I’m already fed up of Starmer as PM

Semi- lighthearted, I know it’s early days, but I’m not convinced of Starmer as an effective leader
He reads from his notes even when giving a short speech; if he really believed in what he is saying, why the need?
He doesn’t seem to have the leadership X factor and doesn’t seem to have a grip on the ongoing riots
Bright new start for UK? Doesn’t feel like it

No, the WFP is not the same thing as a Cold Weather Payment, if such a thing still exists.

Violent disorder and lawbreaking shouldn't be rewarded with any kind of sympathy.

Absolutely agreed 100%. But we see it happening with other protests over the past 4 years ie BLM, pro-Palestine, Leeds, the woke toppling statues. No wonder the far right thought they could get away with it.

You break the law you should be punished.

They were. There were arrests at all those. And I’m pretty sure none involved attempted murder of whole hotels of people…

😂no
I don't have Emma Stone's either. Or Alicia Keyes. All things I love. 😂

I'm a bit old for it to be honest. Just use socially conventional language to express my appreciation

Nice to see a sense of humour on here!

But that's what happens when you're in power, people criticise you. Blimey, the conservatives put up with it for the last 14 years. Why should it be any different for Labour?

The conservatives were lying, cheating, law breaking disgraces to their office, for at least the last 5 years. Cameron sacrificed the country to try to deal with a revolt in his own party then when it backfired, walked away. Of course they were criticised. I’ll criticise Labour if they do anything like that.

noblegiraffe · 05/08/2024 14:28

The working classes sick of illegal immigrants getting 4 star hotels and brand new houses that they themselves could never afford

Why is this being posted as evidence that Labour hate the working classes when it was the Tory party who put the immigrants in hotels and stopped processing them so they had to stay there?

Labour at least have said that they'll process them, which should free-up some hotel space.

cardibach · 05/08/2024 14:39

Quite @noblegiraffe And anyone who thinks the hotels would still have a 4* rating the way they are used for asylum seekers is a bit dim. Plus the house thing is crap too.

NewGirlinClass · 05/08/2024 15:03

And that will be an amnesty for illegals

"And that will be an amnesty for illegals"

Can you provide a link to this ?
Thanks @NewGirlinClass

NewGirlinClass · 05/08/2024 15:08

Face value. Do you think they will reject many?
Nah nor do I.

dottiehens · 05/08/2024 15:09

urbanbuddha · 05/08/2024 02:38

So what?

9,708,716 people voted Labour
6,828,925 people voted Conservative

So Labour won.
(If we add the total of Lib Dem and Green votes to the Labour vote that easily outnumbers the Con/Reform vote.)

The people voted strategically to get ride of the Tories. However, the turned up was very low. Labour should not be so smug about this tbh.

Speculation.

But they’re in the country in hotels at taxpayer expense and not allowed to work so sending some back, getting the rest out of hotels and allowing them to contribute to the economy is better than the status quo?

Thought not.

BTW that is not an amnesty - that is processing asylum applicants in accordance with our laws and regulations.

Not remotely smug. Yes, people did vote strategically to get rid of the Tories, knowing full well they were indirectly voting for a Labour government. There were lots of seats where voting Libdem was the route to a Labour government, that’s what tactical voting is all about. Turnout was low, I bet my house lots of Tory voters stayed at home because they couldn’t face voting for more chaos. Regardless, a Labour government is what we’ve got for the next five years.

I want to understand if they were not been processed? Because they did not have a way to corroborate the origins of people without passports? I certainly do not want a rubber stamped system rather than checking people properly. Why would they stopped processing people and the hotel bill was so expensive?

If only Labour voters would respect when the conservatives or governments they do not like here or in other countries are voted in. It is laughable really.

Notonthestairs · 05/08/2024 15:22

The Conservative government stopped processing applicants after the Illegal Migration Bill - so they've just detained them indefinitely at our cost. Rwanda obviously wasn't going to be the answer because they were only taking 200. They were warned that this would be the upshot. We've ended up with 100,000 detainees. Neat policy.

Notonthestairs · 05/08/2024 15:23

personally I have had 14 years of Consevative government and havent set fire to a single building or threatened anyone.

I was only pointing out the lack of smugness. I didn’t mention respect.

AubergineMini · 05/08/2024 15:31

I'm utterly fed up of these discussions. There will be no consensus. People take up their position and that's it, there is no movement. The country is ungovernable at present; Labours attempt to people please amounts to pleasing no one at all, just as the Tories ineptitude helped create the division. May as well partition the country at this point into self governing states, pick the part that best suits you and go live there.

midgetastic · 05/08/2024 15:34

Ffs give labour a chance to show through actions not words that they can make the country a better place

I think his speech the other day was inflammatory, and has not helped at all

Ironically these are the people labour is supposed to be the voice of, the under dog, the disadvantaged, the poor.

Who represents them?

I feel so sorry for the police right now and where is the army.

This - The political elite are so
out of touch with the British working classes. Neither here nor there which party;
They will fuck up this Country even more.

At the risk of repeating myself the tax payer are not paying to put up illegal migrants in hotels, since illegal migrants have no recourse to public money.

So if an illegal migrant is staying in a hotel, which I suppose they may be, they will be paying for it themselves and contributing to the UK economy.

midgetastic · 05/08/2024 15:40

What did he say in this speech that is of particular concern as I seem to have missed it
