What's going to happen to everyone arrested?

peebles32 · 06/08/2024 18:00

So there have been 400 arrests. Courts are open longer and these idiots are been dealt with.
However, what will happen to them? I don't know much about the court system but I know there aren't enough places in prisons.
Will they get community service, fines etc

It obviously has to be tough to be a deterrent from others doing it. Will these people actually care if they have a criminal record?

I mean they just can't arrest everyone so how are they going to stop people rioting?

I have wondered this. There can’t be the space to house them all.

AmusedMaker · 06/08/2024 18:01

I thought our prisons were full?

AgnesX · 06/08/2024 18:02

They'll turf out the others make way.

Wonder if the Rwanda plan could be resurrected for these people 🤔

Doggymummar · 06/08/2024 18:03

They will have to be 4 to a cell then won't they? They don't deserve to be in comfort. That Bibby Stockholm has room

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 06/08/2024 18:06

I was going to suggest Bibby Stockholm. I think it's not in use at the moment.

Exactly? So I just don't know what can be done!

Weren't the government talking about releasing people from prisons early because they're so overcrowded?

Wish they would just tell the truth instead of constantly gaslighting us

frozendaisy · 06/08/2024 18:09

Tagged, fined, community service, passports removed.

As long as the penalty is on their record, should make their car insurance higher and more difficult to find any decent employment.

SallyWD · 06/08/2024 18:09

Apparently they're all being kept in custody until sentencing in early Sept. They fave lengthy sentences of around 5 years. I have to say tgosd news is very pleasing to me and I hope it deters others from beating up innocent people and smashing up buildings.

AdiLane · 06/08/2024 18:10

BBC said at least 500 prison places have been created.

Even those charged with inciting racial hatred online ( in this case Facebook) are being remanded in prison.

Wellfuckmesideways · 06/08/2024 18:11

It looks like they are being remanded in custody until the trial dates so whatever the sentence, they will have some jail time and if they are not turning up for work then hopefully they will lose their jobs as well. Stupid fucking idiots.

I imagine there'll be a lot of prisoners approaching the end of their sentence (for non-violent crimes) anticipating an early release.

AdiLane · 06/08/2024 18:14

The government are bringing into action new cells. Googling shows that the government had this programme in place in 2022. I suppose these new cells were ready or nearly ready and can be brought into use, given the urgent need.

Extra cells to open at prison near Cambridgeshire as rioting continues

Hundreds of people have been arrested following incidents across England and Northern Ireland

AmusedMaker · 06/08/2024 18:15

Well the government will never be able to say ‘our prisions are full’ if they’ve been able to find 500 places within a few days.

Iknowjadon · 06/08/2024 18:17

I love seeing their ugly mugs on the TV, keep that coming every night

Seems a week or so ago ‘currently full’ which they were at that point.

New cells nearly ready but not in use.

Given the emergency that this is, speed up completion - and therefore new cells ‘completed and in action’

IncompleteSenten · 06/08/2024 18:19

Fuck all, probably.
It'll all be quietly swept under the carpet. Maybe they'll get a fine they'll simply not pay or community service they'll not turn up for but it will just be expected we'll all forget about it and nobody will have to actually do anything.

peebles32 · 06/08/2024 18:21

Even these 500 cells are going to be full. I am so pleased they are taking a tough stance on this and staying in custody.

No idea

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 06/08/2024 18:22

And all the time 'Tommy Robinson' is lying on a beach in Ayia Napa, Farage is probably in a pub

Not at all. They're facing very lengthy sentences - depending on whether it's criminal damage, inciting racial hatred, rioting. These sentences range from 5 to 10 years. Good.

drspouse · 06/08/2024 18:28

There aren't enough barristers so I have no idea how courts are going to run later.

BustingBaoBun · 06/08/2024 18:28

Yes, prison. And this will affect them greatly. It's not long until a European visa is going to happen, that might affect travel, it certainly will with the US Esta. Jobs will be impacted when you have to declare a criminal record.

The young kids who were as young as 11 will forever have a criminal record.

Fuck all, probably

Why do you think that when rioters were handed sentences totally 1,800 years in the 2011 riots.

tommika · 06/08/2024 18:30

Nationally, prisons are above their ‘normal capacity’ but within their maximum ‘operational capacity’

That does mean that there is space, but cells are being shared above the capacity that they should be, and bring in more issues for staff to deal with
There is also a high level of those on remand pending their cases going through court.

The current arrests will be fairly simple to process, some will get further custodials, some will be suspended sentences (and some will come out not proven guilty)
As long as those who come out behave then they can stay out, but 400 are less than 1/2 of a percent of the England & Wales prison population they won’t break the prison system

https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/will-prisons-run-out-of-space/

Usable Operational Capacity of the estate is the sum of all establishments’ operational capacity less 2000 places. This is known as the operating margin and reflects the constraints imposed by the need to provide separate accommodation for different classes of prisoner i.e. by sex, age, security category, conviction status, single cell risk assessment and also owing to geographical distribution.
^^
The certified normal accommodation (CNA) threshold is the number of prisoners a prison can hold without being crowded. In-use CNA is the number of prisoners a prison can hold in in-use cells without being crowded. This is otherwise known as uncrowded capacity.
