There were a variety of views expressed about Athwal.
Funnily enough we were quite able to read a range of views without resorting to sneering and name calling.

By definition they are less self-interested than those on the right. The fundamental belief of the left is collectivism and the right is individualism.

I agree. Although I think historically there have been a lot of Tories who genuinely wanted to make things better for society. It doesn't feel so much like that now.

A somewhat over inflated opinion of your contributions there...

Sure. There are no other opinions or facts to give. 🙄

HannibalHeyes · 03/09/2024 20:11

As someone once said, "you're entitled to your own opinions, but not your own facts"...

Zonder · 03/09/2024 20:12

@itsgettingweird I sometimes feel I'm a bit desensitised to tragedies in the news but both the boat and the murder of the 80 year old today have really hit me. So, so tragic. And the age of the children who murdered the old man is shocking.

I think - to keep it to what I posted about most recently - that the reporting of Mr Atwhal’s rental properties is a fact. And that he’s a Labour MP. And that he’s the former leader of the Labour council in which he owns rental properties. And that he’s been in breach of the regulations he brought in himself when leader.

(As far as reports suggest he’s still a Redbridge councillor.)

But, yes, facts matter more than opinions.

Agree.

And I think views are best placed when they can see both sides.

I train staff on behaviour management. I find myself often reminding them that not fighting the behaviour at the time isn't condoning it. You can accept someone made a mistake and come back to putting it right and finding a better way when everyone is in a better place to have a sensible discussion around it.

When someone says they are sorry I believe them until they show me they aren't! I'll give the benefit of the doubt if things are put right at the owners cost and people get decent living standards. Then a decent agency is given the role and it continues to be right. Id also like to see compensation offered to replace personal items damaged - I'm thinking back to people (not these properties) that have been wringing out curtains it's so damp. Fix the damp and replace the damn stuff your lack of care damaged.
But I don't think absolving yourself of any responsibility for your properties and not being aware of what's going on is acceptable. It's not good enough. And I'd like to see some rental law put in place where owners are responsible alongside management agencies. I'd like to see this in all places where you book through a 3rd party. There's too much passing the buck in general and I think some it's designed to make it difficult to complain so people at the top walk away with your money for an under par service. And that's quite simply not good enough.

Collectivism is more moral than individualism?

You seem to be having an issue with reading comprehension again. Nobody but you mentioned morals.

What do you think? Which is more moral, pooling resources so all sick children have access to healthcare or keeping hold of resources so only wealthy children do?

Ok. So no claim to greater social morality by the left then. 👍

Who’s ever suggested that?

On a lighter note for the unantagonistic regulars, I'm so excited about paying my next cat tax. I've finally got a decent picture of 'Mr Tiddles' looking gorgeous rather than gurning for the camera.

Zonder · 03/09/2024 20:38

Won't be long til the new thread @MrTiddlesTheCat 😍

Today's news has been shocking and sad. So many lives lost, so many families suffering tonight.Sad

Nobody said that either. Literally nobody but you had mentioned morals. Stop trying to twist things for a reaction.

It's a windfall tax. Normal taxes will apply thereafter.

The rough sleeper probably got thrown out of one of Mr Atwhal’s properties for complaining about the mould.

He says he was drawing attention to the problem. By taking a photo, posting it on twitter and moaning about Sadiq Khan.

Notonthestairs · 03/09/2024 21:02

Well, it is good to highlight the numbers of homeless people as there is certainly work to be done -

"An estimated 3,898 people slept rough in 2023, an annual increase of 27% – the largest annual rise since 2015** and more than double (120%) the number of people recorded as sleeping rough in 2010, when records began."

www.theguardian.com/society/2024/feb/29/number-of-people-sleeping-rough-in-england-rises-for-second-year-running

No idea how many of them slept rough in Mayfair however.

HannibalHeyes · 03/09/2024 21:03

How very dare Labour not have solved the homelessness crisis that we caused in just a few short weeks!

bombastix · 03/09/2024 21:06

The homeless? Aren’t they the people you step over when you come out of the opera?

some things never change
