I keep seeing talk of Russia going toe to toe with the US in support of Iran. Maybe I’m naive but I just can’t see it given the lengths they’ve gone to and the excuses they’ve concocted to weasel out of their red lines in Ukraine, when that’s clearly where their priority is.

notimagain · 03/10/2024 20:00

@MissConductUS

my understanding is that it depends on the flight profile of the missile and the geometry of the intercept.

It’s all a compromise with a lot of variables involved…

As far an intercepting missile goes the one thing that is usually not desirable from an energy point of view is a large crossing angle since that means the missile has to pull a lot of lead to aim ahead of the target and then has a bit of a chase on it’s hands….which may be beyond it’s capabilities especially if the inbound is traveling at very high speed.

In many ways a head on engagement is the one that is actually preferable - no aiming off/lead required…but as you say that only works if the intercepting missile can detect the target after launch.

There is also a problem that if the closing speed is really high you need to launch quickly enough to get the missile out to it’s minimum arming distance (there usually is one because you don’t want the warhead going bang as it leaves the tube) and then you need very fast fusing if the inbound is really fast to ensure the inbound doesn’t whistle past before the B in Bang.

All boils down to the probable issue the SAM 400 sites might well be having is by the time they are detecting the inbound it is inside minimum range….

Where are you seeing such talk? It strikes me as complete nonsense. Russia can barely cope with fighting the Ukrainians. The last thing they want is a fight with the US. And Iran is just an ally of convenience. They don't actually give a rat's ass about the Iranians.

And they're already paying a high price for being in the area. Israel has reportedly attacked a Russian air base in Syria.

Claims Swirl Around Israeli Strikes Very Near Russia’s Air Base In Syria - Targeting weapons bound for Hezbollah, Israel appears to have struck very close or within Russia’s Khmeimim Air Base in Syria.

What's happening now in the Middle East is bad news for Russia. They're not going to make it worse.

This is a red flag for me. In places where prison labour is an important part of the local workforce, historically it's not unknown for local sheriffs to detain people purely to meet demand for that labour.

This happened in Solzhenitsyn's time.

Thanks, I didn't know Russia was one of the places it had already happened – though I'm absolutely not surprised.

It ticks all the boxes for prison labour and figleaf judicial system hand-in-glove with powerful beneficiaries of that labour (in this case the state).

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 04/10/2024 10:38

They actually had quotes for people to arrest and arrested some people who were literally only walking past the police station, according to what he said in the Gulag Archipelago.

We have this issue with antitank missiles as well. The Javelin needs to travel 213 feet from the launcher to arm, so it's not well suited for close combat. There's another, much older antitank missile that's still in use called the M72 LAW (Light Antitank Weapon) that has an arming distance of just 33 feet. We had them in the army, but for some reason, the USMC just adored them.

They weigh only about six pounds, so they're easy for the troops to carry. The warhead is too small to do much damage to a modern tank unless you hit it in a vulnerable spot, but they work a treat against lighter combat vehicles and enemy defensive positions. I know the Ukrainians have received them and asked for more, so I'm glad that they're finding good use against the Russians.

According to Der Spiegel, Ukraine could potentially strike 261 military facilities within Russia if granted permission to use long-range missiles on Russian territory. The identified targets include major weapons depots and military bases.
The article explains that the calculation is based on the range of Storm Shadow missiles, which can fly up to 250 km.

Key Takeaways:

  • Ukrainian forces struck a fuel storage facility in Anna, Voronezh Oblast on the night of October 3 to 4.
  • Russian forces recently advanced in Vovchansk, near Kreminna, Toretsk, Pokrovsk, and Donetsk City.

www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-october-3-2024

Key Takeaways:

  • The Russian offensive effort in eastern Ukraine that began in fall 2023 continues to produce gradual Russian tactical gains in specific sectors of the front, but operationally significant gains will likely continue to elude Russian forces.
  • Ukrainian forces are conducting an effective defense in depth along the frontline, inflicting significant losses upon Russian forces while slowly giving ground but preventing the Russian military from making more rapid gains on the battlefield.
  • Ukrainian forces do face serious operational challenges and constraints, which are providing Russian forces with opportunities to pursue tactically significant gains.
  • Russian forces do not have the available manpower and materiel to continue intensified offensive efforts indefinitely, however, and current Russian offensive operations in eastern Ukraine will likely culminate in the coming months, if not weeks, as Ukrainian officials and ISW have previously assessed.
  • Russian forces have recently made notable tactical gains but have not demonstrated a capacity to seize operationally significant objectives.
  • The Russian military command prepared the ongoing Russian summer 2024 offensive operation for months in advance and accumulated operational reserves and resources for the operation that the recent months of attritional fighting have likely heavily degraded.
  • Russian forces have reportedly committed a significant portion of their intended operational reserves to offensive operations in Donetsk and northern Kharkiv oblasts, indicating that the Russian military command may have prioritized forming operational reserves to support offensive operations in priority sectors of the frontline over developing theater-wide strategic reserves for the entire offensive campaign in Ukraine.
  • The Russian military command is continuing to prioritize offensive operations in priority sectors of the frontline over long-term planning for Russia's theater-wide campaign in Ukraine, but the Ukrainian incursion into Kursk Oblast appears to have significantly complicated the development of Russia's operational reserves.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin appears to be using the "Time of Heroes" veteran support program to militarize regional and local government administrations and further solidify a pro-war ideology into the Russian state and society.
  • Russian authorities continue to arrest Russian officials on charges related to mismanagement and corruption within the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD).
  • Strikes reportedly targeted an ammunition depot near Russia's Hmeimim Airbase in Latakia Province, Syria overnight on October 2 to 3.
  • Russian forces recently advanced south of Siversk and east and southeast of Pokrovsk in Donetsk Oblast.
  • Russian authorities continue to nationalize Russian enterprises for the benefit of the federal government.

Kyiv Post

In one of the most epic shoot down videos of the year, what was initially said to be a Russian Su-25, the jet downed this afternoon over Donetsk is now said to be either an Su-57 or an S-70, Russia's most advanced unmanned $15,000,000 drone.

Russia is secretly behind Israel’s attacks on Iran so as to drive up the price of oil to restore the Russian economy.

I wonder if Russia's playing both sides. There's zero doubt they're working closely with Iran and ofc the Syrian govt, but for a long time Netanyahu and Putin were 'close friends' and I suspect Netanyahu is fighting for his political survival and will use any methods necessary at all, including dealing with Putin under the table, on a personal level and perhaps more.

I didn’t know that Netanyahu and Putin were comrades but there’s an affinity between dictators so not surprising. Putin is probably playing multiple sides.

I used to think he was laughing when the million people up and walked out of Syria into Europe destabilising European politic with Russian support being instrumental for Assad. Putin has his fingers in so many geopolitical pies.

Putin also entertained Hamas in Moscow to discuss the Russian hostages in Gaza
