What one item makes your life a bit nicer?

I have just read a thread about making life easier. It's always meal planning and household appliances.

Anyway it got me thinking whilst having a shower... I love my Bluetooth shower speaker. Being able to listen to my own music in the shower is great.

I don't need it. I can obviously live without it but I really love that little thing!

I also have dogs. I think it's a given that animals and children bring joy.

You have to recommend something to make life nicer.

What are you choosing? Smile

'The Literary Review' on subscription. Utterly brilliant writing. My John Rocha for Waterford Crystal wine glasses: I could gaze at them forever.

SheUltra · 10/08/2024 22:19

I've heard of the kindle clicker. I might investigate.

I have one of those little bean bags the kindle sits in so I bet it's nice to have a clicker so you can be hands free?

I started the thread not because I wanted recommendations but because it's just lovely hearing how other people find their joy.

I can't craft to save my life but the way the pp wrote about their craft set up just sounds brilliant.

I'd love a conservatory though. Definitely not achievable in this house but again love hearing the joy it brings to others.

Still don't need to hear about family or animals as they aren't items

Being out of a care home after 20 months and moving into my own place on Sunday. My bed is arriving tomorrow, an ottoman with all the storage underneath to keep stuff out of the way. No clutter in the bedroom, walk-in wardrobe/dressing room next door (okay, so it's just a teeny tiny room that I didn't know what else to do with, and also a conservatory, I say conservatory, but a decent space that I can use as a craft room and as somewhere to clean down the (as yet to get) rescue dogs when they come in inevitably wet and a bit mucky after a good walk.

Just getting out of the hell hole that is a care home after so long, honestly a cardboard box under a railway bridge would make life a bit (lot) nicer. I'm not even that bothered about "stuff" anymore as 99.9% of mine has been disposed of when my ex-family members thought I was going to kick the bucket and I wouldn't be around to mind!

I moved 250+ miles to get away from toxic family members and start my life again, it is the best thing I could have done and has made my life a helluva lot nicer in so many ways.

Wishing you the most loveliest new life!

Im sure you’ll be fine in your new home with some sweet rescue dogs… All the best to you 💐

My ice maker. I like lots and lots of ice in my drinks. It makes me very happy 🧊🧊🧊🧊

Seconding this, I got one last week and it might be my favourite kitchen purchase of all time!! I use ice all year round and I think it's going to change my life 😁

My Conservatory. It’s so relaxing to sit in. I close it off to the rest of the house and just sit and watch the birds in the garden or read or close my eyes and listen to some soothing music. Our old one was replaced last year and the new one is 100% better. Because of the improvements in glass insulation and a better ventilation system, it can be used all year round. I love it!

2nd to that, my log burner……( how to make yourself unpopular on Mumsnet)

Come and join us 4x4 drivers … we can be unpopular together! 😁

A tugless swimming suit from Lands End. Finally a costume that's long enough, does not insert itself into my crotch, dries easily and is damned comfy to wear.

Gousto boxes. We have one a fortnight and not having to make the constant mental effort to work out what's for dinner and whether I have the right ingredients is blissful

ComeAgainPlease · 10/08/2024 22:27

Fresh clean bedding dried on the line and ideally put on the bed by someone else so it's cool and relaxing to get into (rather than me remembering at bedtime that I've still got to make the blinking bed and the battle to toss the mattress, find the correct edges of the fitted sheet, decide which are my pillows and which are his, and then war with the duvet leaving me hot and bothered)

Things have obviously been very hard for you recently, I am glad things are getting better .
Onwards and upwards, I wish you all the best for the future.

I love really nice soap. Has to be rounded at the corners.
Also my walk in shower. I'd never have any other.
And chocolate of course.

My automatic Volvo XC60 SUV. Big,safe, tank. I love it.

I’ve been looking at a new car and it and the xc90 have such good safety records they are swaying me I test drove one and it leaves my car standing it’s so so nice to drive!

Interesting how many of these are about simple physical pleasures - a good mattress, nice bedding, body lotion, good coffee etc.

Definitely putting linen sheets on the list.

I got mine for a bargain price on the TK Maxx web site.

pod100 · 10/08/2024 22:40

I’m 7 pages in and not seen a mention yet, but for me, a huge game changer has been my robot lawnmower. I pop it on a couple of times a week while I’m working and my grass is so neat! It might sound silly but my lawn needing mowing used to really stress me out as the grass grew so fast and since getting it for a present, I have to say this summer has been amazing! Plus the trimmings just absorb back into the soil so I hardly ever fill my green bin now

hilariousnamehere · 10/08/2024 22:52

Read whole thread and come back with my actual list:

Smallish stuff:

  • Ice maker
  • Sodastream & pepsi max syrup
  • Massive garage freezer
  • Heated throws
  • Air con in my studio
  • Fountain pens & inks
  • Ridiculous patchwork velvet sofa
  • Brass key/hare bottle opener from Anthropologie which makes me smile every time I look at it
  • crushed oreo pieces from the wholesaler and a decent stick blender so I can make my own Oreo milkshakes at home whenever I fancy
  • colourful ribbons for my typewriters

Big stuff:

  • My old sporty car was my favourite thing on the planet and I still miss her (hello other people who name their cars)
  • my studio - it's at the bottom of the village, is photo studio, craft space/workshop and office combined, and I am absolutely in love with it and spend a lot of time there even when I'm not working
  • my kayak, although it's been sadly underused this year and last because life. But nothing better than a hot choc and biscuit stop in your boat somewhere pretty on a river!

Obvious stuff:

  • my cats, and recently their sudden love of the tiny cat bed I bought and put on the landing a few years ago - it is just the happiest thing watching them on it! (Sorry op, cats aren't items but the bed is, does that count?!)

If I had to pick one thing that wasn't the cats, it would be my studio, and one thing that's actually practical, the ice maker!

Lovely thread 💙

My ebike. I can cycle to work. I take a greener, off road route and it's just such a wonderful way to get up in the morning, cycling through the birds song and the trees.

40andprettybored · 10/08/2024 22:58

A small kettle and a mini fridge for my bedroom. Game changer.

My electric bike and kiddie bike trailer! I grew up somewhere where everyone cycles and I no longer get homesick now. The kids love it too😍

I love my IPad. My whole life is on it. I enjoy photography, travelling and dressmaking. My sewing patterns and photos of our travels, my dogs, Siamese Cats and family are all on it. It also contains my diary, all my contacts and lots of apps that give me pleasure - Readly for magazines and Newspapers, Audible for audiobooks, YouTube premium for ‘everything’ with no ads, LFC Go and Sky Go for football. I use lots of these on my IPhone, but if I have to pick one thing, my iPad does more 🙂

Sickoffamilydrama · 10/08/2024 23:17

Not a little thing but we definitely bought a house in the right location it's another that pretty market town but with great road and train links. We can walk into town easily but the best but is we back onto a nature reserve so our garden is secluded and doesn't feel like it's near a town.

DD & DH bought me bird feeders for my birthday including a window feeder this year which are probably the best present I've had and make me so happy watching the multitude of birds feeding.

Today we had sparrows, Coal, Blue & Great Tits, Green finches, Blackbird, Robin, Ringed Dove, Pigeon and Magpies. Plus the cheeky squirrels 🐿️

RosyappleA · 10/08/2024 23:23

A nice floral, light coloured, big enough, thick rug for the living room that I plan on getting professionally cleaned at least once a year. It has made the place look less like an office, so warm and inviting.

Parkly · 10/08/2024 23:24

Please can we have links?!

I want to know which comfy mattresses, which woolly heated throws, which electric fireplaces etc!

My current thing is houseplants. I moved last year and never really had them in the old house. Here I have loads of them, and really enjoy watering and tending to them. Now there's a sentence I never thought I'd write!

Pudmyboy · 10/08/2024 23:24

Is anyone else reading this thread and writing a shopping list🤣
@TheNuthatch it's taking me forever to read the thread as I keep going off to look up stuff that I've never heard of and didn't know I couldn't live without!😂
