What's going to happen to everyone arrested?

peebles32 · 06/08/2024 18:00

So there have been 400 arrests. Courts are open longer and these idiots are been dealt with.
However, what will happen to them? I don't know much about the court system but I know there aren't enough places in prisons.
Will they get community service, fines etc

It obviously has to be tough to be a deterrent from others doing it. Will these people actually care if they have a criminal record?

I mean they just can't arrest everyone so how are they going to stop people rioting?

Weren't prisoners being given tents on release if they no longer had a roof over their heads? Until the previous home secretary stopped this as being homeless was looked down on?

That is correct. No tents for you!

caringcarer · 07/08/2024 08:52

They should charge them the cost of any damage they have caused and cost of additional policing. Hitting them in their pocket hurts the most.

caringcarer · 07/08/2024 08:55

SallyWD · 06/08/2024 18:35

These are the sentences

Yet pedophiles and even those who murder someone get barely more. Everyone seems to be released half way through their sentence to make way for newer criminals. We should build more prisons and people who do serious crime should serve their full sentence.

I just saw that one person has been given a two month prison sentence for his part in the riots in Bolton I believe. It’s better than nothing, but two months is laughable.

I really think that these types of short sentences will be like a badge of honour to most of those who receive them, and I think will fuel their racist views further. I’m also very concerned about whom they will mix with in prisons, and with them so overcrowded, surely it’s inevitable that many of the rioters will end up being together in prison becoming further radicalised and even more of a danger when back on our streets.

Age 18, first offence, lives with grandparents. Those with previous convictions are being remanded for jury trials.

Yes it was criminal damage charged. It is very unusual to go to prison for criminal damage! And the fine was large. This case is not a violent one in law.

Their benefits should be stopped

Absolutely if any are on benefits they should be stopping immediately.

HeyTalkToMeGoose · 07/08/2024 09:07

What would stopping their benefits achieve?

They would then commit MORE crime. And let's be realistic, many of these will be parents with kids to support

peebles32 · 07/08/2024 09:08

Benefits stopped. Passports revoked. They should lose the privileges this country gives them. Community service to realise the impact their actions have on their own communities. I really hope this happens not just for the far right but anyone who is racist and violent.

Tagged, fined, community service, passports removed.

As long as the penalty is on their record, should make their car insurance higher and more difficult to find any decent employment.

I can’t imagine any of that would have much effect. Tags are a badge of honour, fines are paid back at 75p a week, theym probably can’t afford holidays

BobnLen · 07/08/2024 09:11

They won't be all poor and on benefits, though people like to think they are, a Tory councillor's wife has been arrested for something she put on social media.

HeyTalkToMeGoose · 07/08/2024 09:15

A lot are parents so benefits are supporting kids

It will be more theft for Greggs to deal with if they can't feed themselves

This is going to help them feel less disenfranchised is it? We need rehabilitation and something like prevent to de-radicalise.

Some very irresponsible politicians and political commentators definitely have a huge responsibility for this. They stirred up a lot of the hate. They say they condemn the riots, but they're partly responsible for them. Obviously Nigel Farage and co; but lots of the GB News crowd too. Douglas Murray (arch islamophobe and racist) springs to mind too. Some on Mumsnet love him because he's gender critical. But, just because you 'know what a woman is' doesn't mean you're not rabidly racist and just wrong about all sorts of other stuff.
I'd like to see some contrition from some of these people. Some acknowledgement that they've stoked the flames.
It reminds me of Ian Paisley during the NI troubles - he always said he condemned all terrorism; but loads of his loyal followers were involved with loyalist paramilitaries. His bigoted firey speeches definitely contributed, but he wouldn't admit it at the time. Fortunately he mellowed and just generally became much nicer nearer to the end of his life, so I guess there's hope for anyone!

These are exactly my worries too. I hope there are more serious social/professional consequences that will really negatively impact their lives and act as a strong deterrent to repeat their despicable behaviour.

If sex offenders aren’t being jailed I don’t see how rioters will be.

There have just been some other sentences given: Riots and disorder in the UK: Thousands of police ready amid fears of more protests - BBC News
One man given 3 years, another given 30 months and the other, almost two years. Good.

Police believe the situation is "manageable" as they brace for a potential 30 more gatherings on Wednesday.

Loads of sentences have already been handed down. I've just linked an article on another thread... three of the Liverpool rioters - 3 years, 2.5 years, 18 months.
There will be more

They'll turf out the others make way.

Wonder if the Rwanda plan could be resurrected for these people 🤔

exactly what I was thinking.

Thevelvelletes · 07/08/2024 12:52

It definitely should be in years not months.
The guy that got two months, that was hardly worth the cost of court time and legal aid.

No. Keyboard warrior

Read page 5. A poster put up a link. The 18 year-old from Horwich got 2 months prison and ordered to pay a lot of money - first offence, lives with grandparents.
