Kemi? Self-centred? O surely not, she is known and revered for her compassion and acute political judgment. Front of the queue as usual.

Cat news

Matt Chorley: Your children were lobbying for a German Shepherd dog... how's that negotiation going?

Keir Starmer: There's been a long summer of negotiations... & we're now getting a kitten... 👀

MC: Does Larry know about this?

SerendipityJane · 02/09/2024 16:24

There is nothing more satisfying than misunderstood strategies returning to harm the actor. It vague reminds me of the warning in Dennis Wheatley books (thanks DM) that once you summon a demon, it has to return with someones soul.

You would have thought that the rapidly deflating Tory party, still hearing the leak of power due to the Brexit demon they summoned would have learned by now. But no, they had to summon the MAGA incubus (or is it succubus ?)/

Voters beginning to think Conservatives are ‘weird’, research suggests

Tories found to have problems with relatability, and few voters could identify party leadership candidates

More on this important story.

From Pippa Crerar More bad news for @Number10cat as Keir Starmer tells
@MattChorley on his new @bbc5live show that his kids are getting a Siberian kitten today. "The problem we've got, which is the same for JoJo the cat, is that the only door out of our new flat is bomb proof. Therefore getting a cat flap is proving a little bit difficult. But our daughter has persuaded us that the problem isn't any bigger for two cats than one."

And no - I have no idea why the large cat appeared! Siberian cats are gorgeous.

A cat was in the review. Apologies.

Apparently Badenoch currently only has 11 MPs backing her.

Or

"Surprisingly Badenoch has 11 MPs willing to back her" WinkGrin

RafaistheKingofClay · 02/09/2024 17:46

As long as Starmer pays his cat tax.

itsgettingweird · 02/09/2024 17:55

And further down it says that the mum of a 12yo due in court today has flown out of Ibiza for 5 days holiday.

Do not for one minute excuse what he did but you do feel for these kids and see how they end up so disenfranchised if even their own parents don't care.

cardibach · 02/09/2024 18:10

Yes @itsgettingweird

The need for attention and a sense of belonging makes him a prime subject for radicalisation.

Emily Thornberry excellent on C4 news just now. I do hope there’s a juicy committee chair lined up for her.

And there’s another five years before the next election. I wonder if there’s a deliberate policy to get all the unpopular shit out of the way right at the beginning so it’s forgotten by the time we go to the polls again.

I do think that's the plan: First eat the frog.🐸

Get the shit stuff over now, reap the rewards later, maybe lift the 2 child benefit cap in year 4?

That Crace piece was honestly one of his best!

And in another article.... We're channelling the US with this one...

Conservative politicians have started to be seen as “weird”, and few members of the public – even including the party’s own voters – are able to identify the Tory leadership candidates, research suggests

Asked who had the best chance of winning the next election for the Tories, 70% of respondents either said they did not know or that they thought none of the candidates could win – with James Cleverly given the greatest chance, on 8%, followed by Priti Patel

John Crace never disappoints.

The Tory bots are scaremongering again. This time it is Labour scrapping the single person council tax discount.

I find it hard to believe they will do this.

It will keep them busy for a bit.

"Our mate Phil" had an interesting dive into tax options yesterday. Picking through the native media hysteria.

The idea of a land tax (which is neither an income tax, nor a wealth tax, by the way) does start to look very sensible. And as he pointed out, you can't take the land out of the country can you ? (To counter the tiresome bollocks about the rich fleeing Britain).

In fact it's such a sensible idea, it could be used to replaced council tax.

TL;DR.

Land used for housing - low to no tax.
Land used for business -tax
Land used for industry - tax
Land being developed - tax lowly (encourage investment)
Land used for fuck all - tax very highly.

Incidentally (I claim no credit) the correct answer to any bollocks about "the rich fleeing" is simply "Oh, that's alright. We'll make more rich people. Plenty more where those cunts came from. After all, nobody voted Labour to be poorer did they ?"

When life deals you a fucking idiotic partisan media, you make arseholes.

How would this sit with any Labour outlook? Doesn’t fit at all?

Countrylife2002 · 03/09/2024 11:12

Sorry wrong quote ! I mean re single discount !

Countrylife2002 · 03/09/2024 11:14

Surely before that they’d means test child benefit more thoroughly? Although id lose more I would find it fairer to lose child benefit than the council tax discount. One person obviously uses less council services than two+

DuncinToffee · 03/09/2024 11:30

All I can find on this is a Sky News headline and froth on twitter

Notonthestairs · 03/09/2024 12:10

This is how it will be until the budget - someone suggests XYZ and unless Labour immediately reject XYZ in the strongest of terms and anything related to it then rumours will circulate (occasionally fanned by a few unhappy private school parents).

cardibach · 03/09/2024 12:20

Yup. Labour will not pre announce anything and neither will they confirm or deny rumours, otherwise they’ll spend the next month tying the budget up in knots. Im thinking if writing a standard post to this effect for frothy threads.

bombastix · 03/09/2024 12:23

This is actually the way it used to be! You did not leak Budget measures.

I mean the Tories pretty much gave up on that, but the expectation was silence until the day…
