Would you like to be tall?

Pebbles16 · 05/08/2024 20:16

I am a very short person (155cm). Watching the women's basketball and at least one of the players is nearly 2m tall - wow!
Got me wondering that I'd like to live the life of a tall person for a weekend (clothing issues aside, both ends of the scale can't quite get clothes to fit).
So, presuming I could have a comfy outfit, I'd love to see life as someone so tall for a little bit (and then probably relish going back to being Mrs Pepperpot again - I get vertigo!)
Any other shorties think this might be fun?
(Or curly girls wanting straight hair; slim wanting to try curvy etc; a brunette hankering after blonde? - I think we all want what we don't have)

I'm 5'6 and am happy being a pretty average height. I'd rather be a bit taller than a bit shorter.

I don't seriously want to be taller (5'2") but it would be nice to...
*Not have to go climbing to do the food shopping.
*Not be arm pit height in a crowd.
*Be able to see and hear things in a crowd.
*Not feel claustrophobic in crowds.
*To be able to wear nice "ankle" socks without folding them in half so they're ugly side out because they're not cut to be at the widest point of my muscular calves.
*To be an adult shoe size- no really, I don't have the sartotial elegance of the average 9yo
*To have people move out of my way for a change, it's knackering having to give way constantly- running behind 6ft DH when he paced me for 10k was mind-blowing... people actually SAW him and moved aside.
*To not have colleagues walk into the room asking where the teacher is because I blend in with y7s.
*To not have people talk over my head and ignore me.
*To be able to drive pretty much any car in a safe and ergonomic position.
*To be able to use those ridiculous accelerators pivoted from the ground without jamming my leg and operating with the subtlest pressure of my toes, or killing my quads by suspending my leg halfway up the pedal to be able to use my ankle.
*To have fitted behind the steering wheel when heavily pregnant
*To be able to wear voluninous blousy dresses without looking like a stubby child playing dress-up.
*To not have to climb on sofas and end up with my feet wraggling off the ends if I don't want to slump really badly.

Plane and old theatre seats are rare examples of beautifully considered ergonomic design!

Tuck too long socks in, don’t fold outside!

You're actually tall compared to me 🤣

I have come realise that my height is part of my identity, so I wouldn't change it but I get your point.

What does bug me though is people saying 'aren't you small?' As if I've never noticed and not had to spent ££££ on hemming every pair of trousers I've ever owned.
Also in my 20s men seemed to think it was ok to pick you up, which I hated!

I have some tall friends and they get exactly the same but tall comments. They also get bored pretty quickly. I suppose the grass is always greener 🤣

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 05/08/2024 22:49

I'm 4'11, and I'd like to be tall for a day, maybe.
But, generally, it doesn't cross my mind.

Cobblersorchard · 05/08/2024 22:50

I’m 5ft 4 and it’s slightly irritating for clothes as I’m too big for petite but too small for regular, 5ft 6 would be perfect for jeans!

But I generally like being 5ft 4. It’s not remarkably short, my DH is 6ft 3 though so we aren’t well matched for height especially when sharing a car but hopefully DD will come put taller than me. She’s on track for 5ft 6 tracking the charts at least.

Newbie8918 · 05/08/2024 22:50

Guavafish1 · 05/08/2024 21:25

I think I would prefer it… people don’t take you serious if yours short.

I work in a professional environment and have never had an issue with being taken seriously! I am very petite.

Elphame · 05/08/2024 20:51

5' 10" but my height is in my legs. I need a 35" inside leg.

I haven't been able to buy a pair of formal trousers for years and skirts etc are always too short. Even more annoying are long boots. I don't have fat legs but I can't do up most pairs as they are designed to curve in above the calf. On me that's almost 2" too soon so it's the widest part of my leg.

As for jump suits - not a hope!

Have you looked at Pretty Little Thing? They give the inside leg on all trousers/jeans, which seems obvious, but loads of places don’t. They do up to a 36” leg on their tall section. Been a lifesaver for me, just beware of their vanity sizing, a recent size 14 is way too big on me and everything else in a 14 from different places fits.

MeowCatPleaseMeowBack · 05/08/2024 23:04

I like my height (5'8") and wouldn't change it if I could. I rarely struggle to reach things and there are no disadvantages. The only time I can think of that a different height would be better is on airplanes.

kitsuneghost · 05/08/2024 23:04

I think in general most people aspire to be shorter rather than taller.
Nowadays petite clothes go as tall as 5.5 which is above average.
The reason is vanity sizing. People are more likely to buy that dress if it says petite on it.

Isn't that the one that was making clothes in a sweatshop in Leicester? I'm not sure I would want to support them.

Do you mean "women" rather than "people"? I think there are very few men who would like to be shorter. And I don't think it's generally true of women either, but perhaps slightly more likely.

Crap, I hope not, not something I’d want to support!

Mumbelle44 · 05/08/2024 23:09

For the tall ladies on here saying they can’t find trousers. I am 5ft 11 with a 36” inside leg. Long tall sally go up to 38”.

To answer your question, I love being this height. I wear heels too! Wouldn’t swap to be any shorter!

SwordToFlamethrower · 05/08/2024 23:13

I'm 5ft 7 1/2" and long on the body. My husband is 6ft tall. Clothing for tall people is just about the legs, never about the body. Drives me bonkers.

I don't consider myself to be tall at all though.

HeySummerWhereAreYou · 05/08/2024 23:14

I am 167cm, (5 ft 5 in,) and happy with this height. Would HATE to be 2 metres - 6 ft 5 in - tall! Shock

DH is 178cm (5 ft 10 in,) and is happy with his height too. I would hate to be with a man who is shorter than me, and if I was much taller, the amount of men taller than me would be reduced dramatically!

Evanna13 · 05/08/2024 23:19

I think 5ft 5 - 5ft 7 is ideal. But I don't really like to stand out.

Isometimeswonder · 05/08/2024 23:21

I'm 5'9 and love being tall. I've never wanted to feel protected by a man or anything like that.
It's great at concerts etc. I can reach things.
I buy long stuff in Next or M&S, it's much easier these days.

HansHolbein · 05/08/2024 23:35

Nope. I’m very happy being 5ft5.

Hangingupnow · 05/08/2024 23:35

I used to get boys claiming that I was 6ft, because they were 5ft 9. They were not 5ft 9...

This is definitely the most annoying thing about being tall! People telling you that you are taller than you are because they are X height.

AWOL66 · 05/08/2024 23:42

I'm 5ft 6 and would love to be a bit taller. I'd say I'm just average but wearing heels I get a lot more positive attention. Same with a tan. You wouldn't think subtle changes would make much difference but they really do. Victoria Beckham wrote about this in her book "That Extra Half an Inch".

treacledan71 · 05/08/2024 23:43

I am 4ft 11. Love to be taller. Was on a ladder at work the other day and same height as my colleague. Weird feeling. Could see over the cabinet. I think I would also look thinner!

I'm 167cm / 5ft6 and I've always hated how tall I am, would love to be shorter

Really?
I think that would be considered on the short side, but it depends how old you are. Youngests are sooooo tall these days!

I'm 30 and the tallest out of all my siblings

Aargh, me too… exact same height and body type. Always finding the waists and busts too high in clothes! At least I fit into normal trousers, though.

My oldest DD is 5’10” and super skinny, so looks even taller. She travelled round China alone (with pink hair!) and was stared at all the time. People took photos of her constantly. She loves being tall though.
