What was the fascination with Pierrot in the 80s?

I remember thus being on everything, there was bedding, wallpaper, note books, clothing, bags. Why was it so popular?? Where did it come from? Was there something on TV?

The catalogues I remember from them days were.....Marshall ward, Burlington and Littlewoods

Then Avon got involved

And then market stalls caught on too

We had the Janet Frazer catalogue. My friend had loads of Pierrot stuff but I never did. I wanted it though, we fancied ourselves as New Romantics Grin

You have just triggered a long lost memory for me. I had a creepy Pierrot doll and my friend used to hide it under my blankets so it would be the first thing I saw when I went to bed. There was a spate of horror films with China dolls in them, and Pierrot dolls fitted into that category.

Can someone put a photo for context?

Don’t forget the man and baby posters from Athena!

My aunt had a clock of this

Whatineed · 06/08/2024 17:28

My friends bedrooms were dripping in Pierrot - posters, lamp bases, lamp shades, pyjama cases, dolls, duvets and then sheets and valance in dusky pink.

I couldn't stand it. But I was equally tacky, I had a totally 80s bedroom, white walls and furniture with primary coloured plastic strip edgings and red plastic handles , yellow gloss skirting boards, a foldable sponge chair bed in red with white graph design and a duvet set covered in primary coloured triangles that Neil Morrissey had on his bed in "Men Behaving Badly" 🤣🤣🤣

I still have a small heart shape box. I keep my tings in it at night.

spiderlight · 06/08/2024 17:29

@ditalini - the little grasping gorilla things were called Chicaboo. I've still got mine!

Oh 😂

I don’t use it. Don’t smoke anymore but I’ve kept it as it was a present x

Getonwitit · 06/08/2024 17:36

Does anyone remember the Pendelfin Ornaments and the Sarah Moon posters ?

Mammyloveswine · 06/08/2024 17:36

Loved my bedspread! Had some amazing g matching cushions with a real doll on too!

It amused me that the clown was on everything 😀

I remember my friend got married in the early 80s and she and her husband bought their first house immediately, a modem semi for about £21,000 (sigh). She was 21. She kitted out her spare bedroom with Pierrot duvet set, curtains, accessories and everything. I must say it was not a fashion that appealed to me really.

She was very proud of it though, and also her kitchen, which had accessories in different primary colours, all from Habitat. Very modern! Back then Habitat was cheap, more like IKEA is today I suppose.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 06/08/2024 17:54

I am REALLY glad that I was only into ponies back then.

But I did have pony wallpaper, pony duvet covers, etc etc...

RosaMoline · 06/08/2024 17:55

I remember a design called ‘eternal beau’ (I think) that was the must-have for the 80s kitchen/dinnerware. In fact, I still have a slo cooker in the design my mum (RIP) gave me. Works like a dream. Like new! Mum also had everything in Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady. Tins in particular.
Hated the Pierrots!
Also remember these lip glosses in a rollerball (strawberry and mint flavoured) that were an absolute must, Jovan’s perfume ‘musk’ (which apparently made boys go crazy for you)

Iwant20cats · 06/08/2024 17:56

I loved Pierrot I had the doll and the bed set. I loved the mail order catalogues as well. Ooh the excitement when the new one was delivered!!

BestIsWest · 06/08/2024 17:59

All my friends had Eternal Beau dinner services on their Wedding gift lists. I bought about 6 of the teapots for various friends.

Glass clowns were a thing too. Terrifying things.

My DH bought me a vintage Eternal Beau dinner service for my birthday 😀

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 06/08/2024 18:42

Dhs ex had that eternal beau stuff and I binned it. It was pre eBay and I wished I’d kept it and ebayer the lot.

CheerfulBunny · 06/08/2024 18:53

OP, I think the wee boy and girl were called Love Is... and it was from a cartoon strip. Bit before my time but I do remember it. You don't see it about much now as they were, um, naked 😮

Marcel Marceau. Influenced Michael Jackson and his moonwalk - he was all over the place...and then so was Pierrot. It was everywhere, including Steve Strange in David Bowie videos. It was definitely a look.

And don't forget Leo Sayer! The Lindsey Kemp/1930s Biba vibe influenced lots of pop stars.
Yes I had a doll. Yes I was 20. Think dh "lost" it when we moved in together.

Pendelfin was made in my home town, awful when the factory closed.

Sethera · 06/08/2024 19:15

People will wonder the same thing about unicorns in the future.

I didn't have Pierrot things. I had a framed picture of a white peacock surrounded by pink flowers that I thought was the bees knees, and a jewellery box with a twirling ballerina that played Swan Lake.

PerkyMintDeer · 06/08/2024 19:18

I got sent to an 80s fancy dress birthday party as a toddler AS Pierrot as my Mum saw the idea in a woman's magazine.

Black swimming cap.
White pyjamas with black pom poms attached.
A ruff round my neck.
Painted my face white with red lipstick and a sad tear on my face.

I'm Asian...so it was kind of a weird choice...

She was VERY proud though.

I think this is the one I had. Was it from M&S?
