In A&E - keep me company

Skidded and came off my pedelec bike, landed on my leg and elbow. There is a hole in my elbow so decided it needed A&E. After being triaged I've been sent to Minor Injuries. Anyone want to keep me company? I am not good on my own and would also much rather be in bed than here...

Ohhhhhhh owwwwww... that does look a bit icky.

A few family injuries..

Sister - on her first little motorbike - hit on the bonce by a pheasant. (It did not make it, my DF went out later and collected it for dinner!! Ahh.. rural life, he was more concerned with where to find the corpse than her, when she rang to tell him) - she came off the bike, landed hard on both hands.
Got back on, carried on with her day (day trip to london on the train), got back to home city, realised wrists still REALLY hurting, worse than they had shortly after the crash... went to A&E - both wrists broken.

Me - got bitten by the dog I walked, long story short really not the dogs fault, combination of horrible training and my lack of knowledge at the time. Big hole in my forearm, went to hospital, told Mother (thats how long ago this was!) could she come and collect me as our A&E nowhere near where I lived and several bus rides but was on her way home and she often worked there too...

She came into A&E where I was sat waiting, huffing and puffing and declared 'It had better be a really BIG HOLE'... So i took blood soaked tea towel off to show her... and she hit the bloody deck in a dead faint!

So then she had all the nurses and porters she knew (she was a contractor working around the hospital site regularly) fussing over her - whilst I sat there with a gaping wound in my arm... for 6 more hours.

It was a very big hole. I still have the scars today. Anyway she declared she was fit to drive, took me home... and I made us stop at the dogs house so I could let him out for a wee as I knew he'd not been out. He came to the door with a squeaky carrot for me, I'd like to think by way of apology but I do actually know better. My darling parent... sat in the car, so as not to be near the savage beast (Old English Sheepdog).

Dustyblue · 16/08/2024 05:54

Ow ow ow!!!

But I swear OP, underneath the 3 punctures on the elbow bone the rest of your wound has a face! 2 eyes and a sad looking mouth that is bleeding.

Hope you're out of there and better soon xxx

I like the idea of an apology carrot!

We discovered the Dutch health service when DH accidentally cut off the end of DS's finger with a folding bed.

He immediately took DS to the doctor. Nurse/receptionist looked, gave DH a dressing and sent them into the doctor next. Doctor looked and decided it was more than she could deal with. She phoned both the local hospitals to discuss with consultants which would be best for the wound. Sent DH off with a letter. DH arrived at the hospital to find a plastic surgeon waiting practically needle and thread in hand.

DS was given a little soft toy crocodile which he still has now, more than 20 years later.

There's a young woman here who is very distressed. She looks like she has self-harmed and has anorexia. She wants to leave but apparently can't. She is crying "you said I could leave!" On repeat. It's very upsetting to hear. This is the thing I hate about hospitals, you can never completely escape other people's distress.

I was in a short stay Ward last year with a horrendous infection, left side of my face was swollen to twice the size. I was in so much pain and generally felt yuck. A lady was brought in to the bed opposite me - everything I know about her was from her very loud phone calls - she had cancer and was dying, they could make her feel a whole lot better with a blood transfusion but she was refusing it, she had 5 kids who didn't speak to her anymore as she'd been an alcoholic for most of their lives and by the sounds of it had neglected them. She concluded to a friend that there was nothing to live for as she couldn't smoke cigarettes anymore, they made her sick.

I had a bit of a mini break down after listening to all that, nurse found me sobbing. It was a sad insight into someone else's life and hearing the doctors saying she'd have a painful death within approx 3 weeks if she didn't have the blood transfusion, and her saying that's fine was just so sad.

Oooh that looks painful… I’m pleased that they are fraying everything. Sometimes things are missed when there is more pain or blood in more obvious areas. I’ve just come out of hospital after having some rather blah cardiac procedures done. I’m okay but a bit squicked out by it all. I am an Aussie but lived in NL for years. Was always shocked at how there weren’t more cycling accidents on icy bike paths.

Nogodsnomasters · 16/08/2024 06:46

What a nightmare of an evening/night for you. You must be absolutely exhausted and fed up now.

Tiredofallthis101 · 16/08/2024 07:15

Oh no,hope they get you sorted soon. Sometimes the most innocuous injuries end up the worst ones.

hattimehead · 16/08/2024 07:22

errr, ouch! How are you feeling this morning?

HMTheQueenMuffin · 16/08/2024 07:23

Hope you are okay OP. Thanks

Last time I was in A&E it was due to an asthma attack. Which despite me being in the middle of it still took them 4 hours to put me on a nebuliser and steroids. A giggly drunk teen couple came in brought by one of their mum. The boy had play kicked at a tv, connected and slashed his foot and leg into pieces. The drunkenness meant it did not seem to hurt much but at a guess he needed a fair bit of surgery - eventually.

Mumdiva99 · 16/08/2024 07:23

Oh my gosh - they kept you in. I hope they sort you out this kerning and let you go quickly. (I'm sure they won't- hospital's aren't always the quickest). Get hubby to bring you a nice breakfast sandwhich in. Along with shower gel, towel and toothbrush.
I hope there isn't too much pain on the fracture. Take care of you. X

Oh and about 5 years ago DH was in London for work (he cycles everywhere when in London) and he rang me in the afternoon. I said 'Sorry, can't talk in a rush ...' and he replied 'That's fine, just to let you know I am in A&E'. A photo-taking tourist had walked backwards to get a better shot of something and walked right into DH on his bike. He broke his elbow in 3 places and now has an extremely impressive scar (to match the one on his ankle when he broke that 30 years ago in a remarkably similar incident).

Mynewnameis · 16/08/2024 07:38

Blimey. You sound so brave

starfishmummy · 16/08/2024 07:57

Hope you managed to get some sleep @Thisreallyhurts.

ApolloandDaphne · 16/08/2024 07:59

Oh poor you. I hope you get home soon.

Sirzy · 16/08/2024 08:03

Hopefully all is ok. Have the xrayed the leg too?

Thisreallyhurts · 16/08/2024 08:05

Thanks for all your stories everyone! I'm absolutely shattered but the consultant has just checked me over and said I don't need theatre!!! They're going to numb it and put a few stitches in. News from home is that my boys aren't too concerned, so that's good! I'm trying to work up the energy to get dressed and go to the loo, I hate being in PJs around Sydney's...

YouMustBeHappyNow · 16/08/2024 08:18

Sydney's?

DailyEnergyCrisis · 16/08/2024 08:18

Goodness op! Usually on these threads I look at the damage and think no way that needs A&E but yours is really nasty. You’ve done so well cracking on through it- never nice to be in hospital.

Haha, I did wonder when I started this thread if I'd be told it wasn't an A&E job! It was most definitely an accident though, even if maybe not an emergency!

OK you vipers, here's the pic!

I have the tiniest fracture (the size of a pen tip) and the preliminary plan is a sling and ABs.

Ugh, just heard the doc say you can see the bone 🤢

Ooooh. That’s impressive. If it was on Casualty there would be a BAFTA nomination for the make up department.

Isn't early August the time all the new doctors come on their rotations? I bet there are quite a few of them whose week has been enhanced by your elbow.

(Obligatory empathy input.)
Hope you aren’t in too much pain. Did the bike survive?

Ah, have now read on a bit and realised you are not in the UK. Hope you are on your way home soon.

I am in the UK! No clue about rotations TBH - everyone has been lovely and I feel well looked after!
