What's going to happen to everyone arrested?

peebles32 · 06/08/2024 18:00

So there have been 400 arrests. Courts are open longer and these idiots are been dealt with.
However, what will happen to them? I don't know much about the court system but I know there aren't enough places in prisons.
Will they get community service, fines etc

It obviously has to be tough to be a deterrent from others doing it. Will these people actually care if they have a criminal record?

I mean they just can't arrest everyone so how are they going to stop people rioting?

They were until magic happened and the government found extra space for them. Funny

The Tory government was going to let some prisoners out a bit early. Labour are carrying that on. I don't think that's happened yet. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think a lady on TV today said that's scheduled for September.

Choochoo21 · 06/08/2024 21:33

They’ve been trying to create more prison spaces by reopening closed prisons and letting people out early.

I hope these thugs get severe punishments.
There is absolutely no excuse to attack innocent people or the police and if they are seen to get away with it, it will only be worse next time.

The police need to be seen as having powers.

I just hope they don’t all get put in the same prisons.

Prisons are as difficult as the other inmates.
Being in one surrounded by the people who think like you, is going to be quite enjoyable and a breeding ground for these extremist views.

Imagine 300 of these put in 1 prison and an Asian or black prisoner is on the same wing as them.
It would be awful.

They should be separated and forced to live amongst the people who they claim to hate.

BobnLen · 06/08/2024 21:33

There could be thousands of them if there is all the online offenders as well

Moonshiners · 06/08/2024 21:36

Allthislovelygreen · 06/08/2024 18:07

Weren't the government talking about releasing people from prisons early because they're so overcrowded?

Wish they would just tell the truth instead of constantly gaslighting us

The prisons are full. Doesn't mean these twats won't end up there.

ProgressivePilgrim · 06/08/2024 21:38

If Just Stop Oil protesters were given 4/5 year sentences for planning peaceful protests; then the vile thugs who committed hate crime and acts of racially-motivated violence, including actually attempting to burn people alive (hotels set ablaze) surely should get at least 8 years?

KimKardashiansLostEarring · 06/08/2024 21:39

Send them to Rwanda hopefully.

BobnLen · 06/08/2024 21:40

They always seem to get let out after half a sentence anyway.

inaterribleplace · 06/08/2024 21:49

Costly police investigation, potentially lasting years before a court hearing, then a slap on the wrist with no real consequences.

Wrong

Thevelvelletes · 06/08/2024 22:04

As I said up thread wilful fire raising that's not going to be a slap on the wrist charge.

inaterribleplace · 06/08/2024 22:05

@SallyWD you are welcome to your opinion of course. Sadly this is my own personal experience of the CPS, but you crack on with your carefully constructed argument.

Not true.

They're being denied bail between hearing and sentencing. They don't mess around with this.

Edingril · 06/08/2024 22:08

AmusedMaker · 06/08/2024 18:15

Well the government will never be able to say ‘our prisions are full’ if they’ve been able to find 500 places within a few days.

Well the novel idea is people stopping committing crimes then there would be no need for them

Edingril · 06/08/2024 22:09

Their benefits should be stopped

The sheer number of offenders will prevent short sentences. The authorities will have another riot on their hands if they're seen to be lenient towards white rioters. Particularly as Anjem Chowdhury the radical preacher was jailed for life recently for inciting violence.

The authorities can't be seen to be meting out two tier justice & differentiating between hard line Islamist & far right extremists. Both sets of hardliners need to be treated exactly the same.

There aren't enough barristers so I have no idea how courts are going to run later.

I didn't think they believe we should have defence barristers. Haven't they been vilifying Keir Starmer for defending criminals?

I bet those arrested won't want to face justice without one.

Namechangeforthis88 · 06/08/2024 22:35

Last time we had this they used police cells for remand. DH got loads of overtime. The conditions are absolutely horrendous compared to remand in prison. Literally just sitting in an empty room. In prison you'd get a telly in cell, time in the open air, most likely the odd game of pool and gym visit.

iwillgetbackupagain · 06/08/2024 22:39

They all deserve locking up.

Or at the absolute very least, doing gruelling community service for months on end repairing the mess they've made of the city they live in.

I saw a group of people doing community service /general maintenance in my local cemetery where I was visiting.
It was on one of the hottest days a couple of weeks ago. They were weeding, litter picking, cutting down hedges that were over grown, shifting shit around in wheelbarrows. They were at it for hours in unbearable heat. Fabulous.

If they are remanded in custody then their trial has to be within 6 months I think.

It seems like many of them so far are pleading guilty so no trial needed. Presumably they've been caught so obviously on camera/CCTV that even they can see it is pointless to plead not guilty. They will also get a slightly more lenient sentence for pleading guilty.

Crikeyalmighty · 06/08/2024 22:48

It's like the thugs going on about 2 tier policing - call
Me old fashioned but I don't hang around police or the crim fraternity enough to be regularly up to date on what kind of policing was happening in multiple places - These 'rioters'
on the other hand seem very up to date with police and court procedures at all times which makes me think for a lot of them it's not their first rodeo

LaurieFairyCake · 06/08/2024 23:02

The new government are working hard to create new prison places by repurposing for category c's

That means all these new ultra violent ones are going to do a fuck of a long time in a category A
LENGTHY prison sentenced for the LOT

WindsurfingDreams · 06/08/2024 23:03

Maybe we could send them to Rwanda?

Let them serve their sentences in a Rwandan jail, now that would be a smashing idea. You think you're dead hard lads, then off you trot let's see how hard you really are.

Oh yes so the Rwandan president can teach them how to behave
