Cancel holiday to Cornwall due to riots?!

I've name changed for this as I feel quite silly even asking this! We're meant to be in Cornwall from this weekend for 7 nights and DH is saying we'll have to wait and see what happens with all the riots. For context, we're brown, but not Muslim (I say this because I know Muslims are being sadly targeted :( )

At first I thought DH is overly cautious (which he tends to be) and needs a reality check, but having said that, for the first time in almost 18 years I've felt a bit unsafe in the UK, so maybe I'm the one who needs a reality check.

While most of the news has focused on the riots in the north, I wanted to check with those in South (especially Cornwall) if you've seen any issues? Would it be safe to travel? My parents will also be joining us, but they will be travelling by train from Paddington. I'm hoping the train journey is safe. My parents don't live in the UK and are just visiting over the summer, so they do sometimes stand out more than me, DH and the kids.

TIA!

We're putting our plans on halt for Lake district next week, I wouldn't risk it.

DizzyBumble · 05/08/2024 13:11

I really would have thought places like Cornwall & the Lake District would be absolutely fine, it's main city's I would avoid

TrumpetOfTheMatriarchy · 05/08/2024 13:11

Don't be so daft. The only riots you'll encounter in Cornwall is over parking and second homes.

or the great jam or cream on first debate?

Velvian · 05/08/2024 13:12

I'm so sorry to hear you are having to consider this. I can't believe it is happening. I think you will be fine in Cornwall. Whereabouts are you staying? I know the the Padstow area well and I can't imagine any riots happening in that area.

ShouldICancel · 05/08/2024 13:13

@DizzyBumble that's what I thought (fingers crossed)

@cantwait4orsummer I hope we can both keep to our plans

As a white woman I understand my opinions aren’t too relevant to your situation BUT I know Cornwall tends to be more full of poshos in August, those with 2nd homes, more guardian readers than hateful reform voters. Also, I’m so sorry this is happening and sending you and your family lots of love.

GinAndGooseberries · 05/08/2024 13:14

So sorry you are even having to think about this. I'm in Scotland so no help but didn't want to ignore.

Theredjellybean · 05/08/2024 13:14

I'm sorry you have even had these thoughts but honestly the far right extremists are not going to be rioting in genteel cornwall or I imagine some bucolic holiday cottages in the lake district.

thursdaymurderclub · 05/08/2024 13:14

if you are travelling by public transport then you may need to check to see if services are running.

but im fairly sure cornwall and the lake district are gonna be ok demonstration and riot wise.

most of the demonstrations are aimed at refugee housing. yesterday the one in doncaster started as a peaceful protest outside a refugee hotel supporting the refugees, but then the thugs turned up and began attacking the protesters.

MellersSmellers · 05/08/2024 13:15

Well that's so sad you think that.
I'm not in the SW, but these events are (and historically have been) confines to cities where there are significant immigrant communities and widespread social issues. I think you're safe in both Cornwall and the Lake District.

ShouldICancel · 05/08/2024 13:15

Thanks for the support! It feels so odd to be worried about this... I've never ever felt out of place in the UK. In fact, I would even say I'm more comfortable here than in my home country!

@Velvian we're going to St. Ives

This is bonkers OP. You are at more risk of getting struck by lightening than getting caught up in the Great Cornish Race Riots of 2024

Cantsleepdontsleep · 05/08/2024 13:15

Absolutely no reason to cancel at all, enjoy your holiday!

MidnightPatrol · 05/08/2024 13:15

I’m sorry the riots have left you feeling unsafe.

I really don’t think you’re likely to see anything of this sort in a Cornish holiday town however.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 05/08/2024 13:15

I am appalled and disgusted that you are having to consider this.

I think you should be fine in Cornwall, but I live at the other side of the country so can't say for sure. Hopefully someone from there will be able to reassure you.

I really hope you are able to relax on your holiday

BobnLen · 05/08/2024 13:16

I can't see that a load of rioters are going to Cornwall, they would have to travel miles down the A30 to get there.

BeeCucumber · 05/08/2024 13:18

No riots in Cornwall - only rows over seagulls stealing pasties in St Ives. Enjoy your holiday - and bring waterproof clothing!

ShouldICancel · 05/08/2024 13:18

@SunOnTheRiver that made me laugh!! Thanks... I needed that

Saddened to read that you feel like this. Have a lovely time in St Ives and around there.

BobnLen · 05/08/2024 13:18

Places more likely in the SW are probably Exeter and Torquay

There weren't any riots in Doncaster.
The lake District will be absolutely fine it's far enough from any major city.

SunOnTheRiver · 05/08/2024 13:18

Exactly, they aren’t complete masocists

Cornishskies · 05/08/2024 13:19

Kernow resident, except for watching the news would have absolutely no idea there have been any riots or troubles, honestly I’d be shocked if you weren’t completely safe here.

RVEllacott · 05/08/2024 13:20

I live in the Lake District. It's very busy here at the moment as it usually is at this time of year. I live in one of the busiest honeypot locations and there are people here from all over the place and many different backgrounds and ethnicities on holiday (and working in hospitality) and there's been no sign of unrest.

What's happening in some of the big towns and cities feels like a million miles away. I can't speak for Cornwall but I'd be surprised if it was different.
