What's going to happen to everyone arrested?

peebles32 · 06/08/2024 18:00

So there have been 400 arrests. Courts are open longer and these idiots are been dealt with.
However, what will happen to them? I don't know much about the court system but I know there aren't enough places in prisons.
Will they get community service, fines etc

It obviously has to be tough to be a deterrent from others doing it. Will these people actually care if they have a criminal record?

I mean they just can't arrest everyone so how are they going to stop people rioting?

Hopefully have their faces plastered over the news so they will be sacked from any jobs they have and everyone who knows them will know that they are a racist violent thug with a police record stating so too!

missfliss · 06/08/2024 19:21

I'd love the Bibby Stockholm to be reopened for them ...

Slap on the wrist

HMPworker · 06/08/2024 19:25

I imagine prison works teams will be working hard to get a lot of offline cells back into working order as well as the new places that are being created.

Don't forget with the temporary closure of HMP Dartmoor, the prison service lost over 600 spaces AND had to find places to house them all. That added to the pressure of lack of spaces.

Slap on the wrist

Why do you say that when those who rioted in 2011 (under Starmer as DPP) were sentenced to over 1,800 years

StMarieforme · 06/08/2024 19:27

AmusedMaker · 06/08/2024 18:15

Well the government will never be able to say ‘our prisions are full’ if they’ve been able to find 500 places within a few days.

They're finding a solution to remanding these racist thugs and you have a go at the government? Really? That's your takeaway from this.

Good grief.

OlympicsFanGirl · 06/08/2024 19:31

If convicted of violence or terrorism then jail.

Biggaybear · 06/08/2024 19:46

Lots will plead not guilty & will be up to the police to show evidence of their misdoings. Expect quite a few to be discharged or found not guilty.

Coconutter24 · 06/08/2024 19:47

Early releases planned in September

Fifferfefferfeff · 06/08/2024 19:52

Well, planning to create a traffic jam means a 5 year prison sentence, so, presumably, actually creating or participating in a riot will mean a much, much longer prison sentence.

Thevelvelletes · 06/08/2024 20:17

The one's that get done for wilful fire raising are fucked...
That's a bit more than a breach of the peace charge.

wheretoyougonow · 06/08/2024 20:20

If they all go to prison, who is going to fill the 500 jobs they all leave behind whilst they are behind bars? Their employers have already been very generous letting them have time off to riot. Oh, hang on a minute....

peebles32 · 06/08/2024 20:22

itsgettingweird · 06/08/2024 19:19

They have repurposed somewhere (can't remember where) and created something like 500 spaces for these rioters specifically.

So they'll be held on remand or bailed.

Then found innocent or jailed.

Most have just realised that in fact there are spaces - that's why they are crying in court.

Good!! Crocodile tears no doubt!

And all the time 'Tommy Robinson' is lying on a beach in Ayia Napa, Farage is probably in a pub

Well Robinson apparently is the son of Irish immigrants so his British passport & citizenship can be revoked for starters. He can fuck off back to Ireland no disrespect to Ireland, just my sympathies if they'll have him. Actually Ireland should tell him he's not welcome as well & then he can be stateless in limbo just like Shamima Begum.

Yep!
And I hope this will be followed on too.
After all those laws (that I actually find awful tbh) were brought because some people had issues with the traffic jams. But no one has ever said it was ONLY about climate change activists.
Let’s follow the law.
And find the people who have organised those riots (the ones who called to meet up at x time or the one who offered £500 for each police car burnt) even if they weren’t there and punish them the same way.

Edited

The police in Cyprus have also said they are ready to arrest him as soon as Britain asks.

AzureBlue99 · 06/08/2024 20:36

Lawrence Fox is in Ireland. He should be arrested for inflammatory tweets. Or X's whatever they are called.

Cyprus should tell him to f off in case he starts trouble over there. The home office should cancel his citizenship and passport pronto. This is such a golden opportunity to make a proper example of him. If they did it for Shamima Begum why not for TR?

JJathome · 06/08/2024 20:48

I hope they give them long sentences, it’s a deterrent. Stop the other thugs going out and doing the same.

Weren't the government talking about releasing people from prisons early because they're so overcrowded?

Wish they would just tell the truth instead of constantly gaslighting us

It was a Tory policy actually. Well publicised before the GE. No one is gaslighting anyone.

Cattenberg · 06/08/2024 21:06

I’m not surprised that the police are throwing the book at the rioters. Some of them are in for a shock. Back when the 2011 riots happened, I knew a police officer who said they were going to nick the rioters out of their beds when they were least expecting it.

I was taken aback by the length of some of the sentences back then. I remember one woman who hadn’t taken part in the riots but was given a looted pair of kids’ shorts for her son. She was sentenced to five months in prison (although later freed on appeal). Meanwhile, two young men in Chester were each sentenced to four years in prison for trying (unsuccessfully) to organise disturbances via Facebook pages.

DuesToTheDirt · 06/08/2024 21:14

Maybe they'll make a bit of space in the prisons by deciding that environmental protesters shouldn't be locked up for 5 years after all.

Crikeyalmighty · 06/08/2024 19:17

There were some very stiff sentences back in 2011 and Starmer was director of public prosecutions then.

Britain's most senior prosecutor has questioned whether heavy sentences given to last summer's rioters worked as an effective deterrence, challenging the received wisdom from senior judges and politicians.

Most prosecutors – in contrast to Starmer – fully endorsed the sentencing approach by judges that saw rioters receive an average sentence of 16.8 months, making the penalties four and half times longer than the average jail term for similar offences in 2010.

Rapid riot prosecutions more important than long sentences, says Keir Starmer
