What do you do to keep up appearances?

My example is an odd one, but I bought a bottle of the Fairy Max Power washing up lid (the one with the amazing lid). Once empty, I filled up that same bottle with a cheaper alternative.

It’s much better in terms of practicality, but the bottle also looks nicer. 😁

Does anyone else do something like this? Or am I just crazy?

I've just had a new kitchen fitted and I have stunt dishcloths, all pristine white and folded, which I save for anyone who's seeing it for the first time.

What are stunt dishcloths/tea towels?

Same! “Posh” shopping bags and refilling hand wash 🤣

I refill hand wash from a 5l container in the garage. Bought to reduce plastic/cheaper. Does that count?

Italia89 · 19/08/2024 19:06

So not the point of the thread but people re filling soap and shower gel freaks me out.
My son is anaphylactic to dairy and we've drilled in to him to always check ingredients of soap before using it, particularly when out and at other people's houses.

If someone re fills a soap containing milk protein into a fancy container, he'd have no idea :/
(Palmolive milk and honey contains real milk, so this is a legitimate fear with soaps).

I thought my Nan was the height of sophistication for having REAL Weetabix until I was old enough to read best before dates and track the box never changed between visits!

HellsBells67 · 19/08/2024 19:07

I'm another one using an illy tin, think it's been in use for around 20 years now! Just such a great tin and better closure than any of the coffee canisters on sale.

Bellyblueboy · 18/08/2024 16:06

I can’t imagine caring enough to refill expensive packaging with cheaper stuff just so people think I am spending too much money on soap😂

That's not what they are doing.

BirthdayRainbow · 19/08/2024 19:12

@PeggyMitchellsCameo how lovely for your mum, what a gem the staff were to do that for her. What class she had. I'm sorry you have lost her 💐

BirthdayRainbow · 19/08/2024 19:17

Sly dig @Doppe . I'd rather be mates with you than them.

SnailandWhal · 19/08/2024 19:20

Not sure if it's the same but... when I have people over, I'll clean the house then artfully leave around a little 'clutter'. So could be a book that I've 'just put down' or a few scattered baby toys to give a 'lived in' look whilst still looking clean and tidy. Ridiculous I know!

What are stunt dishcloths/tea towels?

Items not to be used, just there for show!

Oh WOW! I have a Versace blush I bought my mum.
She sadly passed away in 2012 and I treasure it.
To add she was the Queen of Keeping Up.
After receiving her Versace prezzie she went to the counter to introduce herself - she loved doing that.
And noticed there was a Versace hand mirror and tissue holder on the display for people trying stuff on.
Asked the lady politely - oh I’d love one of each where can I get them? Told they were retail display only.
She would pop by regularly, never asked again, but the odd lip gloss or two would be bought for gifts.
When the counter got a refresh of course she got a call - would you like to collect your mirror and tissue holder?
Brought up in poverty during WW2, she worked hard, saved well, and lived by the ‘if you don’t ask you don’t get’ motto.
It worked like a charm. I’ve seen her go for afternoon tea in five star hotels and ask at reception if she could be shown around the most expensive suite. They would clearly know it wouldn’t be as a potential guest, but she just had charm. And obviously on her way out someone would present her with a load of guest toiletries.
I miss her.
And I wish I had her charm, but I don’t!

Your mum must have so lovely 💝

I once bumped into a local woman in Aldi, she was horrified and very obviously tried to give me a story as an excuse for being there. I just looked at her puzzled and said that I shop there regularly. She looked perplexed.
very odd, why do people care.

My mothers friend used to reuse a shopping bag from Brown Thomas (Irish equivalent to Harrod’s) so that the neighbours would think she’d been shopping in BTs Grin

Edited because autocorrect thought it knew better.

Edited

I laughed so much at that! That’s something my Mother would do🤣🤣 The Irish artist ray Hurley does prints as per below. Every time I see a Brown Thomas bag I just think in my head pure notions 🤣🤣

No no, Jane Norman 🤣

MarvellousMonsters · 19/08/2024 20:23

I genuinely couldn't give a shit about 'appearances'

I'm using one of those Fairy Power Max bottles. It certainly works really well. I bought a large bottle of Fairy Platinum the antibacterial one on offer at the weekend with the intention of using it to refill when the Power Max runs out. I have tried other washing up liquids but still go back to Fairy.

Me too! I’m not fussy on brands except for fairy washing up liquid. That’s the one compromise I won’t make!

Hmm1234 · 19/08/2024 20:58

Decant my aldi dishwasher tablets into a nice glass jar

HarrietsweetHarriet · 19/08/2024 21:07

My Fortnums peppermint tea canister (a gift) is always refilled with Aldi equivalent. I really like the tin because it has a double lid - an interior lid with a little button and the main lid.
As Peter Griffin would say 'it pleases me'.

I quite like to use Waitrose carrier bags when I'm shopping in Lidl.

Mind you, I also rather enjoy the frisson of using Lidl shopping bags when I'm in Waitrose. I also have a bag with 'Royal Ballet School' on the side, which I also like to use in Waitrose.😂

"the frisson" Grin

It was Jane Norman in the 2000's haha

ColdWaterDipper · 19/08/2024 21:45

Bugger all here 😂 I don’t care what other people think. But everyone says I am posh - must be an aura I give off as I am usually dressed rather tattily and drive a fairly crappy car. I have no high opinions of myself but equally I assume no-one else gives two hoots about my life.

I did grow up in a very privileged way, and still benefit from family money quite a bit (for example we live in an old family property worth a lot of money, and have jolly nice holidays, ponies etc), but in reality I married a local chap and we don’t have bags of money ourselves. We’re very happy though. I do notice my DH worries about what other people think, but in silly ways that would never even occur to me, and we have a bit of a joke about that.

I learned during chemotherapy when I was as bald as a copy, that actually very few people even notice what’s going on with others, let alone judge them. Everyone is too concerned with thinking about themselves to notice what other folk are up to and what shopping bags they are carrying!

EscapeTheCastle · 18/08/2024 14:04

At school in the 80s one would have to carry ones PE kit in a Top Shop carrier bag.

The cringe of picking up my pe kit from the office, that I'd forgotten and DM had helpfully dropped of, then discovering it was in a kwiksave bag.

pollymere · 19/08/2024 22:08

My Jute reusable shopping bag is from Fortnum's 😂. Same price as my M&S one.

I also like buying high-end clothes from charity shops' Designer rails.

AnnieSnap · 19/08/2024 22:18

Wow! People actually do things like that! It wouldn’t even occur to me. Would it be so bad for your neighbours to know you use own brand washing up liquid?
