I’m already fed up of Starmer as PM

Semi- lighthearted, I know it’s early days, but I’m not convinced of Starmer as an effective leader
He reads from his notes even when giving a short speech; if he really believed in what he is saying, why the need?
He doesn’t seem to have the leadership X factor and doesn’t seem to have a grip on the ongoing riots
Bright new start for UK? Doesn’t feel like it

He’s attacked pensioners, albeit they don’t all need the heating allowance but means-testing it would cost as much

It is not going to be means tested, you'll be pleased to know. It will be given automatically to everyone on PC (and possibly HB,?).

I don't actually agree with it being withdrawn, but this is the easiest and most efficient way to target it.

newtomoney · 04/08/2024 19:44

So you honestly think that the bunch of charlatans and grifters who have been in power for decades are the better option ???

I will go with this lot of actual adult humans any day of the week...

All the available evidence says that would be the case.

Eh ? Are you suggesting Rishi has asked his supporters to riot? It really is nuts on MN atm!

'Tis clear she means old cigarette breath.

noblegiraffe · 04/08/2024 19:45

I see the rioters are attacking hotels which are housing asylum seekers.

I wonder which government had a deliberate policy of not processing asylum claims and keeping them in limbo in hotels for years at taxpayers' expense?

Northernnature · 04/08/2024 19:30

I assure you @Leniriefenstahl that things can get much worse. There are loads of countries worse than UK in the world. Yes it is a prediction but I've seen nothing to reassure me. The rest of your post just agrees with what I said so not sure what your point is. Yes I live in the North but in the South up to a year ago what's that got to do with anything?

So you spent most of the Tory years in the south ? Forgive me but a year in the North doesn’t make you a political pundit worth listening to.

Sorry, this is what I meant - WFA will no longer be universal. I'm fine with that. When I do finally get to pensionable age, I won't be eligible for it either. And that's OK. The point I made stands - the Tories nursed the pensioner vote and attacked the working poor, the disabled and the young. Now the pain is going to be shared. Fairness.

I strongly defend the right to peaceful protest. Everyone has this right.

Not riots, not violence. And let's not ignore that is led with a racist agenda.

It isn't any means necessary to get what you want. That also goes for people arriving in boats illegally. But you don't solve these issues with violence.

Leniriefenstahl · 04/08/2024 19:49

Why are people so incensed about the cut to the fuel allowance but were quite happy to see huge cuts to public services year after year until they are essentially non functioning ? No complaints from Tory supporters about those cuts…..

Northernnature · 04/08/2024 19:49

Eh ? Do you mean farage? Haven't seen him talking his supporters too riot but I'm sure you have a link @IClaudine Getting back to starmer I see his approval reading has plummeted 16 points to 3% in the last two weeks so he's definitely not very popular apart from with a few mumsnetters.

Funnily enough, on another thread about JSO being jailed, I said “suppose a ‘stop the boats’ movement climbed the gantries, would their cause be worthy?” And here we have a far right “movement” causing mayhem; which will in turn breed copycat mayhem, as the 2011 riots did, unless it’s dealt with quickly.

Northernnature · 04/08/2024 19:54

Because @Leniriefenstahl he will do alot of damage to the uk. It is natural to want your political opponents to fall if you think they will cause major damage (I'm sure you felt the same way about the tories and that's before you get to all the people that wanted Brexit to fail).

@Northernnature

"It's impossible to view the postings of Farage, without utter revulsion.

He masquerades as a " reasoned commentator" on what he claims to be a national crisis linked to immigrants while claiming he deplores any lawlessness. Then he hints at more lawlessness if his warnings are not heeded.

The reality is that his entire political future is dependent on fomenting confrontation and division. It is by creating a climate of crisis that he has got where he has."

I think his speech the other day was inflammatory, and has not helped at all

Ironically these are the people labour is supposed to be the voice of, the under dog, the disadvantaged, the poor.

Who represents them?

I feel so sorry for the police right now and where is the army.

Labour is not the voice of racists, and these people do not represent the working class. Not. At. All.

Yes, his speech on right wing thuggery as protests/ riots and fighting isn't just right wing.

The divide is horrendous and he certainly isn't going to help situations by pointing the finger one way. Everyone involved in disorder needs to be reprimanded.

Agreed. All protesters who either become violent or damage property should be severely dealt with but the police turn a blind eye to some. This is bound to cause division and unrest.

Here's the video of Farage telling his supporters that law and order has broken down and that there are reports that the Southport murderer was on an MI6 watchlist (referencing the discredited disinformation that it was an asylum seeker fresh off a small boat) and suggesting that the 'truth' is being withheld from the public.

If you don't see how that is whipping up anti-government distrust and anger in an already volatile situation, then I can't help you.

Absolutely.

They kept the, here unprocessed as a scapegoat for their incompetence. Blame the asylum seekers - who want to work and pay tax. Who want a better life and decent education.

Now it's blame Starmer.

It's like the kids in secondary school who can blame everyone including the dog for their lack of homework!

We don't need sparkle we need policies and actions.
Junior Doctors strike settled in 3 weeks. Public bodies listened too. Stuff like that.

And money taken from pensioners to pay public servants pay increases almost threbble inflation.

CassieMaddox · 04/08/2024 19:57

2dogsandabudgie · 04/08/2024 19:28

The WFA isn't means tested. How many more times does this need to be said. There are millions of pensioners who are just over the threshold to receive pension credit and qualify for the WFA. The cut off for pension credit is £218 a week. Those pensioners who receive the full state pension of £220 a week won't get any help.

This is why people are saying this is unfair. Millions of pensioners this winter will suffer. How can anyone say they agree with this.

Oh come on. The child benefit cap is the same, most people accepted it. Pensioners can take their turn.

midgetastic · 04/08/2024 19:59

Threbble inflation ? What - is it now 30% - we all missed that
