Putin really is the devil. How do we outsmart someone like that?!!

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 06/10/2024 00:28

Listen to bloody Kasparov. If anyone should be an advisor to the leaders he should, all things considered.

heldinadream · 06/10/2024 08:59

One of the things (it seems to me as an unsophisticated and by no means perfectly informed observer) about Putin playing all sides and having his fingers in all pies is that it surely leaves him ultimately vulnerable to all sides turning on him.
I hope, anyway.

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 06/10/2024 15:34

I think he balances it all too carefully and cleverly. I suspect that he'll only go when he starts to physically or mentally weaken just a bit too far.

Due to the growing threat from Russia, NATO plans to increase troop numbers by 250,000, according to a report from Welt. Leaked unpublished plans reveal that NATO countries agreed on the "minimum necessary potential" for defense against Russian aggression in spring 2024.
The documents suggest that the number of combat brigades will rise from 82 to 131, with each brigade consisting of about 5,000 troops. The number of "combat corps" will expand from 6 to 15, and division headquarters will increase from 24 to 38.
In addition, NATO plans to significantly boost its arsenal, including air defense systems and helicopters. Ground-based anti-aircraft installations will grow from 293 to 1,467, while the number of helicopters will increase from 90 to 104.
Welt highlights that the burden will be shared among the 32 NATO member countries, based on their "wealth" and population. For instance, Germany may be required to establish five to six additional combat brigades and assign personnel to a new combat corps.

Brent oil prices could surge to $150 per barrel if a full-scale war erupts in the Middle East, and rise by $20 if Israel targets Iran's energy infrastructure without further global repercussions, reports CNBC.

Authorities in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug of Russia have raised the one-time payment to contract soldiers of the Russian army to 2.2 million rubles ($23,000), reports "Vazhnie Istorii." Journalists calculated that with federal and municipal bonuses, contract soldiers now receive a total one-time payment of 2.75 million rubles ($29,000), the highest in Russia. MNtowers, hope you do not hide this post and then not restore it.

https://www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-october-6-2024

Key Takeaways:

  • Russian forces have reportedly lost at least five divisions’ worth of armored vehicles and tanks in Pokrovsk Raion since beginning their offensive operation to seize Avdiivka in October 2023 and during intensified Russian offensive operations in western Donetsk Oblast in Summer 2024.
  • The Russian military command may not be willing or able to accept the current scale and rate of vehicle loss in the coming months and years given the constraints in Russia's defense industrial production, limits to Russia’s Soviet-era vehicle stockpiles, and the Russian military's failure to achieve operationally significant territorial advances through mechanized maneuver.
  • Ukrainian officials continue to document and prosecute Russian war crimes committed against Ukrainian forces.
  • Russian authorities reportedly arrested the administrator of the Russian Telegram channel Thirteenth, who has previously criticized the Kremlin and Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD), on October 5.
  • Russian forces recently advanced southeast of Pokrovsk.

Russia is secretly behind Israel’s attacks on Iran so as to drive up the price of oil to restore the Russian economy.

I wonder if Russia's playing both sides. There's zero doubt they're working closely with Iran and ofc the Syrian govt, but for a long time Netanyahu and Putin were 'close friends' and I suspect Netanyahu is fighting for his political survival and will use any methods necessary at all, including dealing with Putin under the table, on a personal level and perhaps more.

There is quite a bit in the Israeli press about how much Russian weaponry they are finding Hezbollah had - ie the stuff literally sitting on the Israel's northern border to be used for a ground invasion Hamas style. I think attitudes to Russia have hardened significantly even amongst those who previously were more pro/ambivalent. Even if Netanyahu were instinctively going against this (and to be honest, I would doubt it, more likely to be feeling betrayed), I doubt he could get away with much that is pro Russian given the current mood. Lots of people suggesting that the Russian weapons they have captured should be given to Ukraine, although it is logistically easier to destroy it than to gather it up and try and put it on a boat or plane or something, so don't know that this sentiment is likely to result in anything in practice, but I think the sentiment towards Russia has hardened dramatically over the last couple of weeks (even more than before and it has been hardening since October 7th).

It means absolutely nothing until the various governments allocate the money to do this. I am deeply skeptical that most will follow through on it.

There is quite a bit in the Israeli press about how much Russian weaponry they are finding Hezbollah had - ie the stuff literally sitting on the Israel's northern border to be used for a ground invasion Hamas style.

Huge amounts of Russian weaponry is available on the black market. Some are sold with government permission, and some are simply looted from the Russian army and sold. Viktor Bout, the Russian arms dealer who was swapped from Brittany Griner in 2022, is back in the news for selling small arms to the Houthis.

UNITED24 Media Telegram Highlights

The European Union is planning to revise its military support system for Ukraine due to Hungary’s veto, which is aligned with its pro-Russian stance, reports RMF24.
According to the newspaper, EU ambassadors are expected to reach a political agreement on Wednesday regarding the provision of €50 billion in aid to Ukraine, sourced from the frozen assets of the Russian Federation. The draft decision suggests that most of the funds will be allocated to programs financed through the EU budget, with only 5% directed toward the European Peace Facility, a fund that has occasionally been used to finance arms for Ukraine.
This adjustment is designed to bypass Hungary's veto, as the decision will no longer require unanimous approval from all EU member states.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced that Ukraine will not extend its gas transit agreement with the Russian Federation once it expires.

Ukraine has received its first F-16 fighter jet from the Netherlands, with the remaining 24 aircraft to be delivered soon, according to Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans [The others were flying a lot on saturday and sunday. Odd to think that Ukrainian pilots were overhead and will be flying them soon in Ukraine in combat].

Ukrainian military intelligence (GUR) reported a successful operation that left the Russian Baltic Fleet minesweeper "Aleksandr Obukhov" in need of long-term repairs. The ship, stationed in Baltiysk, was preparing for combat duty when a mysterious hole appeared in its gas pipe, allowing water to enter the engine. As a result, the minesweeper is now undergoing major repairs.
The damaged M-503 engine, essential for the vessel's operation, is difficult to source and expensive to repair, complicating the restoration process for the Russian fleet.

Ukrainian hackers carried out a large-scale cyberattack on Russian state television channels, including "Russia 1" and "Russia 24," as a "birthday gift" to Putin. As a result, more than 20 major propaganda channels, including "Russia Culture" and RTR "Planeta," have stopped broadcasting both online and on traditional television.

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that, as head of the government, he would never consent to Ukraine joining NATO. He argued that Ukraine's accession to the Alliance could serve as a catalyst for triggering a Third World War.

πŸ‡³πŸ‡± Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans made an unannounced visit to Kharkiv, Ukraine.
πŸ’¬ β€œI witnessed the devastating impact of Russian shellingβ€”destroyed homes, power outages, and children forced to study in bunkers. The only way Ukraine can protect itself is by keeping Russia at a greater distance,” the minister stated.

Among the wreckage of the Russian S-70 Okhotnik UAV, which was shot down yesterday, the remains of the latest UMPB D-30SN ammunition were discovered.
This 300-mm universal munition can be launched from both aircraft and MLRS. It now appears that it can also be deployed via UAVs, adding a new dimension to its capabilities.

Ukrainian border guards shot down a Gerbera foam UAV during the night.
The enemy uses these inexpensive drones, made from basic materials like foam and sticks, without combat units to exhaust Ukrainian air defense systems and divert attention from more dangerous β€œShahed” attack drones.

Russian forces executed three Ukrainian soldiers at close range after they had surrendered in the town of New York, Donetsk region, according to reports from the β€œAzov” unit.
The brutal act was captured by a drone, documenting the war crime committed by the invaders.

These are the people just under 50% of Americans think are fit to lead the free world against Putin and his ilk. Fucking hell what hope so we have 😩

Personally, I don't think we should be expecting the USA to lead the free world.

What we need is European politicians to wake up and start creating a wholly European deterrent. It seems to escape our leaders that there are only 2,000 - 3,000 miles of road between Russia, Iran, North Korea and China which with the right will could be traversed with various armies to attack Europe and this is easier when the Arctic becomes accessible year round. We would not be able to defend ourselves under the current spending plans. We also need an independent nuclear deterrent.

But instead we are wasting money making sure our aircraft and ships are greener and still saying there is no more money despite embedding the pensions triple lock. Every politician who sits back and does nothing must shoulder this blame. We are like frogs waiting to be boiled. The silver lining of a Trump victory is that our arses might get kicked out of inaction. Where I was against a Trump victory I am more ambivalent now.

The first shipments, consisting mostly of AK-74 Kalashnikov rifles, could take place as early as October. It is also possible that Houthis may receive anti-ship or anti-aircraft missiles from Russia in the future. If this happens, it would complicate efforts for U.S. forces to defend against Houthi attacks in the Red Sea.

Fescue · 07/10/2024 16:13

I am not so sure it would be a catastrophe. He is a chump for sure, but he will be standing on the shoulders of quieter giants beneath him who will ensure no colossal mistakes are made. But it would shake Europe up which is desperately needed on defence. The tortoise and the hare springs to mind. The UK in particular has fallen far back in military defence capability. I fear we will lose the know-how within 10 years. When its gone, it wont come back.
