What do you do to keep up appearances?

My example is an odd one, but I bought a bottle of the Fairy Max Power washing up lid (the one with the amazing lid). Once empty, I filled up that same bottle with a cheaper alternative.

It’s much better in terms of practicality, but the bottle also looks nicer. 😁

Does anyone else do something like this? Or am I just crazy?

Same! “Posh” shopping bags and refilling hand wash 🤣

Yep! We keep our reusable bags in our bottom kitchen drawer. When the drawer is open, you can see M&S and Ocado cloth totes first. They’re hiding our impressive collection of Lidl and IKEA bags 😇

Oh WOW! I have a Versace blush I bought my mum.
She sadly passed away in 2012 and I treasure it.
To add she was the Queen of Keeping Up.
After receiving her Versace prezzie she went to the counter to introduce herself - she loved doing that.
And noticed there was a Versace hand mirror and tissue holder on the display for people trying stuff on.
Asked the lady politely - oh I’d love one of each where can I get them? Told they were retail display only.
She would pop by regularly, never asked again, but the odd lip gloss or two would be bought for gifts.
When the counter got a refresh of course she got a call - would you like to collect your mirror and tissue holder?
Brought up in poverty during WW2, she worked hard, saved well, and lived by the ‘if you don’t ask you don’t get’ motto.
It worked like a charm. I’ve seen her go for afternoon tea in five star hotels and ask at reception if she could be shown around the most expensive suite. They would clearly know it wouldn’t be as a potential guest, but she just had charm. And obviously on her way out someone would present her with a load of guest toiletries.
I miss her.
And I wish I had her charm, but I don’t!

I love this ❤️

Did you keep the mirror and tissue holder?

I have been known to peel yellow stickers off food before putting it in the office fridge. I know it's still dated but I don't think people notice that as much.

wippandzipp · 18/08/2024 18:16

Posh shopping bags. Reminds me of when DH couldn't find DC school swim bag once and took her in with a Bargain Booze bag. The pearl grasping at the primary school gates when I picked DC up. Slightly off topic. No, I can't think of anything.

Years ago I had a friend who was a bit up herself, she's still a good friend but realises it now lol

Her daddy paid all her expenses, bought her a flat etc, while we were dirt poor working at entry level professional jobs so being paid like £1 an hour as they used to be able to in those days.

This was before gin was IN. But she would only drink Gordon's and "could" taste the difference. I used to decant Aldis cheapest gin into a Gordon's bottle and did it for years. Served with schweppes tonic she never knew any different.

Had similar with a snobby girl at work who used to bang on about how low class people who shopped at Iceland were.

Invited her to our flat warming party where we served up a load of Iceland's finest frozen little nibbles. She INHALED them. My then-flatmate and I were in stitches, watching her go back for plate after plate, sucking every little bit of crumb and sauce off her fingers like it was 5-star cuisine.

She asked me for the recipe for one item after, so she clearly thought it was homemade. Had to google a random one to pass on. 😂

who sees yout washing up liquid? Who is it you’re trying to impress? Genuinely curious.

Mow stripes in to the grass. My neighbours are lovely and never stop working on their house/garden so I do it for them. Though I did decline their offer of their Karcher pressure washer so they're probably seething about the state of my driveway.

Cherrysoup · 18/08/2024 20:34

I recently bought Urban Outfitters BDG jeans despite knowing they were too small a size (fortunately they don’t have an elasticated waist, unlike the cargoes I’d love). I’m now delighted they fit-just-I am so happy, I don’t care that they’re a trauma to get on! 🤣

Looking at my weedy front garden compared to my neighbours' pristine one (despite them being away most of the summer) I guess I just don't care enough! I am gong to tackle it now...

This. Mowing the lawn/weeding. I absolutely hate doing it - it really makes my bad back flare up for days after and I also come away feeling filthy, usually nettled or bitten/stung by something and crawling with bugs. I only do it so my house doesn’t ’let the side down’ compared to the rest of the houses in our little cul-de-sac. I know for a fact it would be commented on if I left it - when we first moved in, the garden was very low on our priorities and got a bit ‘unruly’. We finally got round to sorting it and one of our neighbours stopped by while we were out there and said “ah we were starting to wonder if the house had been left empty”. I guess our car coming and going up the drive/ curtains opened and shut/ bins being put out and brought back in (and other usual signs of occupancy) wasn’t enough of a clue…

Naff all i am who i am like it or piss off.

CalicoPusscat · 18/08/2024 20:56

Can't think of anything except for when I'm asked the last film I watched I pick a more meaningful one (which I have actually watched!) rather than one which might make me look a bit more vacuous.

It's on my medical records that I like watching films 😆

so you don’t do that?

BCBird · 18/08/2024 21:10

Not much apart from smiling when sometimes feel like I would rather not. As for products- nowt

CrystalSingerFan · 18/08/2024 21:21

One for Bohomovies. A schoolfriend in a posh girls school in the 1970s (I was there on a scholarship) used to cut the labels out of her father's ties (Dior, Yves St Laurent, Cardin) and sew them onto her jeans, denim jackets, etc. I admired that... 😀

Ds would only ever have heinz ketchup. Cost a fortune. I have actually washed heinz bottles out and refilled it with unbranded stuff. He never knew the difference. I didn't feel so cross then about the waste that went in the bin with whatever he was eating. Poor boy.
He's 28 now and still does it but buys it himself.

Perler · 19/08/2024 03:34

Similar to a PP I send a stunt salad in DDs packed lunch every day. It comes home exactly the way it was sent out but at least it looks like I feed her all the food groups if anyone is checking. I've got it down to a fine art now - mini cucumber (reusable a few days in a row), cherry tom (likewise) and carrot sticks (I eat them in the afternoon when I'm unpacking the lunchbox).

I also put a tablecloth on our table if anyone is expected, to cover up the permanent marker scribbles etc that I've not managed to get off.

Airtentmamma23 · 19/08/2024 04:45

I get my windows cleaned on the outside every 6 weeks, but hardly ever do the inside. With 3 kids, inside is probably worse tbh.

user68712226 · 19/08/2024 05:07

In the late 80s/early 90s our neighbour did specialist sewing work for Vivienne Westwood on her leather items. He kindly gave me a batch of old labels once and for years my high street clothing became fake VW stuff. I recycled those labels over and over.

Edingril · 19/08/2024 05:36

Keep up appearances of what? If it is being posh why on earth for?

The world has really gone mad, unless this is one of those joke threads?

PetrichorSoul · 18/08/2024 13:50

My mothers friend used to reuse a shopping bag from Brown Thomas (Irish equivalent to Harrod’s) so that the neighbours would think she’d been shopping in BTs Grin

Edited because autocorrect thought it knew better.

Edited

I remember that from living in Dublin years ago, people would stuff their Penny's (Primark) shopping into Thomas Brown bags on Luas. :D

RickiRaccoon · 19/08/2024 05:51

We moved into a new house a year ago and I am currently doing up the front yard on a mission to have the nicest looking house on the street. Admittedly, it's not a high bar.

I also buy nicer brand accessories on sale so my plain outfits look fancier. I like to think I do it as much for me as anyone else but I can't be sure!

CalicoPusscat · 19/08/2024 05:56

@Edingril it's not just posh but lots of other things, e.g. to look less slovenly or vapid or whatever

I do that but I use antibacterial fairy to fill it up, it's much easier to use in the max power bottle, also use the antibacterial fairy to clean tables/work surfaces in the kitchen
