no privacy. It really struck me how lucky my DD is in comparison, living comfortably in her safe, prosperous country of birth in excellent health and how difficult it must be to ( have to ) move far from home, family and friends to somewhere with a different language, different beauraucracy, a grey, wet summer and all the rest that hasn't even occurred to me.

Tax payment is one of my DC's talented partner's paintings.

I see where you’re coming from @mibbelucieachwell (always loved your name btw!) but if there are 600 asylum seekers stuck in a hostel - forget where, but it was on Ch4 news last week - then I think getting assessments done faster is a good thing for those people and the people living in that community. And all the communities where large numbers of asylum seekers are held in limbo, with all the attendant mental health issues that must bring on top of the trauma that caused them to come here.
Totally agree with your point that no one comes to the UK for shits n giggles, though.

SerendipityJane · 21/08/2024 13:34

Those of us of a certain waist size 😀will remember the graphic about government spending and taxing showing that loss due to benefit fraud was zero when compared to loss due to tax avoided, evaded and uncollected*

We need a similar graphic showing that illegal immigration is a tiny tiny %age of overall migration, and of that "small boats" is smaller still.

*WTF ?

mibbelucieachwell · 21/08/2024 13:39

Yes. Increased efficiency has to be a good thing . It's the obsession with this issue I object to.

DuncinToffee · 21/08/2024 13:47

I was watching Freddie Flintoff's tv series Field of Dreams and one of the boys in the team is a refugee from Afghanistan who relayed his story. He was 15 when he fled Sad

Piggywaspushed · 21/08/2024 14:13

Oh, I love that programme. Did you watch series one?

prettybird · 21/08/2024 14:37

I'm just going to repeat what I've said before: there is no such thing as an "illegal asylum seeker" Confused

Until they have been processed, they are just asylum seekers Confused

Once they have been processed, and if their claim for asylum is not found to be legitimate, then they become illegal immigrants and should be deported.

As such, I have no issue with - indeed positively support - increased investment in the processing of claims, to reduce the time that asylum seekers are in limbo, being fed and boarded by the state as they're not allowed to work

itsgettingweird · 21/08/2024 16:03

Completely agree pretty

I heard the announcement and read the bbc news headline and just thought "this from the government who apparently have no plan on immigration"

It absolutely boils by piss when asylum seekers are called illegal immigrants. I very nearly threw something at my tv earlier when someone on ITV said "illegal immigrants coming over on boats". The media really should be held more accountable for incorrect use of language.

But I do welcome the increased people working to stop the criminal gangs and deport those taking the piss out of our system.

But I won't be happy if it doesn't include a plan to process people so they don't need to risk their lives on boats as apparently living in a hotel on £9 a week is better than staying at home.

As someone said above. They (most) ain't doing this for shits and giggles.

In fact the UK in 2024 is hardly the place for seeking unicorns and gold bars.

Oh I saw this advertised. Didn't realise it had started. Where can I find it please?

SerendipityJane · 21/08/2024 16:13

I wonder how many degrees of connectedness certain UK politicians have to these gangs ?

Watch series 1 first , I'd say.

It'll be on iPlayer.

itsgettingweird · 21/08/2024 16:16

I dread to think serendipity

And if they are involved o hope they get the full force of the law too.

It's abhorrent that people felling persecution feel their only way to safety is through risking their lives on a rib across the channel.

People forget to thank their lucky stars daily that we've never needed to face that decision.

itsgettingweird · 21/08/2024 16:34

Currently watching an old episode of Howard's Way Grin it blew my mind as a child it's filmed just down the road from me!

Thanks pointy I'll seek out series 1 and start from the beginning.

When I worked in Metrology, we had an occasional in house magazine written by the museum curator who was called Howard.

Predictably it was entitled "Howards Weigh"

Same! Although I'd only just moved to the area, so didn't know the area or the program very well.

itsgettingweird · 21/08/2024 17:12

You still here now dolly?

Wondering if you suffer the same MP as I do 😂😂

That's actually pretty witty!

itsgettingweird · 21/08/2024 17:15

Although I lived in the city when it was filmed and broadcast and moved to one of the towns it's filmed in just after it finished!

Been in the Jolly Sailor many times!

I'm a bit further away now, but local. Mum and dad still live in the same house, although their MP changed from the infamous one to our previous one due to boundary changes 😆

Genuine question. Is it not illegal to try and gain entry to a country by arriving by boat, ie I couldn't just rock up to France or wherever and expect to be able to live there? Or is it saying 'I am seeking asylum' on arrival that makes the difference?

Didn't the last government fall foul of this ? They tried to make it "an offence" to enter the country "illegally" only to be smacked down by the courts. It certainly cannot be used as an excuse to deny asylum. Which was the intent.

I think it was the ever-ghastly Priti Patel who tried it.

No, it really isn't - otherwise how could people who own yachts sail across the channel and down the coast, docking in harbours and wherever, staying overnight in hotels if they want to etc. do that? You can arrive by boat, you can swim, you can walk should it ever get cold enough for the Channel to freeze over. What matters is what you do afterwards - including claiming asylum.

The people who talk about small boats being illegal are not the sharpest tools in the box.

DuncinToffee · 21/08/2024 17:46

Coming here by small boat is irregular immigratiin. Seeking asylum is not illegal.

To claim asylum in the UK, you have to be on UK soil.

Without safe routes, irregular means are the only options left to get to UK soil.
