What was the fascination with Pierrot in the 80s?

I remember thus being on everything, there was bedding, wallpaper, note books, clothing, bags. Why was it so popular?? Where did it come from? Was there something on TV?

I don’t think there was anything on TV - just lots of products in the shops. My friend had Pierrot everything - duvet cover, curtains, lightshade, stickers, writing paper, music box etc - this was in about 1981.

Sunnysidegold · 06/08/2024 16:53

You just reminded me of my friend's bedroom! I can see the bedstead, the picture on the wall and a wee figurine she had!

HeyTalkToMeGoose · 06/08/2024 16:54

I might have been that friend!!

I had it all

Oh god, if you find out, please tell me. I had the duvet cover, pomander (where are they now??), pyjama case (ditto), curtains, ornaments, nightshirt.. probably more, I can't remember. I think most of it had been carefully selected by me from my mum's catalogue, that huge heavy slab of printed paper that I spent hours poring over and making helpful lists for my poor parents from it.
That pale, mournful, asexual face will most likely haunt me forever.

HeyTalkToMeGoose · 06/08/2024 16:55

What I DO remember is that it was all in my mums 'catalogue'

So she got it all and paid it off weekly like many did back then. Might be why it was so popular

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 06/08/2024 16:56

I think it was a bit of the manufacturers deciding for us what we were going to want to buy. So if everything had Pierrot on it - everything you bought had Pierrot on it. On the grounds presumably that the manufacturers 'know' what we want and will give us that and nothing else.

HeyTalkToMeGoose · 06/08/2024 16:57

The catalogues I remember from them days were.....Marshall ward, Burlington and Littlewoods

Then Avon got involved

And then market stalls caught on too

CheerfulBunny · 06/08/2024 16:58

@HeyTalkToMeGoose We had two - I am sure one was Peter Craig, but I can't remember what the other was.

CheerfulBunny · 06/08/2024 16:59

Aha! Kays. Thank you, Google

Allnewtometoo · 06/08/2024 17:00

Ah this might be why we didn't have any of it. My mum absolutely refused to use catalogues (anything on "credit") Lots of friends had it. We might have had a figurine as a present t from my nan.

There were very limited choices pre Internet 😄

spiderlight · 06/08/2024 17:01

Pierrot was creepy! I remember having a lot of Holly Hobbie stuff - stationery, mostly - but no idea who she was supposed to be or where it came from.

LlamaNoDrama · 06/08/2024 17:01

Where did Anne geodes come from and snatch? The dog? I'd forgotten the clown.

Anne geddes is a photographer then she got into calenders then the creepy babies emerged my Dd loved them and she had a few of the baby dolls.

Bandol · 06/08/2024 17:06

Where did Snatch the dog come from? I've still got both my Snatch duvet cover sets in the cupboard as spares. I remember choosing them from my grandmother's catalogue!

Allnewtometoo · 06/08/2024 17:07

Also, what were the littke ornaments, I'm sure they wee a little boy abd girl elephant? And maybe little grey bears?

MrsLeonFarrell · 06/08/2024 17:08

Now I'm wondering where my Pierrot doll went.

It's fashion, like Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady (I've still got the curtains from my 80s bedroom), or a few years ago everything had owls on it, then llamas and unicorns. I would really like to know who is sitting in a room deciding this stuff though.

Mrsjayy · 06/08/2024 17:09

I had the elephants In fact I think I still have them somewhere. The peridot clown seemed to come from nowhere then every girl had something who needs the Internet for a trend to get round 😂

Allnewtometoo · 06/08/2024 17:10

@Mrsjayy I remember an ornament of the elephants in bed with their trunks entwined!

I’ve still got a Pierrot ashtray from 1983.

AlisonDonut · 06/08/2024 17:12

Marcel Marceau. Influenced Michael Jackson and his moonwalk - he was all over the place...and then so was Pierrot. It was everywhere, including Steve Strange in David Bowie videos. It was definitely a look.

ditalini · 06/08/2024 17:13

Anyone remember the wee furry gorillas? They had grasping feet and hands and were pencil toppers, keyrings etc depending on size.

Also novelty pencils and rubbers in a gazillion shapes and scents.

But the absolute most wanted item from the pierot/sticker/pot pouri/cheap jewelery shop in our town was a lifesize ice cream sundae candle with a cherry on top. I don't think any of my friends ever got one - beyond paper round prices.

EnjoyingTheSilence · 06/08/2024 17:14

Don’t forget the man and baby posters from Athena!

And the tennis woman scratching her arse.
