What do you do to keep up appearances?

My example is an odd one, but I bought a bottle of the Fairy Max Power washing up lid (the one with the amazing lid). Once empty, I filled up that same bottle with a cheaper alternative.

It’s much better in terms of practicality, but the bottle also looks nicer. 😁

Does anyone else do something like this? Or am I just crazy?

We have stunt tea towels and oven gloves for when the landlord comes around. We bought them to use to match with the table cloth but the tea towels don't dry anything so they get kept in a drawer until inspection day. The oven gloves are awkward to use so we use the old stained scrappy one day to day.

Stunt apple in lunchboxes.

My DS's apple came home so often, we named it Norman and had a funeral for him when he finally went to shit.

MrsClatterbuck · 19/08/2024 13:44

I'm using one of those Fairy Power Max bottles. It certainly works really well. I bought a large bottle of Fairy Platinum the antibacterial one on offer at the weekend with the intention of using it to refill when the Power Max runs out. I have tried other washing up liquids but still go back to Fairy.

I can’t imagine caring enough to refill expensive packaging with cheaper stuff just so people think I am spending too much money on soap😂

I do it because my DM bought me a lovely set of handwash and hand cream that sit on a porcelain dish. But the bottles are quite small, and when I buy a bottle of replacement handwash the bottle doesn’t fit in the hole. I don’t want to throw the whole set out because it looks nice and the cream hardly gets used so I just top up the bottle.

You can get silicone funnels, which work great for refilling! I got mine on Amazon 😊

Do you really think your guests think more of you because you can afford branded cleaning products? That's the zenith of bucketdom!
Haha. I do minimal cleaning if I've got guests.
Just about empty the ashtrays and the bin, run the hoover. People aren't coming for the scenery!

PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance · 19/08/2024 14:02

My friend shops at Primark all the time.. but takes a Next/ M&S etc carrier bags to put her items in.
I don't drink coffee.. but l bought a cheap brand once for guests and put it in an expensive jar l got from my sister .
Can't think of anything else .

My mothers friend used to reuse a shopping bag from Brown Thomas (Irish equivalent to Harrod’s) so that the neighbours would think she’d been shopping in BTs Grin

Edited because autocorrect thought it knew better.

Brown Thomas is definitely not equivalent to Harrods.

invisiblecat · 19/08/2024 14:13

I quite like to use Waitrose carrier bags when I'm shopping in Lidl.

Mind you, I also rather enjoy the frisson of using Lidl shopping bags when I'm in Waitrose. I also have a bag with 'Royal Ballet School' on the side, which I also like to use in Waitrose.😂

StickyStones · 19/08/2024 14:17

I also buy cheap coffee and store it in an illy jar, for practical reasons only though! Our illy jar must be 8 years old now 😝

I put Milton brown soap in the downstairs loo when we're expecting visitors and take it back out again when they're gone. Couldn't be bothered with decanting cheaper stuff in, I know my guests would know the difference anyway :)

I had the opposite experience. I had a small Brown Thomas bag that I used to bring my lunch in every day. Then I realised an idiot at work told people that she knew that I secretly brought my lunch in and pretended to everyone that I spent my lunch hour shopping in BTs. Thankfully everyone could see she was a fool, they saw me eating at my desk with my same bag every day. It never occurred to me that people would notice or care, I just like their bags!

Ilovecleaning · 19/08/2024 17:56

I think reusing posh carrier bags is really naff because everyone can tell what you’re doing. It makes you look even more badly off than you actually are 😊

Stunt apple in lunchboxes.

I was just thinking that I didn't do anything to keep up appearances, and then I remembered performative fruit in lunchboxes. I referred to it as 'the travelling apple'

I have my eyebrows regularly waxed. If I do not, my monobrow appearance is terrifying. I look as if I am coming for you.
I am selling my house, and have a stunt Tea Towel. I whip it out for viewings. It is yellow, and neatly folded. It looks better than the slightly tea stained, faded soggy messes that usually sit around the kitchen.

I've just had a new kitchen fitted and I have stunt dishcloths, all pristine white and folded, which I save for anyone who's seeing it for the first time.

Bellyblueboy · 19/08/2024 18:17

I was getting all high and mighty when I realised I have a ‘highbrow’ bookcase filled with autobiographies, travel books, leadership gurus etc then I have all the Richard and Judy type book club books in a plastic storage box under the guest bed😂

One has a special gardening crown for when I'm supervising the serfs tending the vegetables - just in case one of the neighbours sees me.

One has to keep up appearances or else society will just fall apart, and one doesn't want that does one?

😂😂😂😂😂

ThePlumVan · 19/08/2024 18:38

M&S bags for life get reused - Aldi and B&M do not.

lisaevans · 19/08/2024 18:47

J-d bag over the shoulder jobby- elite school bag 😁

Holidayhell22 · 19/08/2024 18:56

I don’t do this now but years ago I had a glass jar filled with bubble bath which I bought from Virgin vie. It also came with a spoon to ladle the bubble bath.
Once I’d used it all I filled it with Radox.

AdoraBell · 19/08/2024 18:59

Nothing.

I must be the only person who doesn’t like that new bottle.

I don’t think I do anything rather than tidy up so my friends don’t think I’m the slob I really am.

fetchacloth · 19/08/2024 19:01

Most of my cleaning stuff comes from either Lidl or Aldi all of which stays in the bottles/containers it came in.
Frankly I don't care what visitors to my house think about that.😎
