In A&E - keep me company

Skidded and came off my pedelec bike, landed on my leg and elbow. There is a hole in my elbow so decided it needed A&E. After being triaged I've been sent to Minor Injuries. Anyone want to keep me company? I am not good on my own and would also much rather be in bed than here...

@Viques sorry, I may have confused the issue by talking about Dutch health care (OP is Dutch).

@Thisreallyhurts I hope that heals well. Guessing it is going to be sore for a while.

Tiswa · 16/08/2024 08:49

Hope you get home soon!
DS came home from school and said he had hurt his knee looked at him (wearing trousers) and although they were soaked through (in what I initially thought was water) they were completely in tact. Turns out it was blood and he had a 2 inch hash through to the bone that needed 12 atitiches and 3 post stitch nurses appointments and has left him with an amazing scar

the trousers though he wore again and not a mark on them at all

Haven't read the whole thread, glad that you're OK OP. Surprised that you think this is how A&E should work - at my local hospital you definitely would not have been kept in, instead you'd have been given a planned appointment if needed, let go home and asked to return if xrays showed anything needing treatment.

GnomeDePlume · 16/08/2024 09:00

@Tiswa how strange that there was no damage to trousers!

And the gaping holes in OP's arm with visible bone? What would have been the appropriate treatment from your local hospital? A squirt of zoflora and a wet paper towel to dab it with?

The original plan was as you describe. I was kept in because the cuts were so deep they thought they might need cleaning in theatre, which the consultant needed to decide on ward rounds this morning. In the meantime, I also needed IV antibiotics.

Good morning @Thisreallyhurts . I hope you managed to get a little sleep. In my experience noises start to be made around 6am and then they want to take obs etc before breakfast so probably not 😞. You may be nil by nouth... In which case no breakfast! Hopefully just local anaesthesia though.

I am sure you are going to be very sore for a while, but hopefully it will heal well, and quickly. You probably can't wait to get home for some proper sleep!

This was entirely one-sided, like all my cycling mishaps. I am Dutch and couldn't live without a bike ❤️

Yes, had dinner before I ventured out. Topped up with a Twix as I was shivering from the shock.

Six stitches in my elbow, just waiting to be seen by the consultant now.

If that’s the case, I’d probably avoid your local hospital if you need treatment.

Given you are not the one examining the OP and making medical decisions for her, I'm not sure you can know that.

@Thisreallyhurts

Word snel beter, OP

Whisper (Am I the only saddo who has nothing better to do than use Google Translate on the posts in Dutch ?)

Rust uit voor enkele daagen en neem alle piinstillers

Just reading this thread. OP's photo caused a glitch on my phone. Then I was looking at my phone's stored photos and OP's elbow hole photo had somehow stored itself there!!!! 😱🤢

I am definitely not a sporner corner type of person! I've quickly deleted.

Ow ow ow!!!

But I swear OP, underneath the 3 punctures on the elbow bone the rest of your wound has a face! 2 eyes and a sad looking mouth that is bleeding.

Hope you're out of there and better soon xxx

I was going to post the same thing! I think it's a good sign it's smiling 😃

(Didn't read the bit about the sad face - the one I can see is happy!).

You get sent home without xray results then called back to return if needed ??

What a waste of everyone’s time!

It was a break with a hole so potential to be an open fracture which would need a clean out in theatre and IV antibiotics
Luckily, she doesnt need theatre but still needed the IV Antibiotics and the stitches

Your hospital sounds neglectful to be honest

Thisreallyhurts · 16/08/2024 17:55

I'm home with ABs. Have 6 stitches that need to stay in for two weeks. I'm tired😴

This. And maybe stay off that bike for a bit. At least until you’ve healed.

I'll try. It's my main form of transport though as I don't drive!

Oof! I hope she's OK! Adrenaline does weird things to you! I got back on my bike after a bit as well and didn't start properly crying until I was home.

Ughh read your updates. How horrible, hope you are ok and mending. Your humour sounds unscathed.

Friend is ok. She got two cracked ribs and bruised from her shoulder to her arse down one side. You’re right about adrenaline, she got out the ditch and righted the bike and drove to my house (closer than hers). But the delayed shock was horrible. She was sobbing once I persuaded her to let me take her to A&E and when they let us home (fortunately only 2 hours later) she wanted me to stay with her to sleep and only calmed down with me rubbing her back like a baby. Poor thing was shivering, teeth chattering and everything.

She’s doing ok though and is now more worried about the bike… 🙄🙄🙄
