I’m already fed up of Starmer as PM

Semi- lighthearted, I know it’s early days, but I’m not convinced of Starmer as an effective leader
He reads from his notes even when giving a short speech; if he really believed in what he is saying, why the need?
He doesn’t seem to have the leadership X factor and doesn’t seem to have a grip on the ongoing riots
Bright new start for UK? Doesn’t feel like it

I'm watching bits of this play out from a holiday abroad and I cannot believe people are saying Starmer should be saying he understands people's concerns blah blah. These look like violent thugs looking for an excuse for a brawl and to steal in the ensuing mayhem. The pictures of the burnt out library for example are heartbreaking, though they've apparently already received thousands in donations to rebuild, or start to. What an insult to 'ordinary people' to say they'd support this behaviour. I would be livid if Starmer was appeasing these people. I doubt very much that many of them are listening to what he says anyway. They're just waiting for the next instruction/trigger from their social media outlets and the people orchestrating that also don't care what Starmer says - they've just used those horrendous murders last week as an excuse to unleash all this shit.

I think he's doing a good job and making it clear that this is criminal behaviour that is in no way justifiable. The solutions in the long term are going to be complex and we won't know how successful Labour will be at implementing them for years to come. Bringing immigration down will do fuck all to change these people's lives though and it certainly won't change the aims of those in control, like Farage etc. Just like Brexit didn't shut him up, there'll always be another target/focus point for the bile he spews.

So stricter controls on social media and incitement alongside education/investment so that fewer people are susceptible to it. Certainly not quick fixes that can be sorted in a few weeks. I think Starmer and his team will make progress though and will have the right approach- so far the signs have been good.

I do wonder if stricter laws around online hate speech will be introduced, and some responsibility put on the companies that run the platforms.

It’s to be hoped so. Your summary is spot on @stripycats.

It’s nonsense unless Starmer acts in a consistent manner with all miscreants. The evidence so far suggests that is unlikely which will just fuel the fire more.

He was very naive to take sides. It will ultimately be his downfall.

I agree I to am shocked that the PM would come down on the side of law abiding citizens who abhor violence on the streets.

What evidence would this be, from the last 4 weeks?
it’s ok to side against racist fascists, by the way. There aren’t good people on that side. Though I agree anyone indulging in violent disorder should feel the consequences.

I am happy that I can reassure you that all miscreants will be dealt with in a consistent manner. This is what Jess Phillips said last night about the violence in Birmingham:

"The police have attended all sites of violence tonight and all those perpetrating it will face the consequences no matter who they are. Thanks to all residents who have acted with grace and kindness and have kept people informed so actions could be taken"

Jess Phillips did everything she could to down play the violence last night. Had the roles been reversed I think we all know the rhetoric would have been very different.

There needs to be a balanced approach to all sides otherwise this won’t end well.

The quotation from her in the post you responded to undermines your point. She says there was violence. She says it will be dealt with.

Indeed. It’s almost as if people wilfully misinterpret what politicians they don’t like say.

CurlewKate · 06/08/2024 09:27

@Charlie2121 How has Jess played down the violence?

She didn't. She said:

"anyone committing criminality should face the law, but it's important that the facts of why people are congregating. And how it is done on purpose in order to keep driving this dissent, to create content. It's very organised and very ugly"

Now admittedly that was a garbled tweet, but it is obvious she was saying that Muslim people were gathering, rightly or wrongly, because of rumours that the EDL were going to turn up. She nowhere excuses the violence that broke out.

But Lee Anderson and co. are running with the narrative that she was excusing it and playing it down, two tier policing etc. Which is really going to help things.

IClaudine · 06/08/2024 09:31

I don't even bloody like Jess Phillips, but she is not scared of calling out violent men, whoever they are. Don't you remember election night, Charlie?

The quote is very selective. She said a lot more than that which is what has outraged may other politicians and members of the public.

She justified the mobs forming and then downplayed the whole evening’s incidents including some people being seriously assaulted by masked gangs of thugs outside a pub and people having their cars vandalised based on the colour of their skin.

The MSM has clearly been given instructions not to highlight the incidents as it doesn’t play into Starmer’s divisive politics.

Have a look at some of the videos on X and tell me why they are not one of the lead news items. I thought we were trying to stamp out racist violence.

If your response to masked gangs of racists attacking lone individuals quietly having a pint after work and beating them senseless is to say “the pub has been visited by lots of lovely community sending solidarity and are locking up for the night as is usual” then your sole aim is to sweep matters under the carpet.

I think she was probably referring to the fact that Muslim elders visited the pub in question to apologise to the staff for Muslim youths attacking a customer who they thought was a far-right rioter.

PS. There is footage of the apology on Twitter.

It’s OK to seriously assault people provided someone comes along later and says sorry then?

If some of the masked gang are remanded in custody later today then I’ll stand corrected.

The working classes sick of illegal immigrants getting 4 star hotels and brand new houses that they themselves could never afford”

Do some people honestly still believe this froth? If they are in hotels it’s because they are asylum seekers awaiting a decision on their application, ie not illegal immigrants.
Not sure Holiday Inn Express falls into the 4* category?
As for brand new houses, that’s made up nonsense. The majority are in private rented accommodation, often substandard, as are millions of white, working class people.

Some people are really^^ struggling with losing 😭

"Some" people always do.

Like just after Brexit, all the Remoaners were clearly struggling with losing.

Like after the previous couple of elections, Labour voters were clearly struggling with losing.

It's always the same, as to be expected really, people who don't get what they want are going to kick back in some way.

Have any of you ever had a rodent infestation? You need to be careful to not leave so much as a crumb lying around to feed them. Without something to feed on they wither away or go elsewhere.
