History is all fed to us through prisms and interpretations!

BIWI · 17/08/2024 15:41

I, too, strongly disagree with re-writing/re-editing stuff. I totally understand that some of Agatha Christie's work or Enid Blyton's* work (as examples) might use language that we find offensive these days - but it's important in the context of when they were written, and reflects how people felt and spoke/wrote then.

*Maybe there's an exception to be made in the case of children's books, I suppose <grudging>

Piggywaspushed · 17/08/2024 15:46

It's a spoken word in a film though so that does have a different impact. They'd run into trouble with age rating.

Piggywaspushed · 17/08/2024 15:47

Don't think anyone quibbled over the altered title of Then There Were None at the time!

@SerendipityJane can I just point out that this is the thread you would normally see my name on - I'm not known for preaching from the Telegraph or raving about the wonderful electoral system in the UK. Your responses to my question on the other thread about whether in the US people talk about electoral reform seems pretty aggressive.

Sorry My Bad GIF by chuber channel

Well, I can only apologize. I don't mean to come across as aggressive - that lack of nuance with the printed word. I'll try and catch myself more in future ...

Zonder · 17/08/2024 16:19

No problem @SerendipityJane thanks

Maybe it's like Clacton and he hates it ? Why buy a house there ?

dontcallmelen · 17/08/2024 17:27

Brilliant news Pointy so glad wheelchair has been sorted quickly.
maybe the undoing of Farage will be Tax/fraud like it did for Al Capone, I live in hope that the disgusting rinsing grifter will get his comeuppance.

Must admit I thought that - and then I'd imagined it if he was claiming to stay there 😂

I've been trying to find this out but the only source for this seems to be RS Archer on twitter. I've even asked friends who live there if they know.

Yeah, that turned into a bit of a very small circular search. They kept on repeating "it's in Private Eye", but the issue and page numbers were conspicuous by their absence, otherwise I would have consulted my 40+ year collection.

Holding all sides to the same standard is the only way to put some distance between them. In that vein I am pleased Led By Donkeys have said they will be keeping an eye on Labour as well as the Tories.

Notonthestairs · 17/08/2024 18:31

I imagine Farage owns property all over the place - but I doubt he lives anywhere near Clacton. I think his girlfriend worked for an EU think tank (which illegally funnelled £ to UKIP*) so I'd guess they'd have a base in Europe too.

  • might have been the previous girlfriend, I lack the will to check which one.

Good news about the wheelchair pointy.

Barely a week after the riots and Cleverley is fanning the flames again with his Express article

Barely a week after the riots and Cleverley is fanning the flames again with his Express article

thing is now .... who cares ? With 60% of the public not giving a toss what happens to the Tories, the Express can toss itself off as much as it likes. No one is listening. Same as the Telegraph.

A neurolinguist might be amused at the language though: "Tories demand ...."; "Tories Rage ..."; "Brexiteers (which we all know is code for "Ben Habib") brutal takedown of Labour ...."

It will be a slow process - we have a collective 14 years (basically a generation) to lose the reflex reaction to such fripperies. And if current conditions persist, in 14 years the average age of the Tory supplicant will be 77 years and rising.

On a related note, I really do find myself wondering what unchecked algorithm is punting "Liz Truss slams Harris" into my MS Start feed ? Because it is a spectacular waste of someones money. (As are the incessant FB and YT ads for the same few products that I will never buy. Not the best advert for "AI" driven advertising).

HannibalHeyes · 18/08/2024 11:45

Polling for the next Tory leader, apparently showing them all well below "None of the above"!

A total irrelevance to the country. Except the Express, who want the Tories back (one presumes they are sponsored by St. Jude) and a weird bunch on YouTube who think that signing a petition will somehow make Keir Starmer disappear. The comments I saw were beyond hilarious ... at least 40% of people seem to think that because of this he will be gone by September. I'm starting to wonder if bots are attracting bots. It would serve a lot of these "AI" wankers right.

Also I notice the c-word is bubbling under again. You know the one. Just don't invest.
