58

No!

Isthisreasonable · 09/08/2024 12:56

61 yes, flat on the floor

MavisPennies · 09/08/2024 13:00

46 and no, never been able to do it even when doing regular yoga (usually I do irregular yoga). My calf muscles are quite tight and my legs are quite long, that's my excuse anyway.
I can do reverse prayer (mentioned up thread) and pigeon pose though. All bodies are different!

KevinDeBrioche · 09/08/2024 13:09

45 and yes, easily, palms flat. Can also catch my own ankles in a backbend (with help from a teacher)

Yoga ftw.

DuesToTheDirt · 09/08/2024 13:19

It's just one of those things I think, your body can do it or it can't, regardless of age. I always wanted to do the splits (back in the days of Olga Korbutt), but no amount of practice got me there.

MiddleAgedDread · 09/08/2024 13:29

47 and pretty fit but can only just touch mine with my finger tips. I'm not very flexible and have tight hamstrings and lower back!

LightDrizzle · 09/08/2024 13:31

Mid fifties and easily and I’m very unfit at the mo and had spinal surgery 18 months ago.

Bloody hell, I had to check that this means what I thought! No way I could ever have done that, even in my super fit & flexible phases. Too much rib cage between the shoulders. Or not enough arm, or something 😳

Retired Occupational Therapist here. To do this you actually have to be careful. The lady in the image has what is called "wing scapula" which can affect the stability of the shoulder joint. Lower down on the same link is an image of it being done "properly" where the scapula stays laid flat to the ribcage and slides against it in rotation to achieve the posture. Here's Tony Holland showing an extreme of wing scapula.

59 and can almost get my head to the floor.

EBearhug · 09/08/2024 14:01

My yoga teacher once showed us x-rays of different pelvises to explain why some people will never be able to reach the full expression on certain positions (not with out breaking bones, anyway.) Regular practice will improve flexibility by stretching muscles and improving your core for balance, but there is a limit to what you can do when solid structure is a physical limit.

Ooh, never heard of this, but just tried it and I can do it. Go me! (mid 50s). Of course, I'd rather achieve something that's actually useful, but hey ho. Grin

OVienna · 09/08/2024 14:07

53, nearly 54, can touch the floor in front of me.

BigDahliaFan · 09/08/2024 14:36

I'm not a million miles away from a reverse prayer...but a million miles away from sitting crossed legs on the floor...

I can touch my toes if I bend my knees....

FlipFlops4Me · 09/08/2024 14:50

67 and I can put my hands flat on the floor

newtb · 09/08/2024 16:23

68 and no.

Sailorchick14 · 09/08/2024 17:00

44 and yes.

I still describe myself as tin man though as not very flexible in other ways and fairly knackered. Ongoing hip issue, recent securing knee injury and tendonitis in my wrist. Really missing the gym and sailing at moment 😪

pgtips2 · 09/08/2024 17:07

Ha ha yes, aged 54 and can put them flat to the floor.
But I think it's due to my short legs. ;)

CatsMother66 · 09/08/2024 17:28

It’s my Mum’s “party trick” and she’s 90.

DeanElderberry · 09/08/2024 17:33

Mid 60s, fat and not terribly fit, no trouble touching my eyes and ears and mouth and nose; head, shoulders, knees and . . . TOES!

(local village school had a visit from the Garda band a few months back, and I needed to meet the Parish priest about something, so we went to that and had some fun as well as getting our business done)

fussychica · 09/08/2024 17:41

Nearly 68 yes and can put hands flat on the floor. Do 20 reps every morning to stop creaking.

WhosEmmaaaaaaa · 09/08/2024 17:41

AtomicBlondeRose · 08/08/2024 18:16

44, and I can put my hands flat on the ground in front of me!

Me too
60

MissingMoominMamma · 09/08/2024 17:43

58, yes, but not flat hands.

KittyMcKitty · 09/08/2024 17:44

58 and yes and can put hands flat. I can also put my legs over my head and behind my neck (although it is getting harder)

StressyDepressy · 09/08/2024 17:50

45

On a good day I can wave at them

OnGoldenPond · 10/08/2024 15:46

58 and can put hands flat on floor. It is one of the diagnostic signs of hyper mobility. Stiff as a board elsewhere though! Grin

DickEmery · 15/08/2024 08:56

I've always been able to put hands flat even when otherwise unfit and/or fat. I was also able to easily do the splits when younger although I haven't tried for years now. Must be some strange body quirk. I have short arms for my height so it's not that. In itself it's not particularly useful.
